  1. I dont' not drink, i just prefer to not drink when i have the car, if you drive and have a car, try using that as an excuse, and try and take the car where possible, offer to give them a lift to the pub or whatever, the driver never drinks afterall!
  2. Good examples Torledo, that brings back memories of my first day too. Oooow the pain!!! I like to live by the say of 'Go out on a limb - That is where the fruit is'. In other words, if they ask if you wanna go out somewhere, say yes, your all grown ups and your own person, at the ned of the day, you have legs, you can always return. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, but it can be a positiive to go out of your comfort zone every now and then.
  3. Followed by all the kids then using that name for the rest of the term and using the excuse, 'Well sir called you Sue... Sue!'
  4. You tend to call them by there first name when there are no students around and always, from my experience call tme by there surnames when there are students/parents present. However, if its a more casual school that may not be the case. I would play it safe to begin with, they should give you the staff handbook to have a look trough on your first day etc, and if all else fails, do what the rest do.
  5. What a eggcellent yoke. Cracking!!!
  6. I'm driving a 97 reg renault clio, 5 door 1.4 RT. It does for what i need, although i am planning on getting the New corsa california before the insurance is due for renewal, it cost be 2100 quid for insurance this year, and that was 3rd party fire and theft. It was my first car like!
  7. I can well believe it tech guy. A comical teacher decided to send a student down for a wire mesh watering can, some tarten paint and a long stand. I sent them back asking for some fallopian tubes. That confused the hell outta them!
  8. It doesen't look like you can recover emails which you have permanently deleted according to Google mails help centre. Silly question, but it hasn't just gone to the recycle bin/trash can has it? They state: 'Recovering deleted messages If you've deleted a message permanently, by clicking Delete Forever in your Spam or Trash, it isn't possible to recover the message. If you've moved a message to Trash, by clicking Delete, but it's been fewer than 30 days and you haven't permanently deleted it, follow these steps to put it back in your inbox: Sign in to Gmail. Click Trash along the left side of any Gmail page. Locate the message you'd like to move to your inbox, and check the box next to the sender's name. Click Move to Inbox.' Here's the link - Recovering deleted messages
  9. I usually charge about £20-£30 depending what needs doing, if the machine requires a complete rebuild etc, I usually estimate about £40 when they supply there own OS disc. This also includes a Ghost disc which they can stick in and re-ghost there PC the months following my visit, it saves them cash in the long run and saves me going back for niggly things. Half the time I am too busy and tired with my own projects which I have on at work. So it may seem a little pricy, but half the time I wanna get them off my back. Plus, I have found it gives them confidence to try fixing it them selves. Either they do and there happy, or they come back to me and are really desperate. At the end of the day, it's at your own discretion.
  10. No problem. I'll keep you updated if i find anything out.
  11. I can tell you that there is as we are forced corporately to use size 12 Aerial as default, However i dont cover Outlook as my main role so as how to do it, i'm not to sure. I'll try and find out when i next speak to the email team though. Perhpas it's in GP's, although knowing our lot, they probably developed some app or script, they are big fans of inhouse developing!
  12. You could also try a company i use called Taitec Training, they offer centre based learning and distance learning packages, there prices are very competitive as well. If you have access to the courses at your local college etc, try those as your first port of call first. All you can do is compare. Best of luck. Taitec
  13. That's okay, but eBuyer have the HP equivilent with 3 years NBD warranty as appose to Dells 1 for £151.00 delivered (Super Saver). It wouldn't take that much cash to add a few more specs to it, if you buy from eBuyer anyway. Dells prices can be a liitle on the wild side! Heres the link anway: HP ProLiant ML110 G4 Xeon 3040 1860-2MB/1066 Dual Core, 1x512MB, Non Hot Plug SATA 160GB, DVD/CD-RW, 3 Year Next Business Day Warranty - Ebuyer
  14. We have been rolling out a lot of thin client terminals made and called 'Chip PC's'. Personally for basic word processing and internet browsing/research there great. Kids cannot nick stuff out of them, such as HDD and Ramm like they did with our PC's and they can be hidden under desks or behind panels. There no good for any graphics work, which are memory/CPU intense, this is where the desktop comes into its own, and also if you want a CD drive etc. Apart from that. There fine in my book. They can also be centrally managed and updates sent out across the whole estate. We even have them compatible with Server 2003 in AD. Hope this gives you an idea.
  15. We get approx double time for the first hour and time and a half for the rest. If it's after midnight it 22:00 aparently other expenses are taking into account, what they are, is unknown as i have never had to claim with my current employer to date. These i believe include time in Lieu, which is basiclly paid leave, either half a day, a day on top of your annaul leave entitlement. Hope this is of some help.
  16. We have kids who hold the door open for us here like, however they tend to let go just as your half way through with the new equipment! We get a couple of 'please' and 'thank you's', after a day or two passes without internet access! I can accept that there are good kids out, just they were senisble enough not to come to this school!. The thing is, the good kids are good because they dont attention seek and get there head down and get on with there work, but they are in the minority from my experience and the bad kids are heard and seen more than the others. Shame really.
  17. You could try for Network Development officer, if you dont mind me asking, roughly what scale are we talking about here, The nationwide scale covers roughly the details below: Scale 3 tends to cover Junior/assis technican Scale 4 tends to cover IT Technicians/ICT Officers Scale 5-6 teands to cover senior technicians/Senior ICT Officers Grade PO1 covers Network Development Officer (NDO) and technical/support analysts and Network managers PO3 - S01 covers Senior Technical/Support Analysts Hope this is of some help, it is a rough guide however, based on where i am working.
  18. Thats how we got around it too, using the classic start menu. Plus that is what we use throughout the whole of the LA as standard. The powers that be believe it is more professional.....even in a school! Anyway, it worked for us. Best of luck.
  19. Like they say, 'Every little helps'
  20. I use spiceworks as well, it has a lot of functionality not only as an inventory system but also as a call logging help desk as well. I have had minor problems, however these have been resolved the same day just by reading the FAQs, plus this was on an older version, these seem to have been resolved now. I also use Newt Freeware, this gives you everything in a spreadsheet format, such as OS, version, service packs, current logged on users, HADD, CPU speed, memory, and a host of other things, unlike Spiceworks this is just a simple App exe which you run and saves all the time setting up spiceworks. This is where I get NEWT from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/NEWT_d3181.html Hope this helps...
  21. We do similar things on a termly basis as mentioned above, however we tend to re-image the whole estate termly as appose to yearly. We have an estate of approx 400 desktops and 1000 laptops. The laptops get re-imaged as they come back for repair. However the desktops within the dedicated suites get imaged termly. We average 3 suites of 20 machines in one ay between 2 of us, once the pre-image updates etc have been completed. We have approx 5 dedicated suites of 30 machines and the rest are either small suites, with 10 or less machines or loan classrooms. We just stick a USB boot stick in each, have a ghost cast session set up and let them all connect. Sort
  22. Ideally you need a NAS with RAID capabilities, likely RAID 1, however this does require you to have two hard drives as raid one function by copy the data to both hard drives such as in the event of one failing you always have a real time back up. With Regards to actual hard ware recommendations, it does all depend upon your requirements, such as software or network NAS, I.E do you want to access it across the LAN by adding it like a network drive to your PC or software, where you have front end (This is usually used for the non technical foke) I personally wouldn’t suggest getting the software version, as there is usually less to tinker with and toys to play with the background etc, and usually less security. There are also a range of packages out there for NAS systems; if you get a NAS without software I would use FREENAS http://www.freenas.org/ This offers a technical front end with all kinds of extra functionality. Check out the website above. Hope this is of some help.
  23. You could also try Spice works, we have an in house devloped app and have a link up with the LEAs system, but this is what i have used in the past as it does a hell of a lot more than just a helpdesk facillity, asset management, inventory as well as remote management etc, best of all it's free and links up with AD. There's no harm in giving it a try. Hope this helps. http://www.spiceworks.com/
  24. 1. Cold peas aren't hot. 2. IT people have a life too. 3. Go out on a limb, that is where the fruit is. Or you could just use this website and adapt the 'Tip of the week' for your self. http://cis.tamu.edu/training/tips/index.php Hope this is of some help. Cheers,
