So one of our support staff users her own laptop in school which is no problem with outlook on. she is using her .ntlworld address to email people. With this address in school she can email fine except to hotmail addresses and she gets this bounce back error This is the mail system at host know-smtprelay-11-imp. I am sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. The message is attached below. The remote mail system said: SC-001 (COL004-MC1F37) Unfortunately, messages from **.***.**.** weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list. You can also refer your provider to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors. But at home this works fine. If she used Gmail in school to email a hotmail address this works fine to. Im guessing its not smoothwall that is blocking this, would it be BT who provide our schools internet thats causing this?

Ideally I'm looking for someone that I can bounce ideas off on a new project I'm doing while learning. I'm thinking that the project will be in RoR and probably isn't to difficult. I would consider using other languages if you can say why that is better. Problem is: Need a website with a Time dependent links that allow limited number of users to enter/alter details in a form. This information then needs to be added to the other 8 forms from the other users in the link to become a csv file and emailed to another user. I'm looking to do all/most of the coding and just want the other person to suggest the best way of doing it or helping out if I get stuck, bit like a mentor. Can anyone help? Cheers

[RANT] I hate Microsoft!!!!! whys nothing simple with them one of our surface pro 3 is just doing a cycle reboot, I tried doing the restore option ( which worked on the others) But this one keeps getting stuck and restarting. So it looks like I need a Recovery Image... Microsoft website has instructions for this, go in select device enter serial number but then NO its a enterprise hardware you cant have the device image this way contact business support. Phone up Business support, talk to a lady who takes the details and passes me on to surface support tell him the problem oh you need to be through to Surface business support ill transfer you. Back to the lady again who wants all my details AGAIN ( is it conected to a domain or standalone) neither since its not booting up to be told that there is no direct lines to business support and i would have to go to support.microsoft.com/OAS to book a return call. There is no where that I can see to book a call just a list of numbers and a uk one which is the one I called earlier. Any one have a secret number? Or can I make a recovery image from another surface pro 3? how will this affect the windows licencing as theres no key on the back of the machines?

AUP for Guests, Parents , Visitors etc?
MattDLEA replied to MattDLEA's topic in Learning Network Manager
Thank you -
Does anyone have a copy of a AUP that they use for the above. So not really Staff but more for people that come in to do evening classes (both teach and attend) or occasional visitors. Ones that don't have a name as a username but log in under a generic account? Or how do you go about None School personnel on the network?

This has been troubling me for a while. I have a degree in ICT but no formal M$ qualifications. I'm torn at the moment I work for myself so noone is interested in the qualification, the schools are confident that I can look after the network and everything. However I'm aware that if I was to look at maybe becoming employed again then certs help you get past the HR stage of the application process. The other problem is I still don't know what I really want to be... SysAdmin pays the bills, but I like programming to so .

Is this offline files thing easy to do? Think it will be windows 7 Pro. I know Cloud would solve a lot of the issues but they dont want that. I need it to be as simple as possible. Even if there was a icon on the desktop that would run a script for say in school / out of school.

OK Just wondered how you guys would go about this. Following on from the other thread in BTRD. Current situation head has a networked PC at school, On there they have there own H drive access to the staff shared are and pupil shares etc these are a NAS box. They also has 2 laptops one thats there own personal one and a school one, they have then copied their documents from the network on to the laptops and an external HDD. They then gets in a Tizzy as the documents are out of sync everywhere. The last laptop I gave them I set up on the domain so in school just normal username and password so all network drives were available.I also added them as a local admin so that they could log on at home with a slightly different username and password, but with no access to the networked drives. The user isnt very technical. Im talking not using computer short cuts and clicking random things. So after talking to them again. They want - To get rid of there School PC and just use one device both at home and at a school ( so a laptop ) - The laptop must connect to the schools internet ( we use a proxy ) - Must connect to the schools printers - Must connect to the networked drives. - Must have there documents available at all times. - They DO NOT want to use cloud storage for their docs ( dont ask ) So my thoughts are:- 1. Get a new laptop that they are happy with. 2. Copy the contents of the External HDD to the laptop so that on the laptop is the new versions of all their docs. 3. Remove old PC from their room. 4. Tell them to only use that laptop. What would you then do about the printers network drives and backups? Im guessing backups I could use something like oakford and scedule it daily to do a folder on her HDD. How would you go about logging on at home and school? Thank you

Here's the deal. I have my own company that's just me. My background is web design with a bit of programming. Then I got into e-learning (Fronter) and creating on-line courses for students. After getting made redundant I set up on my own and look after a few primary schools and do some occasional websites. See the problem I have or I think I have is I can keep things ticking over nicely in a primary school, install a simple network and keep pc's running. Other stuff I would have to look up but feel confident in. But if you were to come to me and say hey set up a exchange server or SCCM or something like that I wouldnt have a clue without lots of Googling, even DNS issues confuse me. Same with the web design I could knock up websites for small businesses and schools etc wordpress/html/css. But anything more complicated then I would be found out. So at the moment I feel like I can do what I'm required to do. However I feel that I am slipping between the cracks and as my week is split in two half networks and the other half working from home / web. I don't know what to do. I have tried getting more schools but nothing came of that. Its knowing where to focus. At the moment I'm making ends meet and to be fair its not a bad income for the hours I work, but could just do to be doing more

So over half term we got LEA to move our SIMS from a desktop pc to a dedicated Server. They installed SIMS moved the database and got everything working. We have 6 PC's that use SIMS they are stand alone computers and not controlled by AD or anything like that. Forgive me as I no very little about SIMS, I tend to keep away from it as we have proper support contract for it. However we have been told about SOLUS 3, is needed for updates. I got a list or ports Is the but in red above needed as with out it it looks like that is blocked on the firewall I have done this on the server and the PC's. But when we are on the server and try adding an agent we get an install failed error ( Access denied to remote machine ) Tried the two different admin passwords for the pc's at a loss as to what it could be. We use Avast Business as Antivirus. The guy tried telnetting to the pc and that didnt work either. Any ideas?

Just wondering what people think about this? Is it better to specialise in one area, if so what would you recommend? or have a shallower knowledge of lots of things? Mainly thinking of career wise?

Thanks Joanne, Few questions I have been in to GP and unticked Grant user exclusive rights. I have a folder called studentdata then inside there is all the students . Is the studentdata the one I make Administrator the owner of? I would then click on each student name and give them ownership of there top folder? I got lost at the transverse folder permission can you explane that please? Also if i do this above will it break all students until i redo the permissions?
-
Right thanks all Just had a look at the GP all them folders are redirected and all have the Grant user Exclusive rights to folder. So what do I need to do
-
So if I go into students studata student name as an admin I can see Documents Downloads Favorites Music Pictures Videos Clicking on Documents I get a You currently don't have permission to access this folder If i right click properties then security I get You must have read permission to view the properties of this object click advance to continue .... then it wants me to take ownership of it?/

Sorry but I'm failing at everything today. We have a share created F:students Inside there is the homedrive for every student. The idea is that any teacher can see inside each students home drive so my documents ect to get there work. I have tried it as a teacher I can see the students home drive but once inside its empty. As an Admin I can see there My documents folders but again am denied access to them. Any ideas how to do this safely?
