  1. IT support, what a way to spend your last hours on this earth! 'Click the start menu....' a hot mulled cider or wine would be lovely right about now...
  2. Thats incredible! What an amazing image!
  3. Wow, thats awesome! How are they joined? I'd be tempted to get the jumprings out and make a 'mail' effect... I wonder if I can acquire a job-lot of duff RAM on ebay...
  4. Lovely job! I especially like the use of the black cable ties in securing the bow and hanging wires. It looks more polished than the twist-ties :-)
  5. @sonofsanta is right, the smoothwall is clever in that if you input domain.com/whatever, it will only filter that exact URL and other URLs containing that string so domain.com/whatever/blahblahblah, but if you simply put domain.com the smoothwall will filter anything with that string in it so in a sense, the smoothwall 'auto-wildcards'. It is very likely that if you are using applications there may possibly be authentication issues going on, so you may want to try adding the domains to authentication bypass: Guardian 3 users: Browse to Guardian > Policy Objects > User defined If there is a category called 'Authentication exceptions' add the domain to this category. If not, please create it and add the problem domains to this custom category. Save. Browse to Web proxy > Authentication > Exceptions Add the following categories to Auth exceptions: SSL/CRL Software Updates Authentication Exceptions Save. Browse to Guardian > Web Filter > Policy Wizard Create a policy with the following conditions: Who: Everyone What: Authentication Exceptions, SSL/CRL, Software Updates Action: Whitelist Where: Everywhere When: Always Action: Enabled Confirm and save this rule. Browse to Guardian > Web Filter > Policies Move the policy you created up the table until it is above any block or blanket block in place for the group Unauthenticated IPs. You may have this group in a policy folder in position 2 in the table by default if you did not have Unauthenticated IPs allowed to use the web proxy prior to migrating. If this is a fresh install please check whether Unauthenticated IPs is included in the aforementioned policy folder. Save and restart the web proxy.
  6. LOL You want to try weeding a Veg patch.... I'm hoping my Tom will start spraying soon and chasing them all away! It's the dogs that poo in my front garden I want to get rid of... Honestly, I think from the size of the 'mound' it must be at least the size of a small car!
  7. Well, I'm not convinced they aren't being sly about it as usually when I visit 'Apple.com' it auto-redirects me to Apple.co.uk based on my IP location but this morning it didn't - I was left on Apple.com and had to manually change to the UK site to see the announcement. It might be a caching issue but I can't help but feel they might have jimmied with the auto-redirect so that UK customers aren't automatically sent to the UK page... Then again this might be my tin-foil-hat brain seeing conspiracy theories everywhere...
  8. It's not. Apple are petulent children. This saga is doing nothing for their reputation. It would be less painful for them to put up something that says 'We acknowledge the decision of the UK courts in the following ruling: Blah blah blah, and accept that in this instance copyright infringement has not occurred.' - that would be more of an apology than anything they have posted thus far, and would comply with the ruling and there would be none of this negative publicity surrounding their childishness!
  9. Whereupon they manage to get jobs in public relations for their 7yo siblings...
  10. I've been wondering about the anti-trust situation with Apple for a while now - how do they get away with it? The samsung product uses the Android operating system, but in and of itself, the OS is a separate product by a separate company (and it's open source) so it can hardly be argued as anti-trust there, yet the Apple products only run on their proprietary OS and getting them to do differently is complicated (mostly because of driver issues). It is probably not unreasonable to expect that a user of an Apple product buys the whole package - hardware and OS coming as one as that is how the solution is marketed - but even so they should offer other software options!
  11. Ditto. The first statement smacks of a petulent child being made to apologise by an adult! 2 weeks to re-write a page of the website? Do me a favour. They could re-write the footer notice immediately to make it compliant - it's only editing a bit of page code. If the front page edit is more complicated they then have time to do that. Or they could just put a temporary re-direct in place. Apple aren't doing themselves any favours at all with this behaviour - it makes them look like brats! I certainly won't be buying any more apple products. If I may have done before I certainly won't now.
  12. I can't speak for education city, but we saw this a while ago with MyMaths (which I believe is now resolved) where there are commented out lines in the flash code containing inappropriate words (in the case of mymaths it was a crude conversation between two developers IIRC). It is worth bearing in mind that sometimes if you have dynamic content analysis those 'word match' games and games that randomly generate content can trigger this based on parts of words. Is there a way to view the code at all?
  13. LOL I'm imagining Lion King/ Star Wars cross-overs here...
  14. Ermahgerd... This looks so awesome *Does fangirl dance*
  15. Perhaps what is left of the Trade Federation?
  16. Is it though? I'd love to see more of the Star Wars world and Disney certainly has the clout to make that happen. There are some excellent Disney movies. You just have to block out 'Hannah Montana' and the Straight-to-video sequels and prequels they churn out to keep the kiddies happy.
  17. I can't work out if this is a good or bad thing. I think there is still plenty of milage in the Star Wars 'universe' and it's an immersive world and culture that I'd love to see explored more fully. I'm not sure Disney is the right one to do it, but I'd rather see the franchise in the hands of a powerhouse like Disney, than fizzle into nothing or be mired in mediocrity (lets be fair, Episodes 1 thru 3 were a bit trite). Episode 6 pretty much tied up the loose ends of the Galactic Empire - Both Vader and Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine are now dead, and the impression at the end of Episode 6 is that the control of Galactic Empire has crumbled and oppressed systems are rejoycing in rediscovered freedom (Storm Trooper helmet drums anyone?). Anyone familiar with the Star Wars universe will know there have been extensive post-episode-6 books written - will Ep7 render these 'non-canon' or will it be sympathetic to the plotlines here? Luke, Leia and Han play a huge part in the post-emperor Star Wars world, but Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are certainly all too old to reprise an 'immediately post-revolution' role so perhaps we are looking at a 'next generation' storyline following some crisis or plot involving decendants (you never know, you might see Mark Hamil and Harrison Ford in it again) - similar to the time gap between Ep3 and Ep4 which allowed for the characters at the end of 3 to age enough that the different actors weren't a problem. Either way, fans have a choice to ignore the new trilogy and revere the original - it's not like they are re-making the originals.... yet....
  18. That is the best thing I've ever seen... I feel a small script-writing session coming on to make sure I have enough info to carry it off...
  19. I was plagued by these scammers - up to the point where their calls were so abusive I ended up having my phone number changed. It's horrible. My advice is not to get into dialogue with them. Tell them they have the wrong number and hang up. I have since invested in 'Anonymous caller reject' on my phone line...
  20. Yeah I tried that too - still didn't work :-7
  21. Which is great if you are that into music. TBH, I'm really not. I'll buy maybe 1 or 2 albums a year, if that. Most of the time it's a single song thats stuck in my head that I'll listen to until I'm sick of it then never hear again. I probably spend less than £10 a year on music downloads.
  22. Eurgh, this is so childish. If we behaved like this at work we'd get disciplined!!! The more time passes the less likely I am to buy another Apple product. That being said, the iPod really is incomparable, such a shame about the stupidity of the iTunes store...
  23. I tried tethering a normal kindle to a Galaxy SII and it won't work either - I'm not sure it supports the method.
  24. LOL I'm sure I've said something about invoicing these companies for my time in a previous Red Door thread about sales calls and cold callers. Kudos to this man for having the patience to follow the robot until they speak to a real person, although in my experience, when you ask them what company they work for they either hang up or tell you they aren't authorised to release that information. I have recently signed up (at a cost) for a service which blocks hidden numbers in the hopes of weeding out the ones that deliberately hide their caller ID. Virgin were doing a 'buy one service get the cheapest free' deal so I have caller ID and Anonymous caller reject. Although as they settled out of court, we'll never know what the outcome might have been if it has gone to court. I assume he would have won, which is why they settled out of court...
  25. I was recently party to a discussion that opened my eyes. One of LeBoyfriends colleagues has just bought his 4th house. 'How?' I asked, 'he earns less than you do LeBoyfriend!' Well here's the clever part I had never considered... Assuming we don't remortgage or borrow heavily against the house in the intervening years, by the time LeBoyfriend and I reach our late 50's, early 60's (earlier if we invest money we may inherit before then), we will own our house outright, or at least a healthy % LTV (easily over 80%). If we put up a % of that equity as collateral against a mortgage on a house of similar value (so 10-15% say), then 'rent' the place to our children to pay the mortgage, we possess a sizable equity. This is what his colleague does - he and his partner own 2 properties outright, which they use as collateral against other mortgages for buy-to-rent properties. As he rents them to his children, the issue of nightmare-tennants is negated. His children are also no worse off - sure, they won't OWN the house themselves until he dies, so you could argue that they are still in the same trap as renters (not getting any return on the money they spend), but eventually they will own it, which really is no different to having a mortage themselves as until they own the majority of the equity, they effectively rent it off the bank. To me, £100,000 in the bank will always be £100,000, so if inflation causes the value of that money to halve, we've effectively lost 50%. If we buy a house worth £100,000, and inflation takes it to £200,000, even if we 'break even' (in the sense that the money has the same relative value now as it did then), our chunk of money will still buy us the same 'value' of goods - a house, a car, whatever as opposed to half a house at the new, inflated rate. LeBoyfriend is a bit short sighted about investing and it's one of the few things we disagree strongly about - he has this grand idea that when he inherits whatever is coming to him, it's all his and he can do what he likes - I think this is a silly idea as he would be better investing it in the house so it retains some semblance of value, but he feels that he'd rather keep it for himself to fritter away. I'd like to invest in a stocks and shares portfolio but I don't think I'm brave enough to cope with the ups and downs - the ups, maybe but not the downs.
