I have set up a ubuntu server box with squid, and dansguardian, webmin and the dansguardian plugin for webmin. we have difrent lists for difrent sets of users staff students admin. and it authenitcates via ident which we have deployed through GPO. there is also a script wich i think is on the dansguardian homepage to copy a list of specific users, we copy admin and staff as students are in the lower group so if some one brings anything in and connects they are automaticly filterd as students. and it can be set up transparently so no setings in each machine have to be specifyed if you so wished.

theres a free version of smothwall or i use a custom setup of dansguardian on a ubuntu server

in AD on right clicking the machines theres an option to reset the computer account does this help or not. and is it repetadly doing this or is it sorted once its rejoined ? there was one day we had to run round the school doing it will all machines (re joining) but that was down to a server issue we had faures on the hdd and lost entire sections of AD.

Phone the companies and Inform them that you have bought the property on (DATE) and no such person lives there. i know companies that will not subject you to dept recovery if you were not ther person that genorated it but only if you inform them. like with the pay for use meters (Electric & Gas) you shuld allways ring to make shure your not paying extra for some one elses dept after buying a property. but as synaesthesia says you shuld try not to open mail sent to anyone but you.

Collobos Software works with windows great i use it at home and theres a 6-7 day trial and its only £6-£7 i tryed the free versions and as yet they dont support the new ios as dont alot of the free apple intergration ap such as the one for AirPlay in WMC any way hope this helps.

the universaty i went to used to fully cable the cabinets so that if an update or msi came out it could be done over a wired connection in the cabinet before going on the wi-fi and while charging. i dont know how they handeld it with the lids being closed and keeping tempritures regulated etc. but it might be something to look into.. a Quick search on my faverate serch provider google. Laptop Security Cabinets and Trolleys i know you wont want to buy new cabinets but you may be able to adapt the ones you have. E.G. Puting a wired switch in the bottem and a fan say for cooling. just an idea. but richard is right abought the wi-fi use the fastest switch and AP you can use the same ssid and encription and space them out to channels 1,3,5,7,9,11. or 2,4,6,8,10,12 and keep them to 20MHz chanels (radio bandwith) not 40Mhz as 2 AP's Will swamp everything with overlap, wich slows connections down to next to nothing. you can reuse chanels but only when fully out of range of other AP's. and if your msi's are all stored one a machine not used for any other purpose you could put it on the other side of a linux box and throtle the bandwith to and from the server via iptables or firehol but only if thats all it is serving (could include win updates[WSUS]) and thats the only way i can think of of slowing downloads, at least from the top of my head.(this sugestion is Not recomended as it may break things)

if underground they would overheat causing further restance and more repair work. and theyd have to pay to dig them up all of the time as well as cool the things. and there then not as accessable

this might sound daft but where do you plug the power in?

i built a system using an atom mother board i bought with memory in the only thing i had to add was the hdd, o/s and power pack. i bought 3 and stacked them ontop of each other with threded bar as the mounting holes lined up. 2 run microsoft server and one ubuntu server. the great thing is there dual core at 2.5 ghz "from memory might be wrong" and suposadly 64 bit instruction set ovusly it depends on the one you buy but its worth checking to see which atom mother boards you can buy as mine are abought 12 months old

AP's can only hold a set number of concurent users at any one time this can depend on the AP, due to chipsets, processor and memory etc. if the AP cannot handle them all there probably not be any errors on the server but there may be usefull logs on the laptops. and they will probably apear to be connected even if data is not going up and down. just a sugestion but try loging 10-15 on or stagger the logins and see if you get errors if you do try a few less or try spliting the group between 2 APs if you have them just to test. it could also be signal strength or interferance. and once a profile is messed up on win 7 you do need to recreate it ive had that issue but it was caused by deleting user profiles from a computer, as you used to be able to in XP. just a thought are you having any of these issues on your wired network. if not i would be verry strongly suspisious of the AP or wether you are overloading the connections to it. a firmware update may help the issue slightly. you could try telling the machines to wait for domain and wait for group policy. if it turns out to be signal related wich it dosent sound to be a higer gain antena say + 7dbi might help.

check machine - user permissions but it sounds like a network issue. are all 20 loging in via the same AP if so that could be the issue if so you could install another AP at the other side of the room for example. but AP's can bug out if to many machines are trying to connect espechaly if all at once.

this is just a sugestion but it may be worth checking that non of the used vga pins are touching each other or not making contact due to damage i had it where some on tryed to plug the cable in upside down and broke the connector on a 40M length. faling that test all the signaling wires and finaly use the origanal wires with a monitor for example to see if that does the same thing but it definatly seems like a cable/signal fault to me.

yes but if you have a vmmachine you can copy it and then set up the new system on the copied machine, or set up vmware and set up the machines then run them through vmware player once the trial has expired, i would also create a blank vmmachine for use after it expires.

you can download vmware player from there website you will need to sign up but you can get a 64 bit version. the vmware player is free also they can provide 30 day trials of vmware they are what i used while i was at uni.

try an rsop.msc on one of the machines and it will inform you of all the polices aplyed and errors aplying some GPO's if you do a gpresult it will tell you which haven't been aplyed and why hope this helps. Gpresult will also say if wmi filters are blocking policys aplying

We currently and have been doing for some time been filtering with dansgurdian and squid throu ubuntu works verry well i must admit and it also scans files and pages for viruses using clamav, and sets difrent filter groups for each set of users and grabs them from AD once a day. its also set transparently so no settings have to be enterd into any clients. and they dont see it unless they hit a blocked site when its splash screen is displayed with user name and reason why. i also like the abilaty to be able to search through the pages users have been on by date time username computer name ip etc. verry usefull and help full.

are other machines able to gain acces to the splash screen and if so it may be worth reinstalling the browsers on the machines. or trying a difrent browser perhaps. you could probably test the browsers by pluging them into the network via a cable it might point you in the right direction as to what is wrong if nothing else.
