Well, most of it's way over my head, but a quick Google is just stating the obvious... "The error message "self signed certificate in certificate chain" typically occurs when the SSL certificate used by the server is self-signed or not trusted by the client" So something like, you have a certificate the server doesn't like in your 'chain'... Possibly SSL, so although you've removed the computer from decryption is it still reading the certificate?

I guess it's a question of whether you believe you are doing the best for your school, yourself, or your successor... is a simple set-up bad if it does the job? Does using the same infrastructure solutions that enterprise use for tens of thousands of worldwide users for c.1000 users on one site really make things better? Or does it just make you feel like a cool, bad-ass sysadmin? iirc someone was saying that they'd had a set-up implemented that enabled 15 minute snap-shot backups... or that they could be backup and running in half an hour after some sort of server failure... can this not be done on a 'traditional' server set-up with RAID then...? It's an interesting subject, maybe worth its own thread as it's a bit more involved and off-topic than the discussion on the benefits/downfalls of RAID 5, 6 or 10, but it would be one of my worst nightmares to lose my job here and have to go into another school where the tech has had free rein with no oversight for years (I mean I know we all do to some extent because we are the only ones who know what we're doing)... It would be daunting to start a job in a place where everything is running on linux servers, bespoke software and open source projects, or cheaper unsupported 'alternative' versions. All of it requiring downloading and implementing various packages from Github or the like, a healthy dose of coding and a fair amount of Enterprise grade infrastructure knowledge... I mean I guess there would be copious amounts of documentation to go through before you'd dare push a button... and we all know there'd be no time for that as you'd have people banging on your door from day 1... I mean we've probably all got a few workarounds that we've had to use to get the software used by the Science Dept. running... but I don't know if I should actually be worried that I can almost guarantee any one of you could walk in here and have it all under your belt in an hour or so... When I moved house recently I found my old PS1 in the attic and thought I'd fire it up for old time's sake and to see if it even still worked (although I should have been clearing, boxing etc.), well even the difference from then to now was shocking... I loaded up Tomb Raider (because I've played a couple of the more modern iterations recently), honestly I didn't remember how clunky and awkward it was... and the graphics... was it really this bad..? Somehow I remember it being better... although I keep forgetting it was nearly 30 years ago! How is that possible... because the 80s were only 20 years ago weren't they...?

Yeah I definitely think the younger generation have a higher expectation of both the gameplay and the graphics, they've never really known anything else... but it's not just that, they've been spoilt by games consoles and PC games that are visually stunning and pretty immersive, plus played in the comfort of your own home... We had a modern (if not futuristic) electronic game to play like we were some sort of alien killer super hero (beats staying at home playing board games with the family). However, I'm surprised even the modern games were busy, I would have thought arcades in general were a dying breed, but I suppose if they don't have a modern PC or console at home or actually want to get out of the house and meet friends irl as part of 'going into town' or maybe a 'whilst on holiday' thing, there's a place for them... Haven't really bothered with AI much so far, but the Headteacher came back from a Google 'thing' (so I knew I was going to get loads of 'can we do this?' and 'can we do that?' requests...) anyway, they requested I unblock Gemini and NotebookLM... So, thought I'd have a quick 'chat' with Gemini... Started OK, just asked a few general questions, then I asked it about music and if it could do a synopsis on a few of my songs from here https://soundcloud.com/user-30578642 I wasn't sure what it was actually doing by 'listening' to the tracks, but it knew there weren't any vocals, and it was heavy and guitar based. OK, so it didn't understand it was just guitars and drums and some of the other guitar sounds it had down as symphony instruments, keyboards or synths. I thought it probably took a lot of inference about the mood or theme of the song from the title rather than the sound of the music, but didn't do a terrible job, until it said the title of one of my tracks was the same as a T.Rex song...... Anyway, I let that slide and then asked it some other general stuff. One of the questions was about plants. It said the plant in question would be fine for a garden in "YOURTOWN, YOURCOUNTY, UK"... I said "But I didn't tell you I lived in YOURTOWN, YOUR COUNTY, UK", but it proceeded to tell me I did. In fact it said one of MY messages was "Remember, I am in YOUR TOWN, YOURCOUNTY, UK"... It repeated this assertion a few times, then said 'sorry you are correct', then repeated the same thing when questioned. So, after a lot more questioning, including me asking it to list our conversation and show me the message that said where I was, also asking it how it determined the YOURCOUNTY bit instead of the same town name in a different county, it admitted I didn't say any of that and that the information must have been 'provided' to it. How, or why, it didn't know... but it thought it might have been provided in case it helped at some point in the conversation. Anyway, then it seemed to crash and when I retried, it was 'taking a break'... I mean I'm not overly concerned that it knew where I was, it's not hard to work out a location from an I.P. most programs do (unless you are purposely hiding in a VPN etc.), just that it seemed to believe I told it, like it had been inserted into it's 'consciousness' as a memory of something I'd said...

iirc I had something like this but many years ago and I don't think it was on a VM, so I had other options! A quick internet search reminded me of the reason it's such a PITA... "The $BitMap is a special file within the NTFS file system. This file keeps track of all of the used and unused clusters on an NTFS volume. The MFT Bitmap is a system file that's always in use, because it's what stores how data is allocated on the partition" In the end I think I had to use something other than Windows inbuilt tools as unfortunately the OS marking it as unmoveable means for good reasons they leave this file alone. There's a few forum answers out there where people have tried all sorts like the Contig utility and mini partition, GParted bootable CD/USB, block level backups restored to a smaller partition, but honestly I probably would have used EaseUS PM (I have an older version that I'm pretty sure is virus free). Usual caveats apply, YMMV, possible data loss, have a good, tested backup etc. and obviously I cannot recommend anyone using software like that on a prod server... Possibly none of that is any good for a VM, but maybe there's something in there to help. Props for removing 3tb though! 200GB isn't bad for moving though nowadays is it, or do you have storage space limitations on the target?

We are also doing parent's evenings at the moment and all the books are piled up on the sides of the class for the parents to look through. Not sure if flicking through a digital device screen would be better?

Strange, I don't seem to be able to reproduce the multiple threads at will, it was funny that I'd just read the post, went back to the top, clicked on 'What's New' and there they were, so I took the screenshot and posted... Yes, landing on 'First Unread' every time now! The other thing is (nothing major) the notifications bell stays with a number on it for a while even when I've read the post (not going via the bell), seems to be a lag on updating what you've read and what you haven't. Haven't fully tested it, but sometimes even when I've read a post, after a few minutes I'll get the pop up saying there's a new post and the bell will still have a number on it.

Although I've asked here previously as I thought quite a few schools use GMail via Google Workspace I still can't find any answers... and I can't work out what's going on, or what setting/rule I need to sort this out! I thought it would be quite a simple question 'how to let an email through' but but after reading Google help pages and forum answers, I'm still no closer to understanding the process. We have a big change coming up and the process will require password change emails, so far on the test users every email has been caught and quarantined. Soon I will have hundreds of these... I've checked the matched rule which says 'Spoofing and Authentication (Domain Spoof or No Auth'), but analysing the headers in MX toolbox show all passes for TLS, SPF, DKIM etc. Anyway, regardless of the reason I need to let these emails get through. I've got everything ticked in Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Gmail > Safety > Spoofing and authentication (Choose an action = Quarantine) In Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Gmail > Spam, phishing and malware (Spam = Allowed senders list with all the 'bypass' options ticked) Quick question what do you put in 'address' on these lists and can you use wildcards like *@example.com ...? In Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Gmail > Compliance (a rule for Approved Sender = Inbound, If ANY of the following match the message, Location: Sender header, Contains text: example.com) Spam Bypass the spam filter for this message Contains text: example.com However, logically I'm presuming none of those help as it's not being identified as Spam...? Also I've noticed in the Email Log Search, these rules seem to only kick in after I've released the message from quarantine. Although, the MX toolbox header analyser seems to pass it also has this line - "X-Gm-Auto-Quarantined 1" and I've found an email that failed in my DMARC report as the emails appear to come from the platform they have some sort of extra information in the address such as "<header_from>schoolname.co.uk</header_from> </identifiers> <auth_results> <dkim> <domain>example.com</domain>'' and 'bounces'. Which might explain the 'spoofing' part...? Anyway, how do I get them through? Can anyone tell me if I wanted an email from [email protected] to get through without turning off all the good stuff?

Strange isn't it, a lot of us do love to stick with what we know and hate someone messing with our forum format...... Whilst also being very keen to thrust a new OS on our users the minute it's released. I mean "new is OK as long as it looks, feels and works like the old one" is what I'm getting! I personally have only had a couple of 'what?' moments, but on the whole find it OK, for what I need.. Maybe as someone else mentioned, it's time I should look at installing Windows 11, while I'm feeling so open to change... Some old legacy OS forums are amalgamated (or were these already like it in the old version?).. Anyway no, the multiple threads issue is not solved...

My issue was that I just like to keep my installs as clean as I can. Previously there were options when you installed VEEAM from scratch and anything I couldn't deselect, I uninstalled straight after. I try to keep my servers with the minimal amount of fluff, if it's not using it, I'll try to find a way to get rid... However, there were no options on this update as I believe VEEAM are pushing heavily for PostgreSQL and away from MSSQL, which is great AS AN OPTION, so let me choose if I want it installed or not... I guess there may be downsides to MSSQL...? But I like having it updated/security patched along with the OS and all the other MS software on the server, via the official MS updates.

Well, I've just spoken to my BM and we looked at the last invoice... sure enough £30 has been charged! First either of us have heard about it... 🤬

Sorry, you are with ASL print management/services provider? As in you lease printers from them? And they charge you? Is the box you receive from 'The Greener Side'?

We don't have a portal, the printers are 'managed' (and I use that term loosely) so, we have a contract but only for toners and doesn't include other consumables like staples. To get them from any type of original manufacturer would probably be prohibitively expensive, so we'd be scouring Amazon etc.

We have a number of Kyocera MFDs around the building and one of them has run out of staples, I've looked online but most searches end up with 'How to replace the staples' videos etc. What it makes it more difficult is that there appears to be 2 different sizes and I need to work out which ones I need and even the manuals don't seem to cover the sizes, only how to replace them. I think it even makes a difference what type of 'finisher' is attached to the printer as I believe you can have different versions on the same model of printer! Also, when I've looked at some of the staples online they're not listed or don't appear to be compatible with the all of the finishers/MFDs, but I've swapped them round and they do all fit. The MFDs are: TASKalfa 5054ci TASKalfa 5004i TASKalfa 5052ci The finishers are: DF-7110 DF-7140 Anyway, there are 2 places for staples... at the bottom of the booklet finisher there are two sets of staple cartridges... we have those, they are slightly smaller and are KYOCERA 1903JY0000 - SH10. However, there is another place for staples about half way up (the larger cartridge), but I don't know what they are as there's no real markings. Does anybody have these, who are a little more organised with their consumables and know what they are SH-12 or SH-14 maybe...?

Also, if you are running any kind of request list of 'nice to have at some point' things... On the 'What's New' page, threads I am subscribed to should be a different colour (a bit like the old site... sorry). EDIT: Changed now I understand the BOLD is unread... 🙄 Something like this... EDIT: I know I can probably do some faffing around with 'activity' and 'streams', but I just liked the way I used to be able to see everything on one page, with all the recent threads and those I'm subscribed to highlighted all in one place.

Other threads/posts in different areas of the forum have, so I'm not sure if it's some setting I've missed or it's a bug...?

I've been avoiding the PostgreSQL that's bundled with Veeam as I didn't want another thing to check on and update (actually not sure how I'd even do that) also due to already having Microsoft SQL installed and it getting automatic regular MS updates in the usual manner. However, the latest Veeam update helpfully installed it for me (along with all the 'missing' components that I'd uninstalled previously)... So, the questions are: 1. How do I actually know that Veeam is now using PostgreSQL? and 2. If it is, how do I get rid of this lot, or at least work out if ANY of it is still being used (nothing else that I know of is using MS SQL on this server)?

Short version is, I did actually post something and then tried to delete it... I couldn't work out how to delete it, but found out I could edit it and delete everything, but I had to type one character in order to save the edited post...
