So, basically you have to keep paying them in order to receive updates (which you require for census) and then support and patches, which will fix(?) the errors they create in the updates (which you are also paying for) in the poor software they created... sounds like a plan!

I wonder if they will include gratuitous tea-bagging...?

Unfortunately I'm not sure this will work for us as they do actually take the laptops home, to training sessions at the LEA and to other schools. Limiting or only allowing certain SSIDs isn't going to be an option, unless I can apply the GPO or some other network restriction at school and reliably remove it when off-site.

I've chilled out about it a little more nowadays... I used to make sure I went in after the aircon engineer had been in to service it and knocked it down a couple of degrees (he set it at 21 degrees)... Anyway, I recently undertook the task of relocating our servers from their dedicated server room (glorified cupboard but with AC) into the switch/comms/plant room. There were a few advantages apart from being able to plug directly in to the core switch and teaming the NICs (oh, and giving the school another cupboard to fill with archive/junk): Turn off the AC in the old server room - less money on servicing and saving electricity (I mean saving the planet)... The AC in the new room is a proper industrial unit and was put in by the council and they pay to service it. But as for the OP, the AC is set to 21 degrees, the servers being towers have a digital display on the front and both report similar temperatures (however I just checked the comms cab and the WLC reports 38 degrees so I'm going to take the front off the cab for a bit).

When you say 'ran repairs' what does that entail? I wonder if this is a VEEAM issue, a general SQL issue or just your set-up? Would be interesting to know for those of us with 2012R2 servers and big SQL databases like SIMS, who haven't taken the plunge with the November Update yet...

As sure as I can be that video drivers aren't updating (clients on WSUS for updates 'no drivers' - also laptops are so old I don't think anyone has actually updated any drivers for these in years - also various makes/models). As mentioned I'm presuming screens are duplicated as most don't use extend. From my research so far it seems depending on the PowerPoint presentation there could be issues with it extending by default...? Also, there may be an issue with 'Presenter View'... I did notice the one brought to me was in this view mode (and when I open the presentation that is the default).

I know... ridiculous title for a thread (almost as ridiculous as trying to search using it in Google and finding any meaningful results), but hey-ho, here we go... Office 2016 Windows 10 LTSC Sophos VGA to projector (duplicated screen as most don't even know how to extend). Various laptops but mostly Intel GFX I am starting to get more and more reports of PowerPoint crashing (just had a laptop brought to me that required a hard reset). Nothing has really changed in terms of the network or OS (apart from updates of course), or anti-virus (Sophos for a couple of years). Haven't had a chance to investigate it thoroughly as obviously half of the teachers just reboot or do something else and the other half don't even bother reporting it. Just wondered if anyone has noticed any kind of uptick in this sort of thing happening recently (noticed a few Office updates in the last couple of months)?

Looking through the connection log of a couple of teacher's laptops I noticed some SSIDs that caused me a little concern such as: AndroidAP Rebecca?s iPhone I know that they can connect to any network they want outside of school, I am only concerned that if connected whilst at school it obviously bypasses filtering. I have used GPO to disable the 'Hotspot' option but if I have read correctly this only stops other devices using the laptops connection and not the other way round. Now, before before this thread is inundated with posts about AUPs and 'this is a management issue', I would like to say that I am just asking if anyone knows a technical solution and the rest I can deal with thanks...

Yesterday M$ support supplied me with an ADMX installer for the local machine that disables/reverts the change made in the October update that broke printing for us. The ADMX installer literally sets the following registry key and printing for us once again functions. M$ also informed me that a fix is coming in December, possibly sooner but don't hold your breath. I thought if this solution worked for me maybe others would be willing to try the reg setting. This setting is for versions 2004, 20H2, 21H1 and 21H2. M$ also provided the installers for 1809, 1909 and server 2019, but I did not install those to export the regkey changes. Disclaimer: There are no (intentional) food based puns in the following post... seriously, stop looking for one. We had something similar when I worked in logistics. New firm came in and decided we were going all 21st century with a WMS (previously stock was ordered/picked/packed/checked/delivered with pen and paper - god how I miss those days). We got scanner guns, a new network infrastructure and a big back end system... took ages to implement and cost mega bucks to change everything in the warehouse. It all ground to a halt on the first day, it was absolute chaos and everybody got sent home after standing round for hours doing nothing... there were issues that never really got sorted and the whole thing made my life a misery!

As our trolleys are quite large and on various floors they don't get moved, children from other classes have to get the devices out and take them back to their class (which gives me nightmares) luckily the LockNCharge trolleys have baskets that carry 5 devices each (but we are talking iPads here not Chromebooks). In fact they are chained to the wall for security (not sure anyone would actually be able to get them down/up the stairs and out of the building), but it also stops them being pulled out and hurting a child or damaging the electrical cord/plug. It may be worth checking the supplier again (or at least their webpage listing for the item) the one I linked definitely states cables included, but I can't seem to find many others that say the same.

That is the opposite of what was suggested though, just so you are clear... If you tick render on the device/computer the client does the work. If you untick it, the server has to do the work. If it is more recent (with a rough starting date) what else happened then? Is it directly connected in the time line from moving to the new print server or was it OK for a while and then started? What sort of connection does the server have, how many printers is it dealing with, what sort of print volumes are we talking, is it all applications (Word and Adobe Acrobat can be a bit picky - try something a little dumber like paint as the test page seemed to be quick)? Check 'print directly' on the 'Advanced' tab (I think this is what determines if spooling happens on the server). The only other advice is to try and check your whole network for references to the old print server, especially if it crashed and wasn't removed gracefully (sorry I can't be more specific - but GPOs and things like that, or that all the old printers were removed/deleted from the clients) the only time I had printing hang (apart from recent developments) was years and years ago (so I can't remember exactly) but when old printers or shared drives stick around in things like Office applications and they hang for ages while checking the whole network for those old resources before they move on. It shouldn't matter as I'm sure they are selecting the correct printer on the correct server (I presume \\OLD_SERVER\PRINTER 1 is now \\NEW_PRINTER\PRINTER 1), but if the old printers were not removed it may just take some time when you go to print and the application scans for all the old printers first = hang.

Yeah, we had some old no-name Chinese Android tablets that fell out of support from the manufacturer within a year of purchase (admittedly not my fault as they were purchased by our BM without any consultation). Seems like the version of Android was unable to be updated on the chipset they used or some rubbish and the whole thing was locked into their updates (because the Android OS is coded by them to do that(?)). I mean I probably could have done something like a ROOT hack (if I even knew how) but why would I, that goes against everything we try to do in terms of security for devices doesn't it?

Nothing in there that suggests a fix for my problem... but have they even acknowledged this is actually a problem? I've got to admit though results seem to be very fragmented even within the IT community. There are whole threads devoted to 'WAAAAAAH!!!! I CAN'T PRINT' interspersed with posts from people saying they are 'all patched up to date and printing is fine'... I don't even know what the actual problem is! All I know is that as soon as I put October CU on a client it stops printing (none of the previous workarounds... work)... Back when this started it was universal pretty much, you installed August CU and it killed printing for everyone on the planet. Now it seems that obviously with the endless permutations of people's set-ups it's difficult to compare and contrast (server and client OS, printer makes/models/drivers, various workarounds and fixes), the waters are getting a little muddy and not everyone seems to have the same problems. Some can't install printers, some can... some can't print, some can... Is it a server setting (August/September) or a problem with something on the client (October), is it something MS switched on in an update that you don't know about and haven't added a registry key for to allow it to communicate, is it extra security (NTLM vs. Kerberos), is it specific firewall ports (RPC)...???

Yes, even charities have standards (and rightly so I guess these days)! A bit like the fact that you can't give them used furniture unless it has all the proper fire labels still attached. I remember years ago (and you can probably guess how long) when there was a 'computers for Africa' or something charity and they wouldn't accept anything less than a Pentium 4...

In my opinion even at £1 each that at least means it would be £60 and not £0... I know it isn't massive in terms of an IT dept. budget, but any money coming back in to the school has got to be a good thing. Even if it buys a few packs of biscuits for the staff room...
