It Looks like im going to have to add some policy definitions to our server to handle win 8.1 machines i need to be able to customise the start screen. I have been to microsoft site and downloaded the win8.1 server2012 msi. Run it and now have a directory with lots of .admx files and a folder with en-us containing adml files. If I copy these over into windows/policydefinitions on the 2008R2 server ( it asks if i want to update the files I already have ) I just cancelled it for now. If i replace the files that are there will it break the windows 7 machines?

What would stop .msi's been deployed via GP
MattDLEA replied to MattDLEA's topic in Windows Server 2008
rsop is picking up an error. Software installation did not complete install is pending and awaiting reboot. gp will attempt to apply the settings the next time the computer is restarted. -
Bit of a strange one I have a GP for our 2 simple install that contains about 20+msi's All assigned in the computer config software settings. GP is at domain level ( was lazy and didnt know better when I started) Security filtering I have Authenticated users. ran gpupdate / force a few times on local computer, logged on as domain admin restarted * 5 times still nothing deployed. This is on a windows 8.1 surface pro I have 2 simple on other surface pro's dont know why this one is different

Tried at home connected Access point to bt wifi router I get a green activity light but orange network light on the Access point and no ip address appears in the dhcp controller. Tried plugging it in to home pc got green activity light and green network light but could not connect on the default ip address
-
Just tried that says im not connected to a network when i try to get the the web page with that ip.
-
@dry do you have instructions for that? On laptop is it go to network settings > network connection > ip4 > then what would set the ip to 192.168.0.90 subnet to 255.255.255.0 and then DNS to 192.168.0.100 with the AP having a default AP of 192.168.0.100?

I had mine done @pcstru dont worry about it 9/10 people are out a few hours after the aesthetic has worn off. I had a overnight stay as my leg wouldn't wake up ( thats the other 1/10) I was running with in 6 weeks and did 2 half marathons with in 3 months of having it done

Just wondered if any of you have come across these access points freezing up. I have 3 that look to be bricked now. I have a green light for activity and network but nothing on power, 2.4 ,5 ghz pressed the reset button on them they look to have gone to there default ip 192.168.0.100 but I cant contact them and the managed switch says they are rebooting but there not even with a few power cycles. Any tips on how to get them back or are they gone Waiting for Netgear support to get back to me to

Sorry for sounding a bit stupid here. So say I do 2 in a RAID 1 and the rest in a RAID 6 or 10 id then install xenserver on the RAID 1 and then from there use the RAID 6/10 AS the storage for 2012 thats installed via Xenserver? Is that how it works?

I have 2 a HP SE316M1 Server from @ict-direct both have 8 x 300GB SAS drives in. I need to set up a RAID. For the sake of simplicity I am wanting to install xenserver and then have 2 virtual 2012r2s running on each server. Going to be DC /DNS / DHCP and file servers. Is it best to set up RAID in the hardware? What would be the best way to do this i.e what RAID should I use? I have only seen software RAID's before like on the buffallo station where you get an error message if a disk has failed, does this happen with hardware raids two, or how would I know if there was a problem? Cheers

Just filled in form

Ok Both DC's are down now but i can still log on? is this going to be a cached account?
-
So if the lease is a 10 days for example and all machines in the building were turned on on say day 1 and they all got an IP the DHCP server could be down for day 2-8 for example with no ill effects?
-
Thanks @SHimmer45 Slightly confused as the first server was handled DHCP. The secondary doesnt have that installed. So I'm guessing the best way is to have a main server that is the primary DC and DHCP and a secondary DC also with DHCP with conflict detection enabled?
-
S its all set up properly then It was just to test what would happen if a server went down. I can log on which I assume is the main reason of having a secondary DC
-
I have a test lab with a 2012r2 servers . One is called MAINSERVER which I set up as a DC. I have another called FILEServer which I have now promoted to a DC and added to the current domain. I have shutdown the MAINSERVER and got a virtual pc to log on to the domain. It takes slightly longer to log on then when the main server is up, but doing a nltest /dsgetdc:school.local I get DC: \\MainServer.school.local Address \\10.2.0.10 Both of which are details of the one that's turned off? Is this correct or should it come up with DC :FileServer Address:\\10.2.0.11 ?

Duplex mismatch and excessive late collisions
MattDLEA replied to MattDLEA's topic in Wired Networks
Had a look and changing the port on the switch setting to FD has cleared the error. Mulicast Filtering IGMP is turned off on all the switches. Spanning Tree is turned off on all the switches. ( Shouldnt this be turned on?) Also none of the times are correct? what would be the correct setting for the SNTP server? -
Forgive my ignorance with switches. I'm normally plug and play as everything has worked, but now im trying to get things to work better. I have web access to my core switch ProCurve 2810-24G and into it is plugged our Cisco 1941 router, ( we have no control over the router as its supplied by bt and the Grid) I have alerts coming up with half duplex mismatch and excessive late collisions on port 20 which is what the router was plugged into. I have quickly swapped it to port 22 which is the only free T(?) port we have left and the alerts have now moved over to that port. Port 20 and 22 is configured to auto. Any ideas?

Will post here does any of your LANRAngers just crash randomly for no reason?

Adding shortcuts to windows 8 desktop via gpp
MattDLEA replied to MattDLEA's topic in How do you do....it?
Brilliant @themightymrp Tried the shortcuts how I thought it should work and variations of it but no luck. Your way worked however -
Hi all, We have some surface pros that I'm installing office on. I need to create shortcuts on the desktops for all users. I have never done this before, normally use ranger but, not going to install Ranger on these machines. I have moved them all into a OU created a new GP gone to computer config > preferences > shortcuts > new Shortcut. Action:CREATE ? NAME:? Target object? Loaction:Desktop? What do I fill in the fields with? thanks
