I've been getting reports that users are unable to hear sound when using the BBC iplayer but on further testing the problem is also on the BBC news videos too. The default sound playback device is set to use the speakers or monitor i.e. whatever is plugged to the rear green jack but the strange thing is other sites like Youtube or vimeo the sound plays correctly so with the sites I've checked it is only the BBC site that's affected. I can open 2 tabs in IE, 1 for BBC and 1 for Youtube and the YouTube tab will play through the speakers and the BBC tab will play through the PC's internal speakers. I've disabled the internal speakers in the BIOS so now the BBC tab still plays but I don't hear anything. We have a mixture of computers here and both HP 8200 and HP 4000 are affected but strangely the HP 7900 work fine. I'm sure the problem is with IE as when using Edge all sites play sounds just fine. At first I thought it was a profile issue but users with standard profiles are affected too.

It's a complete new system so new cables, new IP cameras and new DVR. I think going with a box would probably be the best way forward but not sure what type of connection would be best i.e. have faceplate inside box or crimp RJ45 plug directly on cable.

I'm glad I've found this thread as we are looking to install a new system over the summer too and have been recommended the Hikvision kit namely 16 X DS-2CD2135FWD-I(S) Hikvision Europe and the DS-7616NI-K2/16P DVR Hikvision Europe I've fitted the old analogue systems before but never an IP system so getting a little lost. From the Hikvision website it looks like the cameras have a RJ45 socket. Do I connect that to a network faceplate using a short patch lead or is there a better way to stop tampering? The website lists all sorts of wall adaptors. Can the cameras be mounted on walls as they are or do I need an adaptor? The DVR above has 16 ports. Can I take a cable directly from each camera to the DVR? Can these cameras be used externally? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks guys. As I was leaving yesterday I was told it had been decided to buy the kit so looks like I'm stuck with it, still, looking on the bright side the rechargeable batteries will come in handy.

We bought into Iris when it first came out and now the contract is about to end. We do not want to renew the contract owning to cost but Iris has said we can buy the kit for £400 or return it. The Iris kit is the older type with 2 ipods, 1 tracking mount, mic and tripods. The school still want to video the odd lesson so is there anyway to make use of the old kit without subscribing to the costly Iris service? I was thinking of something simple as the school doesn't need cloud video editing in fact I'm sure all they used Iris for was to record the lesson and watch it a couple of time before deleting it.

I'm looking to test upgrading a Windows 10 1607 VM to 1703 via WSUS but although I've approved the update or I thought I had nothing is coming through. The update I've approved is 'Feature update to Windows 10 Education, version 1703, en-gb'. Is this the correct upgrade please?

I've bought refurbished machines that were supposed to have been wiped but some still had data from the last owner, in fact they still booted to the logon screen.

I'm in the middle of setting up a new WSUS server running on server 2016 and looking at the Windows 10 versions under products I see there are a shed load of options which is confusing. We are a Windows 7 school apart from a few staff laptops which do not sync to the server anyway. I will be upgrading the admin machines to Windows 10 1703 education version over the summer and planning to upgrade the classrooms next year. Any pointers on which Windows 10 products to select would be appreciated.

Both of my schools are with Wave 9 and have found them very good.

I see SOLUS3 doesn't deploy the agent with SMB1 disabled but not a game changer in a small school as one could install the agent from a shared folder.

I've had to re-enable SMB1 as I was getting no end of problems as users could not logon, and those users who could logon because they had a local profile found their mapped drives had disappeared. It's odd as not all users were affected. Win 10 worked fine but I had mixed success with win 7. Some were ok (myself included) but others had problems even after enabling SMB2 on the servers so I'm guessing SMB2 cannot be enabled on the clients. Looking at my registry HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters SMB2 is nowhere to be seen. Does SMB2 get enabled by default on win7 machines?

I updated and removed SMB1 from the servers yesterday. All server are 2012r2 and today I'm getting some win7 clients not mapping drives and on testing \\\netlogon is not accessible but I can ping ok.

And did removing the spaces in the printer name solve the problem?

I'm using gpp user settings to add the printer and I can add printers ok using gpp. It's just the other printers I added using vbs that keep coming back.

Been trying different things most of the afternoon. I tried using GPP to delete all shared and ip printers in both user and computer policies but the printers are still there. When logged on as admin and deleting printers by hand after I have deleted the last printer they all come back again within 15 seconds.

With Windows 7 I used a vbs script to deploy printers and never had any problems with it. Now as we are starting to move to Windows 10 I'm finding the script is not reliable so have started playing with GPP but have found a strange problem which I cannot answer. I have a win10 vm and configured GPP to deploy one printer and as long as I give the machine time to settle before logging on GPP works. If I am too quick logging on after a restart GPP fails and no printers get installed. Right, the problem I'm having is I have a test user who has a super mandatory profile. I let GPP install the printer then I added a printer using the add a printer wizard. Now when I delete the printer I just added the printer comes back on the next restart even though the user has a super mandatory profile and their profile gets deleted on logoff. The machine must be remembering the printer but I cannot find out where?

Yes the firewall allows that. I changed the NTP server to google last night and I've not had any phone calls today so I'm guessing all is well.

Fool that I am I had removed the tick from the option to adjust for daylight saving time! I've changed the NTP server to google so I'll keep eye on it but it's puzzling why the time was 2 days out of sync.

Yes it was using uk.pool.ntp.org before I changed it to pool.ntp.org Think I'll try @Arthur suggestion of using Googles time service and see how it goes. Note. I found that disabling the time service on the DC means drives will not map.

Came in school this morning to be told nothing was working. This problem I tracked down to the time on one of the DCs was 2 days out. Everything was ok yesterday so this was odd. The event log on the DC showed this I changed the time and all was well again but just to be sure I changed the NTP pool address to pool.ntp.org is stated here pool.ntp.org: NTP Servers in United Kingdom, uk.pool.ntp.org Checking the DC again before I went home the time was an hour out so I restarted the time service on the DC but nothing changed so had to manually change it. This got me thinking so I restarted the time service again and within seconds the DCs time went an hour out. I've disabled the service for now but I need to get this fixed. All the VMs including the DCs are set to not sync with the host. Running w32tm /query /peers on the DC gives this: #Peers: 1 Peer: pool.ntp.org State: Active Time Remaining: 62.3096060s Mode: 1 (Symmetric Active) Stratum: 2 (secondary reference - syncd by (S)NTP) PeerPoll Interval: 15 (32768s) HostPoll Interval: 6 (64s) Looking at the logs again I see a number of event ID 1 from when I changed the time this morning to 16.22 when the time changed by an hour. Further to this I want to create a KMS host for activating Office 2016 and Windows 10 and the host will be running on server 2016 which has been activated using a MAK key. I already have the KMS keys from MS. How would I go about this please?

Thanks all. Looking at the Kent safety site this caught my eye and answered my question. So of course it depends on pupil age and size of school, but if your filter has good reporting then no, extra software is not mandatory.

I know there are a number of monitoring solutions out there and PCE is the least liked (and for good reason) but that said we use PCE because nothing can touch it on price. Just been given the renewal notice for PCE or Futures Cloud as it's called now and it says Is it really a requirement to have software that monitors safeguarding? I thought as long as there is adequate supervision, software is not required.
