Adding a drive on the fly or destroying the array and re-creating it? Adding a drive on the fly will depend entirely if your controller supports it, but something like this: NO RESPONSIBILITY IS ACCEPTED FOR THIS ADVISE AS ITS NOT AUTHORITIVE TO YOUR SITUATION Depending on what your controller supports, either 1. Power off the server and add your additional drive or 2. add the disk Hot (without switching off the server Run the array configuration utility either during POST or in the OS If the array controller/software supports it you should see your array and an additional disk See if there's an option to add the drive to the array. Plan B Backup all you data on the volumes that are present on the array (you can have multiple volumes on one RAID array. Run the array config utility and delete the correct array then re-create it with the additional drive included. Re create the volume(s) in your OS, format and restore the data Not really a job for term time though or for someone who's never played with RAID before as there are some fairly big gotcha's if you have for example multiple arrays on one controller.... Assuming it's a windows server look in the device manager for the model of RAID controller, then search Intels website for an online configuration tool. I've been using HP/Compaq RAID controllers for years and just had the first one ever stuff up the array! Only newer models of controller will allow you on the fly array expansion....most require you backup the data, destroy the original array and recreate it to incluse the new drive. Don't forget if you add one more 72Gb HDD you don't gain 72GB on the volumes.... Steve

AHHHHHH RAID 5 Array failed HP Proliant DL185DL
Ex-MGSTech replied to Ex-MGSTech's topic in Hardware
There's a customer advisory on firmware for the disks in our server, I applied the patch and it said the drives were not affected? I beg to differ, for some reason we have suffered the same faulkt as the drives/array controller fault listed on the advisory, but our are not listed as affected? -
AHHHHHH RAID 5 Array failed HP Proliant DL185DL
Ex-MGSTech replied to Ex-MGSTech's topic in Hardware
It's wierd, total Array fail but no disks have a fail LED? Looks related to the RAID controller/Disks firmware, either way I don't trust it anymore..... Manahed to get the array back online but have quite a few corrupt files Just taking a snapshot using richcopy at the moment! I had Shadow copies on another volume, but the've all gone???? Looks like a restore from backup of the corrupt files... -

That's outrageous, you should look at some kind of unfair dismissal proceedings, that job description is for more than just a Technician, the're advertising your job at a lower salary, constructive dismissal maybe? All Schools ICT Staff need to be wary of BSF suppliers looking to sack existing staff (on decent salaries) and replace them with cheaper less experiences ones to increase their profit margins:mad: S

It certainly makes it more plentiful, with a managed solution you’re tied to that supplier, often having to pay for extras etc It's much easier to recruit staff with generic MS Windows 2003 knowledge than Viglen Classlink experience for example. Our last version of Classlink was really just a web front end to Active Directory.... It may have moved on some since then of course I'm not saying plain vanilla is for everyone as if you don't have any in-house skills you will be a little swamped..... Steve

I'm not we ditched them last year! good riddance and helo plain vanilla!

They are targeting .sch.uk domain names. we had this email just this week You could in theory register a domain like yourschool.sch.eu or yourschool.sch.cn but the sch.uk domains are protected. The problem comes in where do you stop? are you going to register yourschool.sch.?? in EVERY country? Its a SCAM to sell domain names Steve

make the bank insolvent and unable to pay its pensions to anyone. Bit unfair I know but if a company went bust and haddn't underwritten its pension it would be the same.

I can boot the UBCD4WIN DVD and load any additional mass storage drivers form wait for it..... a floppy disk! Steve
