OK, my bad. I assume you are a 1:1 school. Absolutely. Some will learn given time, trial and error, some may never. Nonetheless I always provide best practice advices when training the teachers, heeding it or not is up to them. This is meant neither as a joke nor an insult. I think what you need is to deploy the click to run version using Office Deployment Tool. This is the version that will activate once signed in with a licensed account. Well what I'm recommending is to take a look at how the teachers have been using the notebooks. Do teachers drop a lot of large files in one page then distribute that page to their students? Do teachers ask students to upload files in the collaboration area during class? Under our usage pattern(teacher uploads/distributes almost everything well before lesson begins) we hardly saw any bandwidth spikes during lessons, because the content have already been downloaded to the students' clients via automatic sync. And we strongly advise teachers not to use the class notebooks to store large files shared with students.

Our teachers use the client version exclusively, more students use the web version because they don't really need that many features, still there're quite a few who use the client version. I think the content in these notebooks and usage patterns are more important factors here. Unless the teacher is continuously distributing content heavy pages during the class, I don't see how the client version could cause more bandwidth spike than the web version.

It is certainly doable to schedule a PowerShell script that sets a transport rule to activate and deactivate daily...

We have a lot more classes that are using class notebooks and we haven't seen that kind of surge in bandwidth. We do educate the teachers not to drop too many big files in their Class Notebook, especially the pages that they distribute to their students.

Haven't used Google in a while, but isn't this team drive equivalent to a team site doc lib in SharePoint?

We don't have a separate alumni tenant(if that's what you mean by 'specific alumni domain address'), alumni users continue to use the email accounts they were using in school so there's no migration needed. All we do is change their licenses to alumni, do address list separation(so that they can't search current staff/students email addresses any more). There're also mailing rules to control who can email to alumni mailing lists.

If you don't mind doing things the cloud way, why not use Office online instead of GAfE which certainly is not going to integrate as well?

THAT'S a totally different way of working. Even Office online which looks similar poses a big challenge for those who are used to the old ways.

Can't you use DISM to remove it from install.wim when you build the reference image?

It is free for schools and included within sharepoint online license I believe.

GAL separation can only stop students from looking up staff and distribution groups. It will not stop them from sending emails or adding calendar if they know the address. You can turn off Delve by turning off Office Graph in SharePoint I believe, but that's not recommended because it will break a lot of other things. Not sure why you want to disable Delve though, students won't see on Delve what they don't have permission to. For SharePoint you can turn off the Sites tile, and site owners can set site permission to allow only the people he/she wants to have access. As for groups? You've got to have some guidelines for creating those? Or if you want to disable group creation for some people it can be done using PowerShell. After removing the licenses, don't forget to enforce Office 365 sign in and block users without license in Yammer security settings.

I don't think they are going to move...but they will certainly improve the underlying SharePoint structure. There will be a SharePoint event on May 4th where we will be hearing some of those changes I suppose.

If you want to use SharePoint's collaborating abilities, you need to host your files there. What do you mean by 'mirror' actually. The amount of free storage you get on SharePoint is 1 TB + .5 GB per subscribed user. Check this

Sharepoint should not be a replacement for your file shares, and the last thing you want to do is to map document libraries as networked drives as a long term solution, it's not meant to be used that way. Plus I don't think moving to sharepoint will solve the problem(that the head has crappy internet at home)?
