Not sure how virtual processors work with Hyper-v so need a bit of advice please Server 2012 with 2 x E5-2620 cpu's. Task manager shows 12 cores and 24 logical processors. When setting up the virtual machines how many virtual processors have I got to play with? Is it 12 or 24? I understand I need to keep some cpu's back for the host. Thanks.

This school has a /24 subnet but as we have run out of addresses I've been given a new /23 subnet and told that we can still use the old addresses while we move over. What is the recommended method of changing scopes? The school closes in five weeks but I could really do with getting the scope moved before that as I'm very low on free addresses and more machines are on the way. The server has free NIC ports so could one be set to the new subnet so clients can see the server regardless of which subnet they are on or is it best to just hold fire and wait till the summer close down?

Is anyone else finding Openhive down?

I'm trying to source 30 good laptops. They want to be 15" screen, i3 cpu with a minimum of 4GB of memory and have SSD's. I've never done this but I've read that I can set the bios to wake up the laptop to install any updates. Not sure if this is really needed when using SSD's as the laptop will be quick anyway but it seems a good idea. I know the HP desktops we have here can do this but I don't know if it can be done with laptops they won't have access to WOL. Any ideas which models can be woken up like is? I've looked at the online stores and can't see any which have an SSD so that looks like a job for me before imaging them.

Never thought of using two dc's like that, but would I need it with just 85 clients? I use BackupAssist at another school and it's surprisingly good so bought it for this server. It's very lightweight and easy to use.

As the budget is going I'm counting myself lucky to get one new server and doing the install myself is saving (of the top of my head) best part of £2k. Like I said above it's only a small school and making the saving has allowed for a bigger spend on the server itself. We had the option of moving to Openhive email and asked other schools how they are finding it but received bad feedback so chose to go with our own Exchange as we have done so for many years. I've setup Exchange 2010 at another school and although it's not a five minute job I got there and learnt a lot in the process. For information I was quoted £1000 just to install the Exchange server alone. The only question I have with regard to Exchange now is which version to go with?

I know nothing about esxi but a fair amount about hyper-v.

After half term I'll be setting up a new server at one of my primary schools. It's a smallish school with about 220 pupils, 85 desktops and 82GB of data stored on the old server. It will be the only DC and run everything after the migration so file, print, sims, exchange and av. I'm planning to virtualize as much as I can if only for the disaster recovery side of things but I've been told different things by different people on how to configure the server so wanted to ask here. Plan A was to make the host the DC and file server and virtualize the separate roles into their own machines. I'm using datacentre so no problem on licencing. Plan B is to make the host standalone and virtualize the DC as well as a separate machine. I know Microsoft says not to run anything on a virtual host other than hyper-v so that backs up plan B but I would like to get other peoples thoughts on this please.

I've called prs back to confirm and was told youtube have their own blanket license so we don't have need one but if the videos were hosted on our own site we would so I'm very happy about that

I've been trying to get my head round music copyright today as the pupils have been making videos using photo story, added backing music and have now started uploading them to youtube. I understand the school needs a licence to use the music but which one? As I see you can get a ppl or pps licence to be covered for music and to make things worse youtube spotted some of the videos have used copyrighted music and says this clip may be blocked in some countries. I've spoken to prs and they pointed me to this page Limited Online Music Licences (LOML) but after reading other users plight when using music just paying prs £122 looks too easy and I could be heading for a fall.

No don't we don't have an on site proxy anymore since we ditched the ISA server a few years back. https is giving the same problem so I will take the videos home and upload them there. It really annoys me when things don't work as they should I've wasted hours on this today and like I said I'm sure it's a filter problem. I've tried uploading with IE9, chrome and firefox and they all do give the same error.

Thinking about it, using youtube is a great idea and as I'm working on a new joomla site I can use a joomla extension and open the videos in a lightbox. Only problem is getting them to upload to youtube as I've been plagued with errors all morning and I'll put money on the cause of the problem is the filter capita have in place.

I'm trying to upload a video to youtube and I'm signed in to the openhive portal with adult level filtering but each time I try to upload the video it times out with a message saying a security error has occurred. Has anyone had this?

That's plan B

I've dropped the frame size to 480 x 360, video bitrate 768 and audio bitrate to 120. I re-converted all the wmv's so now I'm down to 885MB on the website but because of the small video size they look dated. Think I'm going to ask Capita for more space.

The pupils have been making videos using photo story for the website but as they are wmv I want to convert them to mp4 so macs and android can open them as well. I’ve used handbrake and format factory to convert them but I’m getting mp4 sizes that are nearly 3 times that of wmv so a 7 minute wmv file at 24MB turns into a 65MB file. The frame size is 640 x 480 and dropping this to 320 x 240 makes little difference to the file size so now I’m starting to run low on hosting space. What are the best setting for online videos please?

One of my schools has it and it's pretty much fit and forget. The only time I've been involved with it is when the office wanted to buy more badge printing paper which Misco had for 60% of the cost Inventory wanted. If anyone knows how to print their own staff barcode lables please tell as I've been unsuccessful so far.

That did the job nicely thank you I did look there first but the page is awash with different extensions I didn't know which one to use.

I've got a number of .pdf files which I want to list on a joomla site but don't want to craft the page by hand. Is there an extension which I can use so I just supply the folder location and the extension will format the listing for me?

It was a fault on the empsn servers which host our site. It's working now but it took them days to fix.

Thanks guys. I've only got a few teacher laptops with Win8 and they logon using a local account so no need for the GP. I was thinking about the times when I use the laptop with a domain account but that's once in a blue moon anyway. Anyone know the reg key IE10 uses for it's proxy setting? I expect it's changed from IE9.

I've not got IE10 listed. Which files do I need to get access to the IE10 settings? Thanks.
