At what point is a service considered to be processing personal data? For example, there are several websites we use that just get sent a list of pupil's names & year groups. Will we need a DPA for all of these? I'm assuming those that get given additional information like pupil emails, dates of birth etc. will need a DPA.

Simple enough to prove the flat earth theory, if any of them wanted to. Set up a laser beam on the west coast of Ireland, aimed across the Atlantic. I'm trying to draft our data protection policy, pretty much from scratch. Things are complicated by being an independent school, so we are covered by the details involving charities as well as education. One query at the moment - at what point does a school newsletter (sent out every week with what's happening - sports fixtures, trips etc.) become a marketing tool if we add on "please contribute to the new school building fund"? If a current parent has opted out of direct marketing but still needs to receive the newsletter, are we in breach of their request to avoid the marketing? Bear in mind the newsletter will still be 90% school bases, run of the mill details.

If the line is bouncing back and forth (that is, if you draw a straight line and it looks like a heartbeat monitor) then it could be interference. One trick I've found, if you're still in the dark ages like us and using VGA connectors: connect a wire from the VGA mounting screws to the earth pin of the mains connector on the back of the projector. I know it may sound weird, but after having several Smartboards doing this I gave it a try and not had the problem since.

Thanks jmak. A couple of our governors have a legal background so hopefully one of those will be interested and available to take on the role. Even then they'll need specific GDPR training anyway, just like the rest of us!

We're looking at getting a governor to fulfill this role, however as we are an independent school all of our governors are also trustees of the charity. Would this be considered a conflict of interest on being a DPO?

Thanks - we've tried to run evenings where we "stage" some of these scenes so that they're run at a reasonable speed. However it's been rained off and we haven't had enough players turn up, so the only video we have is from one of our tournaments earlier this month.

Dark Tower As a massive Stephen King fan I was hoping for a lot from this - expecting it to be the start of a sequence covering the eight books of the Dark Tower series. Disappointed though, Idris Elba was a great choice for Roland but the plot of the film only bore basic resemblance to the first book. Chunks of later works wedged in without any obvious reason, pathways between worlds changed from the original ideas, and the whole thing only ran to 95 minutes which was a surprise. Whether you've read the books, or never heard of them, it's not a great representation. I hear there are plans to continue with more films, and possibly a TV series, the latter would have been a better choice to convey the thousands of pages of story and character development.

What server is it? Can you find the specs online, or does it have any kind of built-in config utilities?

Had nothing but hassle with this. They've also removed the ability for a pupil to "resit" a test, for example if they're interrupted part way through. Finally got a reply last week to my frantic email, asking about the brief comment along the lines of "Maths tests don't work properly on Chromebooks, use something else." Shame the reply came three weeks after sending the email and two weeks after we'd done the tests!

Ricoh for the big reprographics copier yes, but looking at our smaller RISO machines they all use SMB but don't specify which version. Scan to email is probably the next approach, just seems crazy to have to send a document out via Google mail and come back again to the room next to the copier!

Just re-enabled SMB1 on the servers as it turns out no-one can scan with it switched off. Great to know our new top quality copiers are so up to date... Had to remove the update from our (soon to be retired) 2003 server as it messed up the login script. Also really helpful when you put a batch file into the staff network share (some PCs not updating GP to get the startup script) then someone deletes it!

Added the SMB disabling startup script in Jose's post above, as well as one to force WSUS refresh as some computers still not reporting. Hopefully that'll be all because my boss is still off sick so I'm going to be dealing with this on my own...just the 150 or so computers to sort out then!

Did that not long after the news broke, we've had a (minor) ransomware problem before. One person opened a dodgy attachment and it spread to the network drives. Fortunately it was picked up fairly quickly but involved pulling the plug on the server and disinfecting it...

I have two large (4TB) portable HDDs which I sync documents, photos etc. onto and then keep one at work and one at home. Not only an easy and fairly resilient backup regime, it means I've got a copy of my files at work if I need them!
