Given the chance - you lot would spoil all our fun. Our teachers use usb sticks (department pays) They get a warning about not backing up, viruses, etc, etc and we have a sweep between us. Pound a week, each teacher is 'given' to one of us and when one of your group appear at the door with/without said USB stick broken / lost / viruses, etc Its your job to include 3 phrases from a list in the sentence thereafter. If you manage - you take the pot. (mine last time out at £21). We got fed up of telling people along, long time ago....................

I hate quota's so we dont use them. Just a big stick, and from time to time to time the top 5 users in each year group get to sweep the yards, clear the tables in the dinning hall and clean the corridors. The top five staff get to buy me a bottle of something..........and delete any offending pictures / music, etc, etc

Remotely controlling/viewing networked computers

LanSchool. great stuff -
If you can plug in another laptop and it works, then this does suggest the problem is with the repaired laptop. There must be a difference in the two. maybe settings, but keep trying to find any differences. Look closely at the boot process and look in manual /search google for any PXE boot options / key combos for menus. Keep going Girl...
-
Little-Miss, probably not - but. When the laptop boots do you have a 'ctrl-a' (or some key combo) for PXE boot options before it tries for an ip address? if it does, check these settings against another, good laptop that gets to the PXE menu. You never know......

Just in case... This also gives us a chance to look over every machine. We clean every monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc, etc and change anything broken. we re-tie every cable, and re-image every machine(updated with patches, new software, etc) The damage is noted and if we can, charge the various departments for spares, or forward any problems up the chain for SMT to deal with - and they do - as we charge their budgets for anything we cannot get from the departments. (Headmasters rules) Out of 350 ish machines we probably replaced about 20 mice & 15 Keyboards per year. In four years we have had 1 broken screen (accident) 1 broken laptop screen (student paid for his mistake) and not one broken computer. we have had 2 m/board replacements, 3 HDD's and 2 power supplies No processors gone, no RAM gone. Secondary school, 1300 students. But projector bulbs...... now there is a different matter. As soon as I can, they are all going (including IWB's) for a touch screen LCD's with a glass/perspex front. Just waiting for the right product to come along.

We bought a Clarke 'Bandit' from Machine Mart with a 5 piece toolkit (includes a blower gun). I see they don't make this anymore, but google will tell you the spec's (I'm still stuck in Brisbane at the moment so I cant give the specs - yeah, its horrible out here!) We found... try to keep it light (ours is a multi level school so we have to carry) or wheels. DON'T let D&T or Art know you have it - it will go missing. Make sure you go over the power supplies thoroughly. Buy some dust masks from B & Q - it will surprise you.....

Every summer we blow out every PC in the school. Lid off and a blast from a portable compressor (about 120 quid). all the drives, power supplies, the lot. We think it helps - alot.
