We ran a PC build club last year. Made sure they understood ESD and H&S (first session). Second session enforced these concepts as they had a touch/feel session with components. More H&S for the third session as they had a master class from me in takeing a PC apart (including destroying heatsink and fan). Fourth session it was down to them in groups of 2 dismantling then re building. Once done it was partition and format followed by loading O/S. Worked well and one of the pupils did work expeerience with us this year and works with us on a wednesday afternoon. As long as you do a risk assesment and ensure that you follow H&S measures you will be fine. I actualy enjoyed doing it as the kids had an interest in computers. I wouldn't go as far as letting them bring their own PC's in though, another insurance kettle of fish.

Way to go indiegirl. If i were you i would get a peice of paper and list the pro's and con's of both jobs. What you like doing, dislike doing and what may be new and different in each role. The job with the most positive aspects should (i hope) be the one for you. Well done!

Thanks guys, the LART option seems best to me. Its the usual teacher thing. 20% have no problem with LM, the rest find any and every excuse under the sun to use it. It dosn't help that when you do a sims update it then wants to update LM. Think my next approach will be the cost of update + security issue's (ie leaveing machine logged on etc..)

Run either Sims.net or Lesson Monitor on win98 workstations? Need to put some old PC's in classes so that staff can do lesson monitor (even though they all have laptops but it ruins the start of their lesson if they have to flick lesson monitor on over their nice power point .........grrrrrrrrr) and all i've got is some celeron less than a gig processor with 128mb RAM and win98 os. Don't realy want to but a new OS for them.

Our head has a budget deficit this year so my replacement kit budget has gone - could have been worse it could have been my techie or me. Hope we get some NGFL because my win 98 workstations need skipping (in an environmental friendly way i hasten to add). Have done OK in past years though 2004/2005 - new win 2003 servers, 60 laptops in 2 mobile class rooms + 26 new desktops 2003/2004 - 30 new desktops for ICT suite + 26 laptops in mobile classroom, 40+ laptops for staff 2002/2003 - new admin server 10 + admin desktops, 40+ laptops for staff 2001/2002 - 26 laptops in 2 mobile classrooms + 10 desktops for staff Also included is flood cable on school site, some new switches and wirelss hotspots.

Touch wood we have had few technical problems. Just 5 workstations that failed at the end. Spoke to RM who advised restart PC then login to DPS as pupil, test loaded then finished and uploaded. Only other tech problem was a PC loosing it licence for charts! so the pupil couldn't create a chart in the database module. Had to load a batch file to create licence again for this machine. Now to the main problem - lack of support from head of ICT and SMT for the whole project. Have ended up doing all of the roles for the tests, not to happy about that. Will let the exams officer off as she is involved with GCSE's and SATS. Some test were a shambles with poor pupil behaviour etc..

Our head of ICT complained about mice not running smoothly in his room so i gave him a small screw driver - problem solved.

Reply from RM You would think that they would have thought of this because of legal reasons and the requirement to educate people with SEN at main stream schools. The accesability tool don't work with the DPS.

Anyone run a test with a pupil who is VI (visualy impaired). I have a pupil who uses MS Magnifier when on a PC but this dosn't run under the Test software. Any experience of this or clues out there before i phone RM

OK but useing ISA server 2003 and we don not currently use authentication as we had speed issue's (a job for the summer)

As a site we have always barred downloading from the internet to stop pupils from instaling games, filling the server with mp3's and doing other stuff we don't want them to do. But we now offer DIDA and the course leader wants his pupils to be able to donload video clips and then edit them with movie editing software. How would or do you handle this? As a stop gap we are modifying our GPO for the morning to facilitate downloading but a more robust class/room based system would be better. If we edited the GPO for the classroom contaner would this overide the user GPO? I did think about only allowing from named sites but the course leader quite rightly wants the pupils to find their own clips.

All our Teaching staff and a good number of other support staff have laptops. I started out with restricted access but found that staff would go on training programs when they needed to install software and could not and this caused some bother. We came up with a 'contract' that staff had to sign re software, home access etc.. and then opened up the gates to local admin rights. They know that we will ask for a laptop and check it for liceneced software, dodgy files and stuff. Touch wood but in the three years of staff freedome we have not had any major break of the trust. Just one learning mentor who always needed to format his hard drive prior to us collecting them for upgrades and a teacher who had a large amount of pop up porn. When they login to the admin domain we enforce microsoft updates and anti virus so are covered from that angle. Not had many virus attacks. The major problem i have with teachers is getting them to backup their data. Our head of Technology has just had his laptop stolen from home and quess what? he hasn't backed up any of his data to the network, CD or pen drive in months.

We once had to mop up a science lab when a pipe burst!!! Where were the caretakers you ask? About to have a fight on the playing fields over who's fault it was !!!!

anyone come accross this before? The heads laptop sits on a usb port replicator to which her printer is attached. When she docs her laptop it detects her printer and installs a copy of itself so she now has half a dozen of the same printer installed on her laptop. Can't figure out how to stop this happening and i've got better things to do (like install the KS3 ICT testing software) than spend all day looking at her bleedy laptop. Any help will be much appreciated.

If M35 is the postcode then the school is actualy not in Manchester but Oldham. That narrows it down to one school where the Network Manager was asked to leave recently and they are looking for someone who is more than the general run of the mill techie/NM. Could be wrong though. Oh and this school if it is the correct one is going to be totaly re built, starting this year so they will want someone in who can set up on a greenfield basis. As for the school, they are currently under my school in the LEA tables.
