Out of curiosity how are you mapping the printers in your login scripts? Are you using the PrintUIEntry method?

I'm thinking about reverting to scripts or something similar. Its so unpredictable - brand new ICT Suite with 30 computers in (identical hardware and image) - 30 students login (identical policy settings) and 24 got the printer, 2 got the printer after 10 minutes and the other 4 had to logoff and back to see the printers. Its really annoying, and I feel for the teachers in the rooms, but as ICT support we're stuck with this POS until MS rewrite 10 again.

I still have the same issue and gave up trying to fix it, I can do it when using GPMC on Server 2016 though, but the apps list isn't the same as W10!

I for one will be moving from Edu to LTSB 2019 next year - looking forward to ditching the crap that comes with the so called 'Education' version, which is 100% designed for 1:1 Home users.

It’s not so much the security risk, as mentioned we’ve all got permissions etc in place to protect folders, but it’s the fact I set a group policy (which has worked since xp) that is obeyed by explorer only in certain circumstances. To me that indicates a broken or flawed system. If I set a policy setting I want the bloody thing to be enforced, not pick and choose by cortana!

When I disabled SearchUI.exe, or renamed the cortana systemapps folder, it rendered the Start Menu completely unusable (greyed out icons)? How did you go about this?

Oh yes, I've got NTFS permissions and share permissions and Access Based Enumeration enabled, but it shows that W10 isn't a coherent OS - MS bludgeon'd cortana into the OS so it cannot be removed. If you disable it (by renaming the folder in SystemApps) then it works - by killing the start menu completely. It ironic that if you type \\server\share into file explorer its blocked, but type that in the Start Menu - it opens...in file explorer. My concern is we have licensed network software on some of these shares - nothing to stop them copying that off to their google drive now is there? Marking them as hidden doesn't work as they can unhide them (and you can't remove that either!) Looks like LTSB2019 is our next rollout, either that or we seriously look down the line of ditching windows for good. We used to use CSM and it worked brilliantly - so the new version might be another option

I can't believe they rolled out an OS which allows you to block browsing UNC paths or drive letters, but their crappy cortana Type to Search overrides everything, allowing students to browse the mapped drives, any network share they like! Its a mess - it doesn't even follow its own policy settings. And being W10, if you kill cortana from running, the start menu doesn't work at all. Genius. How are you guys dealing with this in your W10 setups?

Does anyone have faith in what the changelog says these days! I gave up reading it a few releases ago

I think if we could get updates, printing and less start menu issues I would be happier as the login and boot times have been better. But things like the run from type to search make me worry what I’m missing in W10 as it seems to provide more worries than 7 did. And every updates fixes 10 things and breaks 10 more...

We started with a stripped out (i.e remove the crud apps) W10 Edu from scratch and have always used local profiles, which are purged when they haven't been used for 8 weeks. Initial login times are 30-60 seconds depending on the age of the PCs (all SSD based) and around 8-15 seconds once they have a profile.

I've been working with the broken W10 printing environment for over a year now and although using preferences and item level targeting has had the best results its still unreliable. It's also very inconsistent, as many users will login and not see their printer in the Printers control panel app (in either of the control panels!) but it will appear in Word or Chrome for example!

I feel your pain,we're fully on W10 and I wish I'd held back and waited for LTSB 2019. Generally we've got a lot of things working, but updates, printers and start menus cause daily headaches. Plus I'm sick of finding inconsistencies and new problems (like the one I've been looking at recently where all users can browse hidden network shares/drives and even run control panel apps through that damned 'type to search' start menu/cortana) I know a lot of people like W10, but I've been in the IT game since my COBOL days, and I've never seen an OS that is like this, it really is a botched up version of Vista! Theres a few people on here who say they've had few problems, but I've found our desktop related issues have shot up since moving from W7. And its not just at work, I helped a relative buy a nice shiny SSD based nippy i5 laptop - 6 hours to get the stupid updates on before the thing ran normally, as the updates pushed the CPU to 99% continuously - I've now ditched my home W10 and moved to a macbook, something I never would have considered 2-3 years ago. Microsoft lost the way with 8 and W10 was a mashed up attempt to get back to the popularity of Xp/W7.

I've found the usual double standard error in Windows 10 - we disable browsing of network mapped folders (used for applications etc) in Explorer, but if you simply press the Start button, or use the Search and type the mapped drive letter (i.e h:) it will open the drive up for browsing! Completely ignoring the group policy settings that prevents explorer from browsing that drive. Obviously permissions are applied to the folders, but its this sort of stuff that makes me think 10 still isn't reliable for GPOs - i.e you set it in one place and W10 simply ignores it somewhere else... Just realised this also applies for UNC paths as well, so they can browse any server share they can find (permissions allowing of course) but whats the point of implementing GPOs when the 'type to search' overrides and ignores all of them! Has anyone tried disabling cortana by renaming the folder in the SystemApps? It seems to kill the start menu (its all greyed out) - I'm sick of all this modern apps crap now as its nothing but problems.

This is weird - if I run this directly in a command prompt I get 'Return Code=0' in the log file which I guess means its worked: "\\server\Adobe CS6 2018\Adobe CS6 Serialise\Serialise\AdobeSerialization.exe" –-tool=VolumeSerialize –-provfile="\\server\Adobe CS6 2018\Adobe CS6 Serialise\Serialise\prov.xml" > "\\server\Adobe CS6 2018\Adobe CS6 Serialise\Serialise\log.txt" However if I paste that into a batch file and run that I get 'Return Code=1' and it displays the Usage list (I can see this if I run the batch file from the command line) Have I got the syntax wrong somewhere along the line here?

No impero, but I'll try running it as a batch file on startup to see if it sorts it before the users log in

We've got a base image with CS6 on it - since deploying it with a new W10 image users are always prompted to 'Sign In' when they first run any of the applications (not CC just local apps)I've tried the Adobe Licensing Fix Tool, and also created a Serialize package with AAMEE but neither have worked, is this a sign I'll have to reinstall every single one? (about 50!)

Its odd, being in the North East I'm used to spending 11.5 months of the year trying to stay warm, now can't sleep because its too muggy! We've had a brief thunderstorm today but only 30 minutes or so and the rain wasn't that heavy.

I prefer Tesco to our local Aldi, but the most distant Aldi is a much nicer shop!I was disappointed when Tesco pulled back all their other retail areas, as I was set to buy a ton of Hudl2's as they were ideal for education!

It happens on the older 4.4.9 and 5.5.3 - it just seems to affect certain PCs. Most are running 5.5.3 and like you, we've found this stable and reliable on most kit.

We use Airserver to mirror ipads onto projectors and it generally works well. However we bought another 10 licences and have an issue where none of the ipads will connect to these PCs. We only use Airplay, and don't need broadcast enabled as we use the Scan QR code option - and this is currently working well on all vlan segments of our network. It doesn't work on the latest installs but they are all the same hardware (Zoostorm) despite the OS being identical to the working ones (W10 1703) - it just comes up with the connection failed error immediately after scanning the qr code.To test we swapped a failing one with a working one, and the fault followed, and the working one continued to work, which eliminates the networking side - so it looks like possibly software related. When we've checked they're all using the same version of Airserver, W10 and the NIC driver, and even more weirdly we have a few of the 'dodgy' PCs working fine with Airserver in another area of the school! So this suggests to me a missing/broken update, or something very specific but I've run out of things to try - anyone else had this kind of issue?

I'm trying to import some GPOs from a Server 2008 backup to a new Server 2016 - most are working when I create a new GPO and then Import Settings from the backup of the old GPOs.However on a couple (naturally the largest and most important GPOs!) I get the error 'The library, drive or media pool is empty' when trying to import. If I try to view the settings before I get the error 'A unknown error occurred while the HTML report was being created'Neither of those errors tells me anything, and quick search on the first error only seems to bring up file copy related errors - anyone got any idea what on earth these mean?

I've used Uno for a few years - which seems to work with BT fibre enabled cabinets even though you can opt for a BT or TalkTalk wholesale packages. They offer a minimum speed guarantee as well so worth a look. As a ballpark I pay £31.something a month for up to 80Mbps unlimited and I'm in a tonky little village!I'd recommend them for customer service, especially after the awful experiences I've had in the past with BT and Vodafone.
