@Bromcom_Darren What is the escalation procedure for this seemingly never ending situation? It would be nice to know what the root cause of these issues are, such as not enough of certain resources, a certain aspect is a weak link, etc. Can we get at least get a commitment from the execs of your company to invest in the resources and/or expertise in order to get on top and apply some long-term solutions to stop this from being such a frequent occurrence? I'm not just asking for myself, but on behalf of everyone else reading this, who is fed up with this not inexpensive solution not being able to meet expectations. It's clear that your team is not able to provide a consistent service or effectively fix the ongoing issues and I'm wondering if some form of refund for lack of service is something we can expect. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of schools or trusts migrated to Arbor when their contract with Bromcom expires.

Misuse of emails is dealt with on a behavioural level, though we do put measures in place to try and mitigate some issues. Such as we use GALs to separate staff and student recipient discovery, so students can't search for staff in the search box. However, it's not hard to figure out a staff email and they can (and sometimes required) to email staff.

Please upvote the "Invest in overall performance" idea, in Bromcom's ideas portal: https://ideas.bromcomcloud.com/ideas/BRCM-I-4431. Maybe also pass it round more people in your school/trust to upvote it.

Let me guess, no reason to the cause will be provided and nor will any commitment to resolving these long term, ongoing issues.

It took 25 minutes from the first reports to informing customers - that's also too slow imo. That's a surprise they've updated it - I absolutely do not believe that chart for uptime, at least the UK one anyway.

Would it not be easier to only deploy the software to the rooms you want it to be used?

These laptops don't provide codes. Well that's silly. I need to change the boot settings from legacy to EUFI & Secure Boot, but can't without the password that's been set.
-
Sadly I think these laptops are too old, as I don't get any codes. Three attempts, then an onscreen keyboard attempt, then a message "System locked. Press the power button to restart the system".

We have some old HP EliteBook 2570p laptops where BIOS passwords have been set, but we don't know what they are. It's likely we never set a password and a student has done it in the past, or as they were pre-owned, it was set by the previous owner. I have discovered that these are almost impossible to reset the BIOS password of, as removing the CMOS battery doesn't clear it (which I've tried). It used to be possible to contact HP, obtain a file that you loaded onto a USB, inserted into the laptop and you could then use a key combination at boot to clear the password...but HP stopped supplying those files years ago for security reasons. The only other method I've seen is to remove the BIOS chip that stores the password from the board, reprogramme it and solder it back on - this is not a task I am going to undertake for an 11 year old laptop. Does anyone know another way I can reset the BIOS password on these laptops, or am I just out of luck now?

I've been to BETT a couple of times and I'm going next week too, though I always feel too self conscious to go and get pizza though .

It's been a hot minute since I've looked at those settings in Teams, but I'm fairly certain we disabled the chat function to disable direct or group chats. As for chats within meetings, we specified that a lobby must be used when staff configure a meetings, meaning that users are dumped out of the meeting when it's ended. However, if the member of staff doesn't end the meeting, then users are left in and can still chat, which would then be unsupervised. At the time, this couldn't be specified as a default option, so it became policy when using Teams and those that failed to do it (and presumably got caught or found out) would be dealt with by normal school procedures.

We have 3x 24" 1440p monitors and it's improved our productivity.

If you can get a hostname from the MAC address from the switches or APs, that might be more reliable to identify a newer mobile device. In later versions of iOS and Android, private MAC addresses are on by default, which generate random MAC addresses and doesn't use the actual physical MAC of the device and it would make it difficult to find such a device with a private MAC.

NEWLINE LYRA TT-6521Q 65" 4K interactive Touchscreen
CHiLL replied to Talltree169's topic in Educational Software
We've just taken delivery of two of them, but they aren't getting fitted until Monday, so can't comment yet on their usage. We've bought them without a test unit, so sight unseen, pretty much because they're spec'd well and directed towards education. If they go well, we'll buy those instead of the BenQ's we've been purchasing for future replacements. -
We've been using a UPC UPS for many years now and it's been pretty decent. We've had to replace the batteries and the config side of it isn't exactly straightforward, but it does it's job. The only issue I have with this model is I cannot get the time to stay correct. No matter what I do, sync it to various time servers, set it manually, specify DST...the time will drift, often by days. I've also heard good things about Eaton's UPS devices.

I don't think it's just limited to you or hosted filters. We see a lot of IPs attempting to access on our on-site firewall/filter. There's probably no point blocking IPs on an individual level. If the attempt is being blocked/dropped, then at least the firewall is doing it's job. You'd probably be best ensuring that your rules/policies are all tightened up, and only allow the specific ports, destinations, etc you need and don't allow any others that aren't needed (not specified = no access by default).

RM Internet Price Increase
CHiLL replied to AverageMuggle's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
They also shut down their Consortium arm recently, which doesn't bode well. We were with RM some years ago and despite using the same Virgin line, they couldn't come close to the price offered by Virgin directly. With their pricing model as it was then, I wouldn't consider them now, especially when you have the likes of Wave9 (who we are with), offering very competitive pricing and excellent support to boot. -
Oh look, another morning and more issues, slow loading, search doesn't work when it eventually loads and receiving this error.
-
Oh yeah, a minor incident when multiple schools aren't able to access it.
-
It's slow/not loading for us too and we're unable to do registers. Who'd have thought, first proper day back and Bromcom issues/slowness. It's almost like it's predictable...

We've got a few BenQ RE75 and RM75 models around, though they've now discontinued the mid-range RM series. We've had a demo unit of a Newline 75" TV, which looked pretty promising. It's slightly cheaper (or there or thereabouts) than the RM RE series and includes built-in Wi-Fi and physical buttons on the TV, which the BenQ doesn't have and runs a newer version of Android. Like BenQ, they seem to be targeting the development towards education, in terms of features, apps and support (including training).

We've got about 15 of those Xerox VersaLink C405 printers and not had any issues deploying drivers. It was all configured by our managed print provider, but as far as I'm aware, it was just install the drivers onto the server, configure the GPOs and that was it. We are deploying the "Xerox GPD PCL6 V5.810.8.0" drivers according to our print server, in "Type 3 - User Mode".
