Bear in mind - and RCD or RCBO will have a rating for leakage, normally in houses of 30mA. This is the current imbalance between live and neutral that MUST trip the breaker. It may well trip at a lower level. In your laptop PSU there will be filters to keep nasty harmonics off the supply, and these, by design, leak to earth. Your first cable may be faulty in that the earth resistance is high, it will still work, but may not cause tripping.

This isn't the straightforward win it first appears. Around here, there are several country piles that have been converted into business parks (and indeed IBMs research labs). These do encourage business out of the cities; but the roads are not designed to cope with the traffic, and there is ****-all public transport serving them. Maybe moving out of the BIG cities, to large towns would work...

I think the train companies would argue that they halve the cost 'off-peak' to encourage those that don't have to travel at peak times to use the under-utilised stock. Train ticket prices do need sorting though. By picking specific trains, and booking ahead, I paid £16 for a return to London. The train up was practically empty, but I'd have paid £40 if I'd just walked up to the station...

This. Flying to Italy, would rather go by train, but not at 3x the price. Hassle levels are about equal. Train possibly slightly easier due to ridiculous o'clock flight.
