Someone took in a pregnant stray cat. When she gave birth he named the kittens after famous scientists. This live webcam feed of the 9 day old kittens is (inexplicably) all over the office here full-screened on the big TV's we use for Trello boards: TheScientistKittens Kittencam It's cute. To clarify: The kittens and mother ARE NOT subjects in an experiment (as far as I know) and the white pen is only waist high and Mum is free to come and go when she wants to. It is simply a pet pen to keep the kittens safe.

IMO they are fighting against monsters like WoW who have a slavish army of loyal gamers who are reluctant to ditch their subscription as many gamers have spent a long time with their characters and care a lot about their investment. I'm a WoW gamer and of my many many toons, the 9 'main' characters I have on my primary realm are like family to me. I've invested significant time in levelling and gearing them, getting them specced to perform certain game roles such as healing or tanking and I care a lot about them. I'm not going to ditch my time and effort, or the characters I know how to play without even thinking about it, to 'jump ship' to a new MMO. The new MMO might have lovelier graphics, better gameplay, more customisable characters, interesting game roles and mechanics, but when compared to my 'old' characters in my older MMO it's like the difference between a brand spanking new sports car and an old, comfortable Vectra ( I have a vectra so we'll use that but insert your own comfortable old car). The new sports car might be lovely and flashy and speedy, with gadgets and gizmos, but you KNOW the old comfortable car. You know how it corners and handles, you know every grumble of the engine and every knock and clunk, you know the biting point of the clutch and the sensitivity of the brakes. You have worn an arse-groove into the seat and the gearstick is worn smooth. But it's comfortable and familiar and sure, give it time and the same will happen with the shiny new sports car, but it's that awkward transition stage that you have to get through first and this is the problem EA had with SWTOR - they were asking gamers with established habits and patterns, to suddenly learn a completely new playing style with a new character they don't care much about yet. IMO, SWTOR should ALWAYS have been Free-to-play for the first 20 or 30 levels. They charged you enough for the game in the first place! £45!!!! That's obscene! Then to charge £10 a month ON TOP for a NEW game you might not want to play was a pretty hard pill to swallow. It really annoyed me that you get 1 month free play, but can't use it until you have set up a subscription and commited to that gametime payment or had already purchased more gametime! They should have allowed you to play for free for the first month without setting up the subs because when the gametime runs out, you can't play anymore and have to either buy more to set up a sub - thats the way WoW do it. It really put me off that I had to commit to more gametime BEFORE the game would let me use my 'free' gametime. If it had been free to play for the first X levels it gives a gamer a chance to become invested in their character. I really like my SWTOR character, I like her and I like Khem'Val (her minion). The gameplay can be complex at times but it's quite strategic and fun, but NOT fun enough to choose it over WoW. I have friends and established groups in WoW. Playing SWTOR was a really lonely experience and that was the key thing that put me off. If it was a single-player game it would be AWESOME, but I never got to do any 'instances' as I could never get a group. In WoW I have an established friend base and guild, and the LFG system is great for a quick-and-dirty loot farm. SWTOR was a beautiful and engaging game, but I never felt like I was playing an MMO so why should I continue paying for it?

The pair at the end make me out of breath just watching them! It's cute though.

LOL That being said, I was 24 when I met LeBoyfriend and we met in World of Warcraft when we were both members of a raiding team and when he found out I was a 24yo woman he was surprised as he apparently thought I was a 'squeaky-voiced 15yo boy' from the way I sounded on teamspeak... So it can be hard to judge, and if they were putting on a falsetto voice or are genuinely squeaky it might be easy to believe the person is a 3yo. I am MORE surprised that in the 33 minute call they managed to maintain the illusion and maintain a cognitive level appropriate to a 3yo as it could be easy to slip up and say something that a 3yo wouldn't necessarily have the cognitive development to come up with. So either they planned it, which makes it 10x worse, or they are genuinely stupid enough to pull it off. I'm amazed that if there were 2 of them, how come the operator didn't hear one of them laughing or giggling in the background? How do two 10yos manage to make a prank call last 33 minutes without one or other of them breaking down into giggles and blowing it? When I taught a year 7 class the girls were always giggling over something or being set off by innocent phrases such as 'magma that has cooled and gone hard is called...?' cue giggling and laughter 'tee hee... 'went hard'... giggle giggle'. Cue teacher sighs. There is still something really fishy here...

Perhaps you're right, although @Marci s solution is extensive. I'm probably looking at this the wrong way as I am putting myself in the shoes of a person in an interview, but we're not. We're at our desks with time and resources. Although I quickly worked out that code was needed, I lack the skills to write it so I think that disqualifies me from progressing further under my own merit. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing what happens next.

I reckon you're spot on, although given the time limit and the tiny text box, I'm not sure how that solution would translate to the interview scenario: assuming we're in interview situation with a 10 second time limit, the suggestion would seem to be that they are looking for a single line of code. I was working under the eval(string); // resultant value sort of answer. But I'm not a coder so I don't stand a hope in hell of getting this right.

I think the solution is in the question evaluate. Funny choice of word isn't it? Specific. I think I'm close to an answer, but I'm either wrong or too slow. I have a suspicion that if you are within the time and wrong, you are 'wrong' but if you are outside the time the result doesn't differentiate between right and wrong answers, you are always 'too slow' regardless of whether your answer is right or not. I think copy/paste is needed, but I suspect it is only to insert into a string of some kind, but I can't determine if the resultant value needs to be present. As an interview question, I would suspect not as those kinds of calculations don't exactly roll off the top of your head meaning that the correct answer is some sort of query, but I have yet to succeed on this. That being said, I can't write code so I'm not surprised.

I think there is more to the question than meets the eye, but so far my attempts have failed. Having looked into the domain owners I'm following a different line of reasoning, but I am still too slow to provide an answer which suggests to me that the calculation is either irrelevant or must needs be copy/pasted in some way and the answer lies in syntax rather than resultant value... But these are speculations, as at present I am still unable to solve this.

I'm not fast enough either :-( It's frustrating. I don't think it is cheating to use a calculator as some of the figures are pretty intimidating.

Community service isn't always about picking up litter on motorways or clearing drug dens of needles. Community service can be about performing services for the elderly or getting involved in youth projects or local community projects which might be ideal work for a 10yo (obviously project dependant). I think Community service would be the IDEAL punishment as it would deprive them of their leisure time and force them to behave responsibly - I can't think of a more apt type of recompense for their actions. Although perhaps not a year - a time period more appropriate to their age and the severity of their actions. Perhaps if these children had something more purposeful to do with their time they might not have time for prank calls...

It is censoring discussions on breastfeeding in this way that promotes ignorance amongst new and prospective mums. So no, I don't think we should stop the discussion. I think every woman will have a different experience of Breastfeeding based on her physiology and health and that of her baby. I have plenty of friends (believe me, my facebook feeds are flooded with baby baby baby at the moment as almost all my friends from school, former colleagues and family members are all either pregnant for the first, second or third time, new mums or mums of toddlers...) who will happily tell you that breastfeeding was the most wonderful experience in the world and the only time they had pain was when they suffered mastitis, and there will be others who will tell you that they tried and hated it, and others again who will never try it. If a woman has the right attitude towards breastfeeding and is willing to try it, her subsequent experience is a matter of personal choice and personal experience. I think it is a terrible shame and demonstrates poor education when prospective mums refuse to even TRY to breastfeed based on something 'someone else said' or something they 'read on the internet' - just because one woman had a bad time doesn't mean everyone will and it is the scaremongering and general ignorance that makes breastfeeding such a misunderstood and contentious topic. It makes me really angry when I see people abuse a breastfeeding woman. That is not to say that a woman should just disrobe at every opportunity, but equally she should not have to hide her actions as they are not shameful. Every woman will have a different experience - some have a great time with their first baby and a terrible time with their second, others will prefer to express their milk manually or with a pump then bottle feed it. I think it is important for all new mums to be properly educated and not to listen to scare stories they read on the internet and evaluate breastfeeding as a solution for them based on their experience of it. If they have a horrible experience, fine, fair enough, by all means find a different solution that works for you based on your actual personal experience, but don't discount it as an option from the get go just because you hear bad things! Personally, I certainly intend to try it, and if I can, I'd prefer my children to have breastmilk. But if upon trying it and evaluating the experience for myself, another option is better for the health of me and my baby, then I will choose that - but it will be an informed choice based on experience, not one based on ignorance and 'stuff I heard on facebook'. It sounds like your technician has tried it, experienced it for herself and chosen an alternative which demonstrates perfectly the point that a woman can only make a properly informed choice based on her own experience and not that of others.

The problem is not education, the problem is the parents. Either they do not discipline their children properly, instill correct moral values on them, or have been hampered by the nanny state into having no power to discipline. There is a HUGE difference between giving a naughty child a smack on the hand or bum and beating them to within an inch of their lives and it is the inability or apathy of parents when disciplining their children that is the root cause of these issues. IMHO. The family unit has been so eroded by government intervention and societal change that moral values are no longer instilled in children. They think it's okay to put their hands in a dirty nappy, smear it on someone's face and yell 'Poo hands'. Their ineffectual or indulgent parents stand by and laugh whilst their child run riot then wonder why they can't control them at home. Partly because there is a morbid fear of social services being called if you dare to give a screaming bratty child a smack on the hand or bum. 'Don't hit Mummy, that's not nice' is about as effectual against a kicking, screaming 5yo as a fart is in a tornado!

Well exactly! Which begs several questions really: 1) Have the police fudged up? Have they somehow failed to have the correct call monitoring in place? 2) If the call was from a mobile phone and the cell location can be identified, a quick 'Google search' should yield possible addresses so what is wrong with the data they received? 3) The call was 33 minutes long. Why did the operator only manage to get 4 pieces of usable information: Ellie, Stacey Hall, 23, court? There are lots of questions you can ask a 3yo to get better answers: 'do you go to nursery/playgroup'?, 'what can you see out of the window'? 'Does anyone else live with you?' 'how do you get into your house? Do you have to climb stairs or go in a lift or do you have a garden?' Blimey even getting 1 word answers to those three questions would give you more to go on! Smell a rat indeed! What variety remains to be seen.

There are inconsistencies in the various stories. The BBC is reporting "During the call, which lasted 33 minutes, she said her house number was 23 and her address contained the word "Court". (BBC News - West Yorkshire Police appeal over girl's 999 call) So how can they expect to get a response when different sources cite different address details. Beaten to it by JJonas, but our point is the same. If she made a call, how come they can't backtrack the call like they claim to be able to do?

How terrible! Considering how vitally important it is, our young are so poorly educated on such an important topic! In the moments following Labour, breastfeeding stimulates the production of oxytocin which helps the uterus to contract and expell the placenta and helps prevent post-partum haemorraging. It also stimulates production of endorphins helping Mother and Baby to bond. The Colostrum is vital for building babys immune system, is full of Vitamins helping to prevent eye infections and helps clear the bowels of meconeum which helps prevent jaundice. Breastfeeding itself shouldn't hurt - it might be a bit weird or slightly uncomfortable if the breasts are swollen with milk, but the act of breastfeeding itself reduces this. The painful bit is when the nipples dry out and crack or if the mother gets mastitis but these can be treated. They are certainly not reasons to never try it! What a terrible shame!

Lol being devils advocate, they do seem to specify the species now. Cartons of 'milk' usually have 'contains Cows milk' on the side and feta has 'contains Goats milk' etc. So it IS true that the species is actually specified on the packaging. If a calf drinks Cow milk, a foal drinks horse milk, a Kitten drinks Cat milk, why is it therefore 'disgusting' for a Human baby to drink milk from the Human breast? Our thinking is all backwards and wrong. If anything it is MORE wrong to feed cow milk to a baby of a totally different species! Adults no longer need human milk so it is normal that adults do not consume it, but that doesn't mean that it is wrong for us to do so, although I'd have reservations drinking the milk of another woman as breast milk contains DNA - I'd prefer to know the source (i.e. myself). Men make me laugh - they sexualise the breast and laugh joke and fantasise about kissing/licking/sucking them etc etc, but yet brand a lactating mother feeding her child 'disgusting'... It's shameful. You know I've even witnessed ignorant teenage boys accuse a breastfeeding mother of being a 'paedophile' for 'making her baby suck her t*t'. Our attitudes towards breasts and breastmilk need to change.

To be fair, the Cow's Udders are mammaries, therefore: breasts. So if we're being pedantic ALL ice cream made with Milk from ANY animal is 'Breast Milk' - the species is not specified... I'd be MORE concerned if it WASN'T breast milk of some description to be honest... Although that weird Soya milk doesn't count. It's not milk, it's a Soya fluid. Vile plasticy stuff. Stimulant looks a bit like a Lemon Swirl but I wonder if it is one of those 'jokey' ice cream brands with scandalous flavour names for the kicks?

Indeed. Especially as it's only £15 a bottle in the UK!!! It's not worth the hassle. Now Havana Club 7 year is £37 a bottle in the UK supermarkets and it's €17 in Andorra and at €1.23 to the £1 that makes my €17 bottle of Havana club 7anos about £14 a bottle as opposed to the £37 it was in Sainsburys last time I checked.

I suppose it depends on HOW MUCH. 2 or 3 bottles over you can get away with pleading ignorance because lets be honest - the rules are pretty complex and not easily accessible in one place as it took several people finding information in different parts of the HMRC site to get anywhere near an answer. If you're filling the case with bottles then you have a problem. But 3 or 4 bottles is easily 'personal use' - I know we always bring back 2 or 3 bottles of Havana Club 7 year rum when we go to Andorra as it is almost exactly half the price of the UK shops. Neither of us smoke and I refuse to use my duty free allowance on fags for LeBoyfriend's parents so 3 bottles of Havana Club 7anos is fine. @plexer is right though - coming back from Jamaica you'll probably have a few sniffer dogs floating around and your nervous glancing would be a dead giveaway.
