  1. How do you clean yours? As far as I can see there's no choice other than taking the projector off the bracket as the filters are obscured by it, has anyone found a better way of doing it?
  2. Who cares when it goes chugga-chugga--chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga-BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM
  3. What's the engine in the Monte? Small Block V8?
  4. Thanks for all the replies, a replacement has been ordered (pending our bursar getting her head around the new financial year...)
  5. One of our Sayo PLC-SW36es has blown a buld and we need a new one in a hurry. Does anyone have any suppliers of this kind of kit? Our spare/backup projector is unfortunately locked in a cupboard and the D/H has the key, too bad he's off site today....
  6. I'm in the same boat, but on even less money. My plan is to stick it out for a few years before moving on armed with experience and the hard-baked cynicism (sp?) of the true IT tech.
  7. My dear mother has requested I find her a new printer and scanner. I saw that *spit*currys*spit* were offering the HP F2180 for £30, anyone had experience of these units? Her current HP 3650 has been faultless for years.
  8. I think you can use the %homeshare%%homepath% variables to specify mydocs, but I'm not sure of the syntax.
  9. 1: Yep, even the old Avensis is better looking 2: Yep, only makes sense in town, on longer trips a TDi would be a lot more economical 3: I wouldn't say that, at least unlike a smart/G-shizzle it has 5 seats and a boot 4: Apparently acceleration's not bad (with electric motor assitance) but the damned thing weighs a tonne and it comes fitted with michelin "economy" tyres, which are a fair bit less grippy than standard ones. All in all, I'll stick to my 1.8 litre Alfa

    From the ark

Our 1st computer was a 1991 Amiga A500+ with a whole 1Mb of ram and a 7Mhz Motorolla processor. No HDD, and only the single internal FDD, so games were a disk-swapping marathon. Our 1st PC was a cast-off from dad's work, a Mitac 386 with about 8Mb of ram and a 200Mb HDD, that served well untill our "new" machine, a Time with an IBM 300MHz processor, 6.4Gb HDD and a 32x CD-rom drive
  11. I've given up and re-installed XP and it now seems ok. The USB pen would always appear in dev manager, and if you instructed the PC to find the driver automatically, it would. The problem was when a non-admin user connected a USB pen, as they didn't have device manager rights, and thus couldn't install the drivers.
  12. I have a prob with one of my systems (xp pro SP2) where if you plug in a USB pen it doesn't automatically ask for drivers, and simply installs the device under unknown devices with a "no device driver installed" error. Hit re-install driver and it finds it ok and installs it automatically. I've tried re-installing the USB controllers in device manager, and they also come under unkown devices rather than being detected. Has anyone else experienced this?
  13. you could try %homepath%%homeshare% or :* rather than e:\* for example.
  14. I think it's a case that most people now know the basics of how to operate a PC, a much higher proportion that when I started as a student in secondary edu 10 years ago. Computers have gone from a minority interest to being much more popular, and more people are comfortable using PCs, but to say that all users have become "power users" is folly, as there are still plenty of people who seem to perform intellectual surrender when put in front of a PC.
  15. Your probably best off looking for a steel merchant and buying a big sheet of the stuff in, might cost a bit though. Have you thought about using old PC cases? Or are they too thick?
  16. OWNING A TOOLBOX - Even if you don't know how to use half of it
  17. Number 5 all the way, as I was the only lad in our student house with a car I was the head of the tip run, a quick spin to Wrexham industrial estate, just down the road from demon tweeks...
  18. We use a similar system and find it works well
  19. That sounds like it, would I set the connector to route via DNS or would I have to set a specific server?
  20. I have cousins in yrs 7/8, I let the teachers get on with teaching/diciplining them (but the threat of phoning my auntie/uncle usually makes them co-operate )
  21. I've started following the instructions in this PDF: http://www.itsnotaproblem.net/docs/Exchange_2k3_Restrictions.pdf To block certain students from having external email access, the main stumbling block is that it asks me to apply the restrictions to the SMTP connector. The problem is my SMTP connectors folder is empty, and I'm not sure what info I would need from the LEA/other parts of the system manager to create one. Is it possible to apply the restriction to another part of exchange or will I have to bite the bullet and create a connector? I've never really "fiddled" with our exchange box before, and I'm worried about breaking the blessed thing.
  22. Another vote for the 4600 here, I remember ours arriving as the main colour laser when I was still a student so it's done over 4 years work and steadfastly refuses to die.
  23. How do you arrive at this conclusion? I can't see anything wrong with the concept of being able to benchmark candidates against a given standard, and the phone ban is to ensure that the test is fair and not interrupted.
  24. Double-check that the CD/DVD drive letter is set properly. We had a prob where the user homeshare wouldn't map (drive letter h:) turns out the DVD drives on the HP desktops had decideded to become H: and thus the net use command failed.
  25. The prob with phones is that they're not controllable in the same way as PCs. Even if some kind of OS/Add-on could be written for the phones (remembering of course that each manufacturer's phone is different) that would allow GPOs etc to lock them down, at the end of the day what kid would want his shinny new phone locked down all the time? Even if you did persuade some of them to have their phones "doctored" in this way, they would feel agrieved that they'd have to cover the cost of the phone, so another dent in the IT budget. Your comparison with paper messages is flawed in the sense that if a kid wanted to send a message to all his mates, it would take a lot of frantic scribbling and an overarm throwing technique that could land them a place in the West Indies cricket team to do it as fast and (as secretly) as you can with a phone.
