I can vouch for the value of being a governor I was a Staff one at my last job and found it very rewarding and an interesting experience and was involved in a range of things with them including a major refurbishment of the buildings, merger of two other local schools into ours, and the appointment of a new head.

Is the name they connect to in Trusted Sites? EG if its remote.school.la.sch.uk is that a Trusted Site? Note that is Trusted Site not Local Intranet site they work differently and in newer version of IE it creates problems if its in the wrong group. Some stuff that used to work in Trusted when it was an Intranet site no longer reliably works so is better as a Local Intranet site and the other way around.

You can roll reg changes out via GPO would that not help you? As for your issue if its students you must have some permissions wrong somewhere, the group you say is causing this if it just has staff in it makes little sense if its students doing it unless the student has got in the staff group ?
