  1. I believe so, it was explained to me as being like RDP?, so I assume that you have to leave all your desktops on 24/7?
  2. Frog Learning Platform - Secure Gateway http://www.edugeek.net/forums/thin-client-virtual-machines/18807-ts-external-connector-license.html I can't see MS allowing licence free remote access to everyone can you? Steve
  3. Thanks! I think its an excellent idea too! Steve Happy for this post to move over:- http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/56505-kent-childrens-safeguarging-board-pleased-announce.html#post513164

  5. Passed this onto staff recently:- The following links give useful information for the victim in a Facebook hijack, or on the action required if someone is impersonating you on Facebook Security: Hacked account: Hilfebereich | Facebook Password recovery: Passwort zurücksetzen | Facebook Password recovery: (with no access to original email account) Hilfebereich | Facebook General Facebook Security Info: Hilfebereich | Facebook Securing your Facbook profile: Hilfebereich | Facebook Security: Someone is attacking or harassing me on the site: Hilfebereich | Facebook I need to report an impostor profile. If someone has created an account to impersonate or imitate you, please go to the impostor profile and click "Report/block this person" at the bottom of the left column. Check the "Report this Person" box, choose "Fake Profile" as the reason, and add "Impersonating me or someone else" as the report type. Be sure to add a valid web address (URL) leading to the real profile so that we can review the information. 7. I've been here too but without the pregnancy, the following "advise" may seem a little matter of fact but its based on my situation ten years ago now (I'm now remarried to someone who also went through the same thing but her ex got his secretary pregnant) Don't worry too much about agencies like the CSA. They actually REDUCED the amount I was paying my ex! If you give her money for housekeeping etc, WRITE EVERYTHGING DOWN from now on, all this can be taken into account if it comes to separation and maintenance etc Keep an eye on your bank and any joint savings, especially if they are single signature to withdraw everything! See a solicitor if your negotiations look bad. my entire divorce cost me £750 inc legal fees etc, Try not to remind her she is at fault if you plan on this relationship continuing Ask yourself can you actually forgive her for this?, if not make plans for you and your daughters future, however courts mostly award custody to the mother (unless you can prove she's unfit) so make sure the arrangements for access to your daughter are WRITTEN DOWN and BOTH parties sign it. Good luck mate but IMO most of your future lies with two questions Does she want the relationship to continue & can you REALY forgive her. no relationship will survive a loss of trust on either part. Good luck and keep your daughter in the front of your mind, you sound like a faithful father and she'll need you when she's older
  8. Strangely enough the KSCB has a responsibility for all children and young people in Kent, including those in home schooling, private education, looked after children etc. There's certainly been discussion of inviting private sector schools and some have definitely been before. Governors were a specific target for invites mentioned at a previous meeting so I'm sure as we are trying to get schools to nominate a governor with responsibility for e-safety I won't be a problem! AFAIK Oakwood house whilst a KCC facility is run as a commercial venture and as such charges even other KCC departments going rates (not 100% on this one though)
  9. I hope its because we are a group of people who a. actually work in schools etc and b. care passionatly about educating children and young people to keep themselves safe! Its also to those agencies who allow staff the time out of their normal work to do these things. Now on with the planning for the 4th(?) Kent E-Safety Conference!....all I need is a free venue for 150 people!
  10. Noted yesterday in our meeting and a word version will be made available soon Also any enquiries from other LEA's can be directed to [email protected]
  11. The completion of our 2010 E-Safety Policy and Guidance for schools. Schools and Settings e-Safety Policy Guidance 2010: http://www.mgs.kent.sch.uk/var/plain_site/storage/images/media/images/e_safety_guidance/5275-1-eng-GB/e_safety_guidance_medium.jpg http://tiny.cc/fp4b0 Schools and Settings 2010 Policy Template: http://www.mgs.kent.sch.uk/var/plain_site/storage/images/media/images/e_safety_template/5278-1-eng-GB/e_safety_template_medium.jpg http://tiny.cc/hplqm Poster: Responding to an incident of concern: http://www.mgs.kent.sch.uk/var/plain_site/storage/images/media/images/reporting_incident/5284-1-eng-GB/reporting_incident_medium.jpg http://tiny.cc/27d1n These documents are the work of the Kent E-Safety Strategy Group and are multi-agency working at its best. We have also not been overlooking adults working with Children and Young People as often there is little or no guidance for the use of technology in these environments. To this end we also launch the 2010 Kent Safeguarding Children Board: Safer Practice with Technology Document: http://www.mgs.kent.sch.uk/var/plain_site/storage/images/media/images/safe_practice/5281-1-eng-GB/safe_practice_medium.jpg http://tiny.cc/5d088 This last document has been adapted from a previous document aimed purely at educational environments. Further information, posters and documents can be obtained from: Kent Trust Web - Kent County Council - ICT If you use these documents, please credit Kent County Council where appropriate. We hope you find these important documents helpful in promoting E-Safety in your establishments.
  12. We have a mutiple approach, one of my Tech's wrote an app to help users change the volume name on any attached USB drives (we use USBDLM so the drive letter is always the same) he also wrote an applet to check during logoff for a USB pen drive and bleep the PC speaker and flash up a warning dialog.......we still get dozens left in rooms every week! S
  13. We also get this, just arround coursework deadline times??? We use Impero to see what they have done, it usually records them logging in, deleteing their own work, and logging off, followed shortly after by the aformentioned claim of "The systems lost all my work sir"
  14. Another vote for the HP 7900 we have the USDT ones with the builtr on screen (19"W)
  15. Version 3 of Impero has been "comming" for nearly a year now, the features look excellent however it needs to get here first!
  16. I think you may need to take a reality check as I don't remember unrestricted internet access becoming a right? You need to remember Henry, not all students are as upstanding as yourself. Our job as IT support staff is to protect both you and the network from abuse. School networks are provided for all to use and benefit, not to become the playground of just a few tech savvy students. Unfortunately we HAVE to put in place restrictions, not just for the protection of minors but to prevent the school from allegations of failing to protect its students. Each and every school in the UK has a duty of care to uphold and any school not seen to be taking SOME precautions may be seen as negligent. Also remember YOUR parents expect us to be filtering your access to inappropriate material, I as a parent would expect nothing less! We use Impero in school both as a monitoring tool, but also as a teaching and learning tool. I've used it on several occasions to prove a student’s innocence not their guilt! You should also be aware that the right to unmonitored internet access does not exist out there in the commercial world. Its highly likely that in a business environment attempting to bypass a companied firewall or internet filtering software would result in dismissal and potentially criminal proceedings, it is after all an offence under the computer misuse act to use a computer system for purposed not authorised by its owner! Regards S
  17. I agree , all the drivers. I'm the opposite on windows drivers, I've seen may a windows driver from MS screw up the NIC or video card working! On some of the newer machines you HAVE to install the ICH9 (HDD Controller) before you can install a Volume license copy of XP for example. On some of our Toshiba Tablets there is a note that says the security chip cant be installed under XP and drivers are only available for Vista and above. leaving you with the option to disable the chip in the bios as the only way of getting a clear DM Steve
  18. Here's ours Biometric IM Trial / Students / MGS - Maidstone Grammar School Slightly risky but I hope the BBC take it in the sprit intended!
  19. Ah, but in reality do they? I think the jury's out on that one!
  20. why not try bumptop desktop and have a real 3D desktop? BumpTop 3D desktop enhancement: Organize, customize, be productive Steve
  21. We have Parentmail, its not SIMS linked as such, but you can do your initial populating from a SIMS export. However once your account is SIMS "enabled" you can only ADD parents via a SIMS export/import You can edit people manually though.... It won't do an export that you can then use to auto-update SIMS it will do an export, but its then a manual job to update SIMS They have also just revamped the look of the site (although they've kept the horrible buttons!) Text messages are 5p each if you buy 5000 at a time and require one credit PER recipient, so if mum and dad register separate mobiles that's two credits Seem ok, but if like us you have 1300 students most with both parents registered then that’s upwards of 2,600 texts at 5p each (£125) per whole school text) This is still cheaper than post though! And we rarely send text messages to the whole school. Email is free and there's also a way of seeing who's read the messages without relying on read receipts.
  22. Gave up and went home at5:45! Its mostly up there now BBC School Report / Events / MGS - Maidstone Grammar School Let us know what you think?
  23. Not quite correct, the XU305 has both Wired and Wireless LAN, it uses a supplied application called Network Capture 5 (sadly not backwards compatible with version 4!) and will stream content (excluding video) to the projector from a single connected client. I have teachers with 60+ Tablet PC's each one can connect in one of two ways 1. Directly with the projector via wireless (however this then prevents access to other resources like the internet etc) 2 via wireless to the school network, then through that to a wired projector in infrastructure mode. This allows the user access to other resources and the ability to then display that on a networked projector.(assuming they can select the correct classroom!) Only certain models support content streaming and many of the Ethernet equipped ones only provide management facilities (bulb due, filter clean power on/off etc) The XU305 supports both, as do our older model UX88's. However, to support straeming video in this way would require a projector more than twice the price (PLC WXU700)http://uk.sanyo.com/Extranet/OnlineClaims/Products/ProductView?modelNumber=PLC-WXU700 We have in effect created 8' interactive whiteboards with a wireless desktop interface in the Tablet PC's Oh and before anyone says, I don't work for Sanyo ! Regards Steve
  24. Whilst I agree with your comments the following is also true: The UK Consumer rights are between the seller and the buyer, not the buyer and the manufacturer. in law and manufacturer can force you to go through the seller. The issue than comes into play what if the seller has ceased trading? In reality many UK distributors ship their products to Europe for repair anyway; I've just had a Toshiba repaired in Belgium! Having checked out the suppliers pan European operation I'm satisfied that they (hopefully) won't go bust anytime soon! Touch wood, I think I've had one Sanyo warranty claim on the 4 1/2 years I've been here. We've reached an amicable solution which enables be to get best value for the tax payers £ and I believe also secures the operation of the equipment for at least 2-3 years. Thanks everyone for your input. Steve
  25. Thanks, as you surmise the relationship with our existing supplier has a significant value. He did the exercise you mention and came down to £740 per unit. However after discussion we agreed he'd do all the mounting and extra data cabling and we'd buy at the cheaper price. This was based in a realistic position of him making negligible mark up on each unit. I've also eased the situation by giving him another contract for around £18k so that eased the situation considerably. I have sought and accepted the warranty position with the cheaper supplier. Also as indicated earlier warranty issued in the European EMA are legally valid throughout Europe. In reality it may take a little longer and give the warranty a bigger carbon footprint! If we ever use it!
