Wouldn't they then waste time arguing over whether somebody had had a drink or had recently used mouthwash though? Having a level which is high enough that to hit it you have definitely had a drink and it couldn't be a background source of alcohol seems to be sensible.

Which is all well and good, but going back to my previous comment, how long before driving do you not drink?

Whilst I wouldn't want to condone drinking and driving, I do wonder how it's possible to convict somebody in such circumstances. The average driver doesn't have the means to know whether they have alcohol in their system, so in cases where somebody "accidentally" (for want of a better word) drives while over the limit it really doesn't seem reasonable to treat them in the same way as somebody who goes out on the lash and drives home knowing that they have had too much. I'm not saying that it's right for people to drive with alcohol in their system, it's not something I would knowingly do and I've never been done for drink driving. But I do think that this needs to be more transparent, there needs to be a way to definitively find out whether you are safe and legal to drive.

Such a law would be arbitrary itself though wouldn't it? How long after you've consumed alcohol must you wait before driving? It would need to take into account the quantity consumed too. There needs to be some foolproof method of knowing whether you're fit to drive, I suspect that for a lot of people who are over the limit it's not a pre-meditated deliberate act, but something that comes of not having an accurate way of knowing whether what state they are in the morning after.

It's worth remembering that for the moderators, every single decision that they make is going to upset/annoy somebody, either the person who's post has been edited/removed, or the person who wanted some action to be taken and the mod didn't agree that the post in question merited it. The mods on EduGeek seem to run a tight enough ship from what I've seen. The problem with having too many rules is that it can take away the ability for them to use their judgement and discretion, and it can turn the job of moderating into something more akin to a traffic warden than of trying to build and foster a community feel to the place, and turn it into a thankless, and unrewarding chore.

I wasn't including you in that comment, Gareth, I'd say you fit squarely into the first category continik defined, as an active member who makes a worthwhile contribution but has some constructive criticisms from time to time. I was talking about accounts which only appear to exist to post criticisms, pick arguments and generally troll, and suggesting that such accounts may be a second account set up for the purpose by a more established member as a sockpuppet.

I've got one of these Rextron Technology, Inc. but recently took delivery of a nice new machine which nas no PS/2 ports. So I ordered one of these Belkin USB to PS2 adapter x 2 devices - Misco.co.uk and I can't get them to play nicely. Plugging a keyboard and mouse directly into the adapter works fine, but plugging the KVM output through it doesn't get anything, not even the caps lock light on the keyboard. Have I overlooked something or am I in the market for a new KVM with USB ports?

In that case, assuming your webserver allows PHP, rename your index page to be index.php Have a text file in a directory somewhere on ther server which the head can write to, and can put messages about snow etc into, perhaps teach her the very basics of the header tags. You could leave a note about how to do it commented out in the file. Then on your page, use include("path/to/that/file.txt"); ?> and the contents of the file the head updates will be automatically included wherever you put that. When there is no announcement just leave the included file blank.

The trick to ITV is the Add Channels option - add the ITV Westcountry feed (get the details from wildsat.com) and it's much better. The reason why? Analogue! Since ITV shut down the Westcountry studios it wasn't worth paying BT to install links to the analogue transmitters for the few months they would be in operation, so they feed them from satellite, and so they bumped up the bitrate so it would look ok on analogue. @Theblacksheep - shouldn't be anything to do with Murdoch in most cases, most of the regional feeds are on Astra 2D, which is tightly aimed at the UK and Ireland, so they don't need to encrypt it, so they don't need to involve Sky and can arrange this carriage directly with Astra. A few are on 2B and have to be encrypted because they are receivable outside the UK, which has rights implications, and they would have to pay Sky for that.

My understanding of this is that they reduced the bitrate when some new, allegedly more efficient encoders were installed. People have said the picture quality (which, let's not forget is the whole purpose for the existence of an HD channel) is worse than it used to be. They also point out at the resolution is lower than Sky's HD offerings. The BBC, on its blogs where people have been complaining about this, has appeared to stick it's fingers in its ears, shrug its shoulders and try to claim that it's not really worse, people just think it is, despite people having recordings before and after which demonstrate otherwise. On a related note, I think somebody needs to kick ITV up the backside about the picture quality of their SD channels on Sky, they're appalling!

One technique that seems to be gaining popularity is not to have a green/blue screen at all, but a curtain made of reflective beads. A ring of blue/green LEDs around the camera lens gives the appearance that the background is blue/green and the lighting is much less critical. The weather on certain BBC regional programmes is done this way. The other thing to investigate is whether the software you are using can do a "garbage matte" to ditch the green splodges. You may also have some tolerance values for how close to the reference shade of green it has to be to be disappear.

Certainly seems that the "journalist" in question has been well and truly taken to task on his blog entry.
