When I took my exams last year, you had to hand in everything prior to the exam, you are provided with a white board\notepad and pen when you begin the exam, however the rules as of last year clearly stated that you cannot take anything in with you. At the end of the day, is he gonna carry answer cards with him when he's in the field to every possible scenario that he may come across? Not meaning to sound harsh, but that’s the long and short of it. Best of luck to him…..

That has worked spot on....much appreciated, I was on hours this morning trying to resolve that, I saw the internet explorer drop down and stupidly dismissed it. Thanks again. The duplicate thread was a result of having been working on this since 6am this morning.

I decided to make a few 'updates' to our GPO, However, since I have done this, whoever logs into an AD machine with that policy enforced is then unable to close explorer windows once opened, I have gone through the GPO report etc and thought I had found the resolution, but....no! Does anyone know which setting configures this? or is there a conflict which could be taken place between any of the GPO's?

May the 4th be with you - May the 'force' be with you. As in Star Wars aor Star Trek, i forget which i exactly!

Morning all, I decided to make a few 'updates' to our 'Secure' GPO, However, since I have done this, whoever logs into an AD machine with that policy enforced is then unable to close explorer windows, I have gone through the 'Secure GPO' report etc and thought I had found the resolution, but....no! Does anyone know which setting configures this? or is there a conflict which could be taken place between any of the GPO's? Thankfully this is only affecting my 'Test; account at the moment, as i backed the previous GPO up.

I have a few of these flash games in excel files which i removed from students accounts for research and development purposes. Pretty neat. Bad news for us of course. Let me know if anyone wants a copy to see what there up against. Perhaps we could compare and rate the kids tatics up and down the UK....LOL

We tend to just search for *.mp3 and anything that comes up we press 'Delete', if anything is majorly improtant theres always shadow to get the odd one back. I'd rather spend a minute restrieving a couple of MP3's than few thousand taking up space on the servers!

You could try Media Studio Manager from Zortam. I have used it in the past, it's handy and it's free. Zortam Mp3 Media Studio 7.95 - Reviews and free Music Management downloads at ZDNet.co.uk

I wouldn't mind a copy of that script also.......;-)

WHHoooo, i bet your relieved at that, coongrats. How has it affected your downtime in the college? I'm guessing with no security, the kids had no computers?!

We force a change password for all staff every 30 days, each password must be at least 10 characters long, locks out after 4 worng attempts, cannot be any of the last 24 they have ever userd and must be aphanumberic. A bit over the top, but, the restore requests have gone down from approx 50 a week to 1-2, if that.

Thats a long way to commute!!!

Where Do You Order Your Stuff From?
acrobson replied to stevenlong1985's topic in Budgets and Expenditure
I agree with eBuyer and Misco, personally had really bad experiences with Insight, wouldn't touch them with a 10ft cat5e cable! The education contact at Misco was a chap called Mark Conway. decent fellar. It may also be worth contacting your LEA, they can sometimes get things such as printers cheaper as they may be buying 50-60 for the LA as appose to the 1 or 2 you may require. We do that on bulk orders and some consumerbles. We have saved a packet. All they do for us is invoice our school and it's sorted from there. All in house really. The LEA may also have a list of 'preferred' suppliers/contractors, as we have discovered, often just in time, some can be listed from previous bad experiences etc. Kep your own back covered. -
We have used a company called Ultimate Communicate System (UCS), not sure if they offer the benches, however they have done all of our cabling etc for both wired and wirelss networks amoung other things. Worth a try.

Under BSF, we have to be 2:1 at least, however the school has also sold a load of laptops to pupils unsr some goverment scheme/grant, so this gets there target up to the ideal 1:1.

It could be that bug that Microsoft released a few months back, VISTA...!!! It bugs the h£11 outta me.........!

I expected you would have done, wasn't meaning to come across patronising or anything.

It may be a long shot, but it may be worth removing a machine from the domain and then re-adding or even giving the DC a restart. Long shot......but cannot do much harm given the circumstances. Best of luck!

It may be worth you bringing a pal on side you with a project such as this. If you know someone with design expertise and someone also with e-commerce experience offer them a chunk, depending of course how much if any you’re getting paid for the job. Be upfront to the bloke, tell him you concerns and then it's on his head if he is happy to continue. It could bode well for you in the future, but, if the guy is local and knows similar people you know, it could destroy a reputation. Paypal should be fine, you could also try Google checkout, not as commercial and requires all users to have a Google account, Not ideal and still ot very professional. Make it a team project, using mates etc with different backgrounds and try and do a bit of research online, checkout a few government websites and national guidelines etc, I’m sure there will be some out there somewhere. Most of all, cover your back, if needs be, even get a written agreement sorted out prior to commencing work. Best of luck!

That’s one thing that frustrates me, we re-place any machines 5 years or older and the old machine just gets chucked in a room ready for collection from a recycling company. All HDD's get shredded, and I mean by an actual machine which comes via truck outside the building and actually shreds the HDD's into cross cut pieces. These machines are mainly admin machines however, although pretty much if it plugs in the wall and connects the network; it gets recycled/shredded at the end of its life. Some of the kit is in mint condition, perhaps not much use for business/corporate use, but to a low income family/charity etc it would be up in the high specs in comparison. I can understand data protection etc, I know a few years back we used to sell/give away the machines very cheaply, however if they broke etc, they returned them to us expecting us to repair/replace free of charge. I suggested getting them to sign a disclaimer, but the bosses couldn’t be bothered with that. A missed opportunity I feel.

Personally only used the Latitude, Inspirons and XPS models personally, thought the Vostros were aimed for the home market mainly, i like the bit extra power......just in case, plus for ghosting. Whats you thoughts on the Vostros?

We only use Dell for our desktops; we used them prior to BSF and are happy to continue to use them. There reliable, good business service (Bad home user service from experience), okay prices, however I feel that although they are a bit higher, they do offer a more student proof solution. Such as incorporated chassis locks and the ability to bolt them down to the desks etc. Personally I would only use there desktops in a school/business environment, I would however use there laptops for home use, I fix them myself and found there v v reliable. Average spec for us comes in at just over £300, that includes a 17" TFT 2GB Ramm 80 GB HDD 3.2GHzish Inter Core Quad/VPro CPU Keyboard and mouse toooooo.... This may not be within everyones budget, however, we find compared to previous desktop models which we have tested, we buy once approx every 5-8 years as appose to buy twice every couple of years, given that the machines have an average of a 3 year NBD warranty.

Cute PDF for me too......Does the job fine and is so much cheaper than the full Adobe Suite!!!!

We had a large audit my the education LA. As we had taken over from someone who had 'been asked to leave' we were not sure ourselves, we were very soon down to a basic image! and i mean basic, they had no licenses for anything, well, at least on paper, of course they had more than enough verbal licenses! Thankfully, were all back to normal after a shocks to the management and finance team when they actually had to do there job!
