Thanks, yes, I will... had an problem with downloading the app due to a token issue... EDIT: I've fixed the issue with the VPP token now (but haven't worked out the reason it happened). So I should be able to get the app pushed out now! Also need to test if this is an actual issue with QR codes though, anyone else having any problems?

A teacher has contacted me regarding using a QR code to access an online resource called Padlet. Previously they have used a QR code to access a webpage where they can view and work on resources . Last week some iPads stopped connecting to the Padlet website and this week most of them won't. The ones that do display the documents the Safari address bar shows the resource name, those that don't connect just show a blank page and the URL in the address bar. The only thing we can determine is that the ones that do connect are on iOS 16.3.1 and the ones that don't have updated to 16.4.1 Anyone know of something that has changed in the update that might produce this behaviour? Also is anyone else that uses Padlet at their school and a QR with iPads on 16.4.1 able to test?

Interesting... that's the second time I've seen Type 4 drivers recommended recently. Have they suddenly become useable? Last I heard they were very basic and you couldn't use advanced settings like fold/staple/booklet etc. So I've steered clear for now as that would get me lynched around here!

It has also started to crash the Print Management MMC whilst looking at the printer properties since installing these drivers....

I'm going to leave the rant for another day, but at lunchtime I walked down the corridor to find a couple of guys from our print provider with a brand new Kyocera MFD... I didn't know this was happening, but I'll just leave that there for now as it was a straight (ish) swap, just the next model up and they cloned all the settings, I didn't even need to change the driver. They also mentioned changing and removing a couple of others, so although I was out for the afternoon I thought I should go back to get a heads up on any carnage I was going to walk into tomorrow... Anyway it turns out they've swapped all the old Kyocera Ecosys printers in the ICT suites for Lexmark C4342, but I didn't think it would cause any issues so I went about swapping the drivers on the print server before I went home. Haven't had to do this for a few years and I had to download the drivers (as they didn't leave a disk), but couldn't install due to restrictions on the server, however managed to extract them with 7Zip from the .exe, then when trying to add them from the .inf nothing appeared. I found another file that instead of installing extracted a different set of files, managed to add the drivers and chose them in the printer settings. However every time after that when I opened the properties a message came up about installing a certificate...? Then I found out that obviously they couldn't clone all the old Kyocera printer's settings apart from the I.P. (so at least I could get into the web interface) although I can't tell if there is an 'admin' log in as I can't see anywhere to add in job accounting codes. I also managed to half install it on a client, but as soon as I went into the properties it asked me about the certificate again and I can't have that on clients. I really don't need it to do anything special, just print from the network. Anyone got any experience with these printers to save me spending ages tomorrow working it all out myself from scratch?

Unfortunately this is another one of those issues which is impossible to do any meaningful internet research on... also a very generic (thanks Microsoft) error message! Of course it doesn't help that it seems to happening at random... Most results focus on actually having enough physical RAM, but I think 8GB is OK for basic day to day teaching laptops (and I'm going to presume you've run Task Manager/Resource Monitor and ruled out not actually having enough RAM). Also the fact that you can run the program (just not from a desktop shortcut) suggests something else is going on... What application was used to record? Sorry, I don't have voice recorder/voice memo enabled on our student iPads so I can't check. But my old iPhone sends 'Voice Memos' to a 'Recently Deleted' folder in the app and I can just restore them... Good luck!

It's not particularly cool, funny or clever but I had to share... Had to time something today and opened the stopwatch on my phone and it was already going.... guess I had to time something at some point and forgot all about it (man that's going to be a really hard boiled egg)! 8717:50:48.80 So, roughly 8717 (hours)/24 = 363 days? For some reason I also think I feel a bit mean stopping it before it got to the year! Thing is I've just tested it and even turning the phone off and back on, it seems to keep going.... I started the stopwatch and then turned the phone off immediately (keeping a count of the seconds in my head) then restarted it and when it came back up, went into the stopwatch... I'd counted to 86 so 1 minute 26 seconds.... the stopwatch said 01:28.09... so I was a couple of seconds out but... what?!

I'd agree, separate bun doesn't sound very appetising to me however, if I can eat it altogether depends... If it's something like an anaemic, flat, limp, tasteless MacDonald's effort it's no problem.... Burger King (superior) is a little trickier, but can be done... Then there are those slightly more expensive restaurants that pile it 5 or 6 inches high and that's impossible, so it gets disassembled a little and eaten with cutlery (although not to the extreme of the @PureDarkStar method).

Yeah, I get that using 'other' types of user accounts or password changes complicates matters, especially when you have set it to sign-in as one thing. I didn't want to use 'session' and as I'm quite new to Veeam and also haven't got round to creating all the various accounts I probably should (standard user for server log-in and Veaam user for Veeam log-in) I'd rather have a log-in dialogue. The thing is I had it set-up with a shortcut on the desktop to open to a password prompt before the upgrade (but I can't remember how I managed that), after the upgrade it also placed its standard shortcut on the desktop too, I clicked on the 'old' and the 'new' shortcut but get the access denied message. What is confusing me is that it will accept the 'session' credentials, but not the manually typed in credentials of the session! I also thought I'd read that the domain admin could always sign-in unless specifically removed...

Just to clarify, I think my iPhone 5s can do 4G but I've never bothered switching over to it in the settings. I honestly use my mobile data so little and nobody ever calls me (apart from scammers and even that's very rare) so...

Just upgraded to v12 and although I thought I'd read the install screens and chose the correct options, I can't log in to the console. Well, when I say I can't I mean that I can get in if I tick 'Use Windows session authentication' but if I don't and try to type in the domain\administrator password it says 'Failed to connect to Veeam Backup & Replication server. Access denied'. Not quite sure how that works as the Windows session is signed in as the Domain Administrator...

We have an 4 iPad storage units (chained to the wall - so no movement), 1 in each class per year group (and the 30 iPads are shared between the 3 classes in each year group) that have containers which can be taken to classrooms. Up until recently, I would go round after school and make sure they were all present and correct, all charging and then lock them up (this was a hangover from when we only had a couple of units in a central place and I was responsible for handing them out and putting them away again). Anyway after a couple of years this got really tiresome and if ever I left early needless to say it didn't get done... There was also more than one occasion where I had gone to a class and found loads of iPads missing because they hadn't been returned. Then we had a few scares when there was only one missing... obviously as I was going round after school the children and most of the teachers had already left, so this resulted in me doing a frantic search of "every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area"... well not really but all the classrooms. Eventually one was found on a teacher's desk, but in a filing tray under some paperwork (sometimes they use them for photographs and don't return them if they haven't had time to copy them off or return), one was found in the library, one miraculously reappeared (nobody knows where from) and one was returned from a very sheepish child... After those incidents suffice to say I pushed back strongly to the SLT that it should be teachers and TAs that should bear the responsibility of returning them/accounting for them all and locking them away (preferably before the children leave for the day, but definitely before they do). Normally they're pretty good, but I do random spot checks and still find some missing or the unit unlocked (and unfortunately I can't just walk away, so I resolve but still report to SLT) but day to day I leave it up to them. If the iPads aren't plugged in and charged or they've been left in a classroom and they aren't available to use it's only the teachers who will be inconvenienced. The down side is that if one goes missing or has been damaged, I won't know about about it immediately, but it's a compromise I can live with.

I guess I should be bouncing off the walls, but I think I must have built up a tolerance, I even have a slightly weaker version before I go to bed... Mind you I just like the taste, I'm the weird one that loves coffee and walnut cake and all the coffee flavoured chocolates... I was the only one disappointed when that little round Revel turned out NOT to be the coffee one! Ah, you beautiful weirdos... I knew you wouldn't let me down! I'm not as bad as when I was younger.... I will do this, but it's rare these days I ever eat a 'proper' meal that I can do it with, plus I've managed to 'adult' myself into thinking it's not necessary, so for something like a Sunday roast I will always mash the roast potatoes in with the gravy and use that to disguise the rest of the veg, but then I will eat everything in turn equally (but always saving a 'best bit' for last). I also have have favourite combinations in each mouthful, like with my salad I will have chicken, tomato and coleslaw on the first, then beetroot, cucumber and lettuce on the next! Or with a fry-up, it has to be sausage with beans and bacon with egg...

This! I'm right handed and yet hold my cutlery the 'wrong' way.... so does my dad and I guess that's where it comes from. If I'm honest I see both sides... as your knife is doing a lot of the work you would want it in the most dextrous hand, but hand to mouth is just as important and I always say if I were just eating with a fork I would probably have it in my right hand, so why when I add a knife in would I then swap?

This is quite a divisive question... are you looking to hire or fire someone? It really depends on what level of 'support' the school sees as essential (versus what they can afford and what view they have of I.T. support in general). I work solo, but full-school-time (TT+3 weeks) in a very small school with minimal I.T. (350 students, 150 iPads, 40 laptops, 40 desktops - 30 in an ICT suite, 2 physical servers, 1 network stack, plus all the usual school I.T. paraphernalia - no refresh policy - basically fix it until you can't, then we will think about buying a new one) and although ultimately I feel my job may eventually be farmed out to a 3rd party support company (due to budget squeeze), it has been stated quite clearly by more than one Headteacher and more generally the SLT that they view my role as 'essential' to promote the uninterrupted flow of T&L. In a way I'm lucky, the Head comes from a school where they have been used to full-time, permanent, in-house support and feels that it is necessary for the smooth running of the school. Also various members of SLT have horror stories of things going wrong during important times and having to submit tickets that get a 'we will respond according to our agreed SLA in 3 days' (or whatever), or "yes, put it on the list and we will look at that if we get time in the half-day on Wednesday that you pay for"... So far (11 years and counting) it appears it is worth my wages to be able to get me to pop into a classroom and set something up (or fix it) 5 minutes before a lesson/assembly/play/parent presentation. Not convinced it will last forever as budgets get squeezed further and other T&L issues get prioritised, but for now it's all good and everyone is happy... Unfortunately I haven't risen to the dizzying heights of being able to control budgets, renegotiate contracts, force users to utilise what we already have instead of signing up to whatever platform is the flavour of the day (they employ a Business Manager and a large SLT for that) but that's up to them, I do often bring it up in conversation... As for how many boots on the ground you need, that can also be dependant (as others have said) on the skill level of other staff (I get called to classrooms on the daily to press Windows + P, or just plug things in and switch things on for some of the less tech savvy TAs), the age/condition of hardware (also whether things like projectors/whiteboards vs. interactive displays are used, physical servers or cloud, Chromebooks, iPads, which desktops if any, how many ICT suites, how often it is all refreshed). Going by a comment further up, 1 tech to 100 endpoints (devices) would mean a school with 300 iPads needs 3 techs... and we all know that isn't true. Possibly with 300 desktops/laptops though... but even then it depends on a few other factors.

Thanks, but I think the 'reservation' thing is going to be a little over my head... DHCP is run from our Cisco switches and not our servers. DNS is run from our servers but although the Macbook never registers in there, it won't connect without them in the config (on static of course).
