The reason I haven't put the default user on the netlogon share is network traffic. It is much quicker to pull the default from the local drive than the network. Using robocopy it only copies the file if it's changed. I'm running office 2003 all over so i don't have that issue. You could create a few more OU's with different startup scripts pulling the correct profile from the network. Then just stick the correct machines in the right OU.

I've got a machine setup thats got all the software installed but not joined to the domain. I created a local user and setup the machine as i wanted. Then logout and login as the local administrator. You then should be able to copy the users profile out of the "c:\documents and settings folder". I renamed it to standard and copied it to the profile directory on the network. I didn't change any permissions. With Ranger the logon times are about 30secs on a fast machine.

Heres my setup:- I've created a users profile as I wanted. Make sure all the windows and office settings are correct. I did this on a machine thats not in the domain. Copied the folder from "c:\documents and settings" for the user I just setup onto the network. I made a folder in netlogon called profiles. Put this script into your machines startup script.(GPO) NET USE X: \\server\netlogon /persistent:no x:\delprof.exe /q /i x:\robocopy.exe x:\Profiles\Standard\ "c:\documents and settings\Default User" /MIR net use /delete * /y Make sure delprof and robocopy are in the netlogon folder. If you have a lot of profiles on the c drive, the first time you run this the machine will stick at running startup scripts for ages. Any changes you need to make to the user profile only has to be copied to one place. The machine will copy any changes when it reboots. There should be very little network traffic as robocopy is only checking for changes and the user aren't pulling down their profile when they log on. I use folder redirection for the desktop, start menu and home drives. This was posted by someone else, i've just tweaked it a bit.

I found a thread on here getting local profiles to work. I've set it up and the students don't have a roaming profile. Logins are now a lot faster. I've got a profile with all the application settings on a network share. A startup script copies them down to the default user directory on the local c drive.

Sounds like the clients are getting a default gateway with dhcp. Depending on your setup this might not be needed.

I've got the same setup on my 5140gl.(apart from multicast routing) I'm think of getting a 5412 for next year with 10gb uplinks to the edge switches (hopfully 2900's!) Have you done anything with your spanning tree setup?

I had to shutdown my servers overnight while some power work was carried out. This morning one of the scopes on dhcp refuses to give out an ip address. When I do an All Tasks - restart service I get the error "The specified service does not exist as an install service" Anybody seen this before? I'll try a reboot tonight.

Thats an intresting setup. Can you give more details how you have done it. I'm intrested in setting that up.

I've got more of a geographical vlan setup. I have a default vlan which is just for the switches. A server vlan and the rest are geographical areas. Each vlan has it's own ip address in different scopes. IP helper is set to the dhcp server ip on each vlan, so depending where you are in the building you get a different ip address.

What switches you using?

I've just vlan/subnetted my network off. Took a while but worth it. I assume the fibres go into the 2824? How many machines do you have on each physical segment? How are you going to join the networks together? Have you got dhcp running? The 2824 should do the routing for you. So you should be ok there. I'm not sure if it will make things any quicker. It depends on how many devices you are running.

I think AB tutor control does it. It will wake your machines up as well if they support WOL.

It's smartboard season here. Everybody wants one. Getting 14 fitted over summer. I do enjoy this time of year. Even with the strange requests you get from staff!

If you want gigabit to the desktop then you need cat5e. If not don't bother. It would be a waste of money.

I've got two two gpo's setup. One for the machines and one for the users. It's just a test network at the moment. I've got them setup just as you said.

I've done that. I set it up as suggested. I don't understand the the machine part is working but not the user settings.

I'm doing the same at the moment. Ranger is costing us a fortune which could be spent elsewhere.

Anybody using firefoxadm? I've got it working with the computer startup script but I carn't get the user/login part to work. I only want to set the default download location. I'm using the latest firefoxadm with firefox 2.0.0.3.
