Did you stop the SQL services or cross your fingers and let P2V do it's thing?

Hi all, Long story short, the physical SIMs server is being retired and there are talks of going hosted Sims. We're not quite there yet. We have a hyper-V setup and SIMs server is the only physical left. I thought of using Microsoft P2V and having to stop the relevant services (SQL etc), but we use Veeam and i had an idea. It goes like this; •Power off physical SIMs server after it's friday back up. (maybe next week lol) •Export the backup to VHDX using Veeam's "restore to VHDX" feature. •Create a New VM same name same IP and attach the exported VHDX. •Power on the "New" virtual Sims server. Am I mad? Have you guys ever done this? Any input would be really grateful. I'm thinking that i could just power up the physical if it goes up the creek! Cheers all. OMG! it worked!...... thank you soooooooo much...... i've fallen foul of Microsoft's very generalised gpo naming.... indeed, if i read the actual gpo description it makes total sense! "If you disable this setting, Computer is displayed as usual, appearing as normal on the desktop, Start menu, folder tree pane, and Web views, unless restricted by another setting." Seems that Microsoft needs to do an audit for the gpos naming and descriptions for windows 10! Thank you so so so. much i've been stuck on this for weeks and weeks! Edit: in light of this..... i'll remove the unnecessary gpos i have though the policy now.

No joy with this also i'm afraid Removing Run from the start menu doesn't allow the drives to be displayed in "this pc" still Another observation (after allowing run on start bar) i can type drive letters into file explorer and access the users n: (there home drive for example). and other mapped drives. so i can actually access the drives, just not see them in "This PC"! However this isn't the correct and prefered behaviour for us as our windows 7 machines (although you can see the mapped drives) dont allow users to type drive letters and unc paths. thanks for all the pointers so far guys.

If i disable the user gpo (as per the attached word doc above) i get the below, so i guess its defo user gpo based!

Interestingly i get this error if i type or manually select "this pc" from the drop down...... it's almost a clue!

No joy i'm afraid With regards to the registry settings, if i disable the whole GPO it reverts as expected. luckily i'm testing in a vm so i have snapshots. I have also recreated a new vm very recently as i was starting to think i had registry corruptions. The behaviour is the same however. The issue/s lie with the word file i posted above...... so i guess i'm gonna have to go through them one at a time! I'll give that a go a get back to you.

I hide locals disks so not seeing the c: is expected. I've managed to identify the problematic user GPO, if i remove it, it all works fine (without the restrictions needed in place of course). The irony is i named this GPO "Win10 Global Disabled Microsoft features & GUI Restrictions" The problem lies somewhere in the user section of the above gpo. i've attached the users section settings in the doc below. (Not sure if there is a better way to attach this? User Configuration.docx

Thought i'd make a new thread as it seems to be a different issue im having with regards to this. Here is my post about pinning the file explorer icon to the ltsb start bar. (and ultimately being blank which leads us here). I have a couple of registry settings that sets file explorer to open in "this pc" instead of "quick access" as default. For testing i have removed these and the problem still exists. The nav bar reappears (with quick access) but "this pc" remains blank with no drives mapped. We are using DFS shares \\domain\sharedfolder to map to drive letters. here's a screenshot of the issue: Anybody got an ideas?

Managed to get this working by creating a .xml file on a network share and deploying with GPO. XML below; xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout" xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout" Version="1"> However i now have an issue where the fire explorer is totally blank! lol i already hate windows 10!

woah i bet that is fun! Can not delegate a custom admin permission to you? or get them to do the leg work and ask them to deploy it to your user OU? Sorry i can't be of more of a help

We got tired of having to maintain the year groups and having to think about scripting. We also use the year of intake with the matching Security Group

We deploy ours via the Google admin panel in chrome apps.

Still not managed this..... it's a deal breaker, user aren't able to access my computer or file explorer at all. Have other people got this to work on LTSB?

Non mandatory local profiles, all controlled via GPOs. I've made a change to a GPO which has removed the File explorer from the taskbar..... i'm 100% sure it's a GPO causing the issue but i can't find which one it is to save my life! I've even formatted and reinstalled win10 to rule out a damaged reg settings. I have redirected startmenus but have no custom tile/taskbar .xml I'm 99.8% where i need to be..... arrrggghhhh had this issue on 1709 also, but was having issues with other things....... have now gone to 1607 ltsb which has fixed loads..... but this issue still exists. any ideas? cheers

Update: Reverting to the previous versions of SearchOCR. admx & SearchOCR. adml fixes the issue. (I backed up the policies folder in sysvol before hand). Waiting for official word from Microsoft

I'm getting the following error after updating the templates to my sysvol: "Resource '$(string.Win7Only)' referenced in attribute displayName could not be found.
