That would refer to 'in the ground cable' - I'm not sure about catenary cabling but Virgin have said they wouldn't do this anyway. The BT fibre runs to the school via a catenary cable from one of their telegraph poles and Virgin can't use it as it is BT's.

One of the schools we support is having difficulty getting a Virgin Media Fibre connection to site. The difficulty is due to the school being land-locked by a resident's association who are asking for considerable remuneration for running cables over their land. As a result, the school has been presented with two options going forward; Option 1 is a fixed wireless link to another local school to 'piggyback' their connection (using a wireless non-line of site link over about 0.5 mile). Option 2 is to reconnect the old BT Fibre and continue as before. Personally I prefer option 2 but they've been informed that if they wish to proceed (at the moment it appears to be with either option), their annual charge for LGfL 2.0 will increase by 35% to just shy of £10,000 for a 20Mbps connection on a 100Mbps bearer. (Also bear in mind that they are entering year 3 of the 5 year deal and have been moved 'temporarily' onto an ADSL line which at best is capable of 1.8Mbps) Has anyone else had any similar experiences? Also, any opinions about this would be welcomed. Has anyone successfully set up Rav3 with a Mac Server? Specifically, I'm trying to set up CIFs on Rav3 to allow Remote Access to Shared Areas. It works fine on Windows but on the Mac.....

Does anyone know how to reset a cachepilot admin password? LGfL 2.0 switchover has happened at most schools now and one of the CachePilot's has a non standard password which no-one seems to know. Is there a re-image facility on them? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have a working backup script that can be used to create a folder on the server based on machine name (if it doent already exist) and backup selected folders there, its for some netbooks that are off the domain but we would still like to backup the local documents to a network share periodically. All of the laptops/notebooks in all of our schools are encrypted as are Flash drives which is where the idea came from I guess but it's a pain in the a**e if anything goes wrong with them, you either have 1 - to decrypt from DOS (approx 16 hours), rebuild/repair and then re-encrypt (between 3 and 6 hours) or 2 - Rebuild from a full disk image (with the chance of losing any local data). Encryption is a good idea for clients generally but it does come with some serious headaches.

Bear in mind that this is a fairly small primary school, a dedicated server room isn't really a possibility. It's kept in an admin office in the centre of the school (ie, as many locked doors between it and the outside world as humanly possible and not too much foot traffic either). We have bolted it to the ground and employ fairly strict password policies.

In fairness to the governor, the borough have had a couple of primary school servers nicked in the last year which is a really frightening prospect because, as you mentioned you can't easily sell a server down the pub which means they are after the data (there aren't many types of people who would value data from a primary school server - so the over-reaction regarding encryption is understandable). Still doesn't really make it a viable option IMO.

A Governor at one of our schools is pushing for us to encrypt the server. We've installed a security cage to the server to fix it to the floor but they want to go a step further. Has anyone actually done this? I imagine rebuilds or repairs to the server would be problematic post-encryption and also that there would be a performance overhead to take into account. Anyone have any other suggestions why this is a bad idea? Thanks in advance

We've been asked by a school to reset the SIMs Administrator Account password which has been lost. We've received a patch from Capita to reset the password but that requires admin access to the SQL instance (or so I'm told). I've already set the GPO to show verbose messages but I'd like to be able to create new messages to show, i.e. I have a startup script that performs a registry fix, then copies up a local Start Menu from the server share - instead of the display "Running startup scripts", I'd like to add some code to my startup script to output, "Performing registry fix" and "Creating Local start menu". I just don't know how to create a message to be displayed. That's if it's even possible.

Does anyone know how to output a verbose message in a startup script? I've enable Verbose logging and performing some minor repairs using the startup script but thought it would be nice to output a message using the verbose logging to explain what's going on. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone use any form of internal messaging system to send messages to/from the school office to teachers in class? Was thinking it might be a nice idea to have a client on the teachers PC similar to Windows Messenger that pops up if there's a new message from the office (or from another teacher). Preferably free Also preferably a system which is strictly for internal use only, so Windows messenger would not be a solution. Thanks in advance.

Whats the best way to make HAP as secure as possible over the internet, I am guessing disabling the HTTP option and only allowing HTTPS connections - if so are self signed certificates a no no and what other measures should be taken? Thanks
