Hi All, Well got the funding for the SSCP exam from work, got the [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Official-ISC-Guide-SSCP-Press/dp/0849327741]book [/ame]for it, plus looking at the [ame=http://www.testout.com/products/sscp/sscp.htm]CBT [/ame] to go with it (as the funding only covered the exam and not the course). Has anyone here done it? How did you find it? -Ken

I've uploaded a screen shot of the wmi filter that we use and where we've applied it. The GPO that the WMI filter is applied to is attached to one of our user OU's and not the OU where the PC is (not sure if that makes any difference, but that's the way we're using them). -Ken

We use the Sophos WS1000 that then feeds into one of our ISA servers. Apart for the issue for the authentication issues when we upgraded to Windows 2008 r2 (which has been sorted now), we're pretty happy with it. -ken

IMO, it's not the case of ITIL vs FITS, as FITS is based on ITIL - slimmed down and less complex, but it's still a set of best practices within IT. Is FITS recognised outside education? I would say the bases/practices are, however the term "FITS" possibly not or at least not to the majority (even though FITS would be more acceptable to the SMB market). After all I believe ITIL not only had the UK Government backing it but also approx 10 year head start You can see this link from 2004 on TechRepublic's website, so it has been around -Ken

I did the Practioner course (waiting for the exam and the Manager's course) and I can say that it was very good. If you've done any form of ITIL in the past, this will be a breath of fresh air. -Ken

Hi guys/gals, Got a question for all of you. I'm looking at replacing our current wireless system (3Com), to a newer system and want to know what you guys are using, what problems you've had and what successes. The things that I'd be looking at is the following: 1. AD/LDAP authentication 2. Multiple SSID's 3. N standard, preferable dual (both the 2.4GHz & the 5GHz) 4. Easy to maintain (both administration and upgrading of firmware, etc) 5. Of course centrally managed. 6. Scalable 7. Support QoS I'm looking into Ruckus, and will be looking into Aruba, any others out there worth a look? -Ken

Just double checking, have you checked your switches (assuming that they are managed ones) to see if there are any excessive broadcasts or loops in your network. Also have you made sure that there aren't any rouge DHCP/DNS servers on your network? Eg external print servers, something along the lines of these that are mis-configured. -Ken

I believe that I have a script somewhere at work that should delete the libraries, if I remember I'll post it up here tomorrow. However haven't fully tested the script... -Ken

We tried a small run with Vista and it failed... The majority of machine run XP (a handful of teacher/staff machines are running 7 & vista), so we'll be upgrading machines to 7. -Ken

We're getting ready for Win7 deployment, so far the problems that we're experienced/experiencing*: 1. With the existing GPO's in place, when a student first logs on it logs in under 2 minutes, then the next time the student logs in it takes 10 minutes - Fixed, recreated all GPO's. 2. Document redirection - Fixed, the issue that we experience was that the owner of the re-directed folder was not the user. 3. Start-menu redirection - Currently working on, the start menu doesn't redirect, we had to recreate another GPO for the start-menu redirection, however it works on Windows 7 but not XP... 4. More to come??? *This is done with a test student account, a newly imaged Win7 PC, joined to our domain. -Ken EDIT: Update for number 3. Because students will be logging onto both XP and Win7 machines, we have to leave both the existing GPO and the new GPO designed for Windows 7 in, in order for the right GPO to work for the right machine we have implement WMI filters on both GPO's. This seemed to have the desired affect, XP machines get the startmenu they had before and the Win7 machines get the new redirected startmenu. More testing to be done tomorrow...

Currently employed in my dept, it's all male. However the previous IT manager was female (she left and I was promoted), we also have a female vounteer, but as she not employed I haven't counted her in the poll. No teaching staff in my dept (use to be), however we do have strong links with the ICT academic dept -Ken

There is a problem with some parts of Sims .net as it is still 16-bit (not surprised ). However we've had no problems running Sims .Net in XP Mode on Windows 7. However apparently it's going to be fully compatible with it some time this year... -Ken

Entirely up to you. Personally, I would go for either Enterprise or Ultimate (the 64-bit edition) and Windows Virtual PC/XP mode (for the software that won't run on Windows 7). However if pricing is an issue than Home is fine, unless you want things like XP Mode, the ability to join a domain (if you run one at home) and bitlocker... -Ken
