Cost of living crisis 2022 - what have you cut back on?
mrbios replied to Ditto's topic in General Chat
It's entirely circumstantial and everyone/household is going to be unique. Depends what you earn, how many dependents you have, whether you're living with anyone else (two wages obviously makes a big difference) whether you had pre-existing debts that you're servicing before the cost of living crisis started, especially if those are on variable rates. All that before taking into account the rise in energy prices or rent/mortgage costs, and how it has affected people differently. If you want to list off your circumstances, I and many here are probably happy to try and give advice, I'm very aware with my personal finances but never afraid to ask for advice in case i'm missing something, but i understand it can be highly personal and understand if you don't want to divulge such information. If you wanted to be more anonymous /r/UKPersonalFinance on reddit is super useful if you want help or suggestions, there's some really knowledgeable people on there for dealing with money worries or just general advice. Personally i've been very lucky, and im thankful for that, I'm not on a crazy wage by any stretch, but the cost of living crisis hasn't properly hit me yet (Though it's going to very soon unfortunately) -
NIGHTMARE - Large media files and Microsoft 365 Cloud Storage!
mrbios replied to ConceroEdu_Brad's topic in Cloud Services
If only you could combine the OneDrive/SharePoint collaboration capabilities, with Azure File Syncs tiered storage capability for the best of both worlds. Write everything locally, instantly like an on-prem file server while keeping all that cloud collab stuff. Will keep dreaming. -
BETT 2023 GIVEAWAY - What is your earliest gaming memory?
mrbios replied to VeryPC's topic in Our Advertisers
I can't remember which memory is my earliest, but it's either: 1. Playing Knightlore on a ZX Spectrum+ 2. Playing Nicky Boom on an Amiga 500 Can't remember which one came first, i think it was knightlore though. However i do still own both the ZX Spectrum+ and the Amiga 500! -
Thanks, that confirms my thoughts about wired devices being included in those limitations then. Is that limit based purely on the cloud management of them? So you could have more than 50 if you manage them locally? As I'm looking at wired solutions only, i don't think i'd be going over 50 switches, so as long as i don't get Aruba InstantOn wireless (highly unlikely) i should be able to manage up to 50 switches in their cloud management? (Sorry to hijack your thread a bit here @ssouth with my own questions, hopefully they're helpful to you too though lol)

Ah yea that's why i was looking at the 1930 i think, for the most part i didn't need the BaseT as being mostly Ubiquiti currently, i've got SFP+ everywhere. One or two areas i might put a 1960 in to benefit from the BaseT, but minimal... nice to have the option though, unlike ubiquiti where the only option for a 10Gb BaseT is to use a gbic, but they have a max cable length of 30m. (tried one at about 40m, was intermittent lol)
-
Good to know, thank you. I've not read too much into them yet, still investigating, but in looking into pricing, features etc. They look like a pretty solid alternative that ticks the boxes of the DfE recommendations that ubiquiti falls short on. I know the "InstantOn" WiFi stuff has a quantity limitation of 25 APs, but i presume there's no similar limitation for wired devices?
-
They're cheap, they work, ideally i'd have a spare of each model in use rather than relying on any warranties. However stock of them nationally is awful at the moment. and as mentioned above, no real L3 solutions with Ubiquiti. I'm looking at going down the route of Aruba InstantOn switches (1930 range) instead as a cheap alternative due to stock issues, added bonus that those still have the HP limited lifetime warranty.

Personally running FreePBX VM with no issues for the past 5-6 years. Works really well, paid for one or two commercial modules, but apart from that the cost of SIP trunks is all we pay. Yealink handsets across the board. Rather than SIP trunks with pay X for number of trunks plus free minutes, we also pay for what is essentially unlimited in and out, no free minutes and just a cheap pay per call cost, of which we're on our providers "reseller" price tier.

Offline files is/was a disaster that I'm so glad to be rid of. Shudder just reading the words... Have they "fixed it" in win10/11? or is it just used as a service for something else these days? Assuming you can't just migrate most stuff to OneDrive....Setup AoVPN and make your staff laptops "always online" devices and remove any capability for data to save to the device itself. It works out brilliantly. Issue with a laptop? Need to issue a new one? Fresh image and good to go, the member of staff literally just has to remember to connect to their WiFi and they're covered. To top it off our device management is cloud based, so if the VPN doesn't connect and they need support, we can still support without needing things like teamviewer, quick support etc. so long as they still have an internet connection. Came in handy in the early days of AoVPN teething issues. Thinking back to my XP/7 days of supporting laptops with offline files etc.... I'm surprised i didn't encounter more data loss issues.

That is a worry. My predecessor went around putting manual timer plugs on all the projectors because of people leaving them on. Needless to say, they were all thrown out pretty quickly when he left...besides the cool down period, it was also a constant problem with the time being wrong on them lol I would imagine that if it was an automated power off of the PC, rather than user power off, it would only be turning them off in the instance that they're left on by mistake, so the frequency of them being forced off like that would be minimal. Whether it does more damage to the bulb vs the bulb being cooled properly though is impossible to know....might be that the savings on energy are negated by bulb replacement costs down the line lol. I am trying to think of circumstances where they might be useful besides powering off monitors that are on standby, but i can't really come up with anything feasible.... guess i could use it in my CAD room to power off the lasercutters if they're left on perhaps.

I've got an inline usage reader thingymajigger here so i'll test one out soon. We've not actually used any of them yet, he gave us a box of 20 or so, which i assume he got free. Will be funny if they use more power than the devices they'd be intending to turn off
-
We were given (by a geography teacher) a bunch of Eon multi-plugs that you put the PC in the top, and up to two monitors in the two sockets on the sides, and when the PC turns off, it turns off power to the monitors. Not sure if they're likely to save much money, but could be an option for projectors if you run power to the same socket for example to force them off.....not sure how old they are, don't know where he got them from, but i need to make sure they're individually fused before we use them. All our staff PCs have two monitors, not sure how much we'd save if they were all fully powered off every night. Also using EMCO remote shutdown, really handy tool.

IT Manager is my official title. Went from IT Technician to Senior IT Technician to IT Manager all in the same school. Though my door actually says "Systems Administrator" on it. It might as well say: Network Administrator, Wireless Engineer, VoIP Engineer, CCTV Operator, Cloud Services Manager.... among other things, such is the joy of working in a school and being a "jack of all trades"

Try setting the same settings under Computer configuration rather than user configuration. I've found Edge doesn't seem to respond as well to these settings per-user as it does per-machine.

Smoothwall - Renew or replace?
mrbios replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I replaced smoothwall after 6 years of being with them (S8 and then S10 appliances) back in March with Sophos XGS. I was able to get a 3 year contract, TWO sophos XGS 3300 appliances in HA, plus the secondary PSUs for both (not important but they were cheap) for less than just the 3 year renewal of Smoothwall, no hardware. No brainer imo. Sophos has been great, was easy to setup without any help (though others have used wave9 i think to run through their setup for/with them, which is a handy service if you're not feeling confident) personally prefer it to the Smoothwall way of working. Only thing Smoothwall does better is the content modification stuff as far as I can tell. -
Enable "Client Device Isolation" Most if not all enterprise WiFi solutions should have something like that. So long as you don't have any devices on there that need to talk to each other, that should do the trick as far as I'm aware.

Ace, thanks, that was far simpler. Cloud trust has done the trick -
Windows Hello for Business - Certificates issue
mrbios replied to mrbios's topic in Windows Server 2019
Yep. There's two CDP Locations and two AIA locations, an LDAP one of each and a HTTP one of each. where the http one is http://pki.domain.net/pki/rootca.crl -
Really struggling to solve this one, as i feel like i've done what i needed to do to fix the underlying issue but it's still not working properly.... I'm running an offline CA with online sub ca PKI setup. The Offline CA crl expires after 12 months. Until the offline CA CRL expired windows hello for business was working perfectly. When it expired devices stopped working. I then replaced the crl with a new one issued from the offline CA..... that fixed the problem for a very short period, and now it's stopped working again even though the CRL's are valid. pkiview shows everything as happy. The only online forum conversation i've found about that outlines exactly the same process as i've done, replacing the CRL to update them then waiting a few hours. Has anyone else encountered this issue or got any suggestions for steps i might have missed?

Classic cookie but with dark chocolate chips!

LastPass here between our team too. If i wasn't so used to it and couldn't be bothered to change, i'd go with bitwarden though. Prefer it from what i've used of it. Lastpass works really well though.

Add another Veeam member to the pile. Then we use Backblaze B2 Cloud alongside Veeam to take cloud copies. However I'm still doing weekly backups to tape as well until the day our autoloader bites the bullet.

Broadband is up for renewal, who you using?
mrbios replied to Jaan's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Paying £396pm for a 1gb/1gb leased line from CoConnect. Support's fantastic, service is solid. Would highly recommend them. I've had poor experiences with: Voicehost SchoolsBroadband and one other i've forgotten the name of... -
Had to use Uniflow from about 2010 to 2015/16 or so thanks to my predecessor. In three words: Clunky, overcomplicated and expensive. Papercut is a VASTLY superior product in my opinion. Hope that helps

The only thing i could think Senso would be doing to effect it would come from the logging and blocking policy. Try disabling that policy, or setting it to log only. It does to MITM on the client otherwise which might be causing an issue.
