Hi, KB2918614 Has been causing us problems as well. Haven't been able to install ANY software when logged in as network admin, Windows throws a 'The profile for the user is a temporary profile' message. Uninstalling KB2918614 fixes the issue

I haven't seen the user today but my iPhone is running ios 7.1.1 and it syncs with Exchange perfectly

Hi, yes I was aware of that one and made sure the setting was in AD. Like I say, her previous devices (iPhone 4, iPad) synced without isssue

Hi, I have a user who has an iPhone 4 & an iPad. Both are set to sync with our Exchange 2010 server and do so perfectly, no problems at all. The member of staff has now purchased an iPhone 5s, I've set up a link to her Exchange mailbox using exactly the same settings and the phone keeps saying it is unable to verify the connection... I've double/triple checked that her password is correct etc. I've gone on to the Exchange server & removed the partnership with her previous phone... but it hasn't made a difference.

Hi, We run VMware 4.1 (enterprise edition) on 4 hosts. We don't have a support contract (I couldn't persuade the finance dept to part with the money) We need to start building some Server 2012 VMs.... but 4.1 doesn't support 2012! We have a number of 2003 VMs that I need to upgrade over summer. One machine needs to be 2012 to run A new version of the Cashless Catering software system we use. I've just had a quote for an upgrade to the latest version and with the 'backdated support' and 're-instatement fee' it comes to over 8K!!! Is there any alternatives to this... even barmy alternatives. I need to look at everything. The 're-instatement fee' is over a grand... I don't think the powers that be are going to suck that up. I guess I could set up Server 2012 on a high spec desktop machine and upgrade my Server 2003 VMs to 2008... which might see us through to 2020? All opinions and ideas welcome!

What about using a free alternative such as GIMP? I'm not really a graphics expert but it seems pretty good and quite 'Photoshop-like'

I went to a Frog sales day last year. Looked like they had been doing a lot of development which surprised me. I think they managed to get a massive push into Malaysia (something like every school gave every child a Google tablet running Frog) & used the money to spruce it up / develop new features. It did look top notch but it costs. Too rich for us. I think Moodle meets our needs right now.

Ahhhh, mystery solved. The files that were causing me issues where in folders with massively long names! Nesting them inside another folder caused Windows some issues. By shortening the folder names a resolved the problem. When I say massively long, I mean MASSIVELY! More like a (long!) sentence than a filename...

Hi, on a server 2003 file server I've just asked to move a large amount of files into an archive folder. After doing this, some files have lost their security settings - in fact when I right click on the file and select 'properties' there is no security tab!! I can open the files without issue (I'm an admin) but other people can't. I've tried a number of things such as creating a new folder, applying fresh security settings to it and then copying the files into that... this has worked for the Word docs but strangely NOT for the Excel docs. Anyone got any ideas?

Is that 'Cycle to work' scheme still running? That's how I got my bike a few years back. I think it allows you to buy a bike with the VAT shaved off the price AND you pay it back in interest free monthly instalments. Type 'cyclescheme' into your favourite search engine & you should be able to find out about it. It might enable you to increase your budget. I don't know nothing about bikes, ended up getting a Cannondale hybrid. It's done good for me and is really light. I don't drive and bus fare here would cost me £4 a day so the bike saves me plenty £££££. My cycle route is 90% off road and it's GREAT!!! It's fun in winter and just ... relaxing in summer. Nothing like starting the day in a good mood.

We get our internet through the county & they provide two levels of filtering (actually it's RM kit) A layer at county level, which we have no involvement in and a filtering system that we manage. For monitoring we use Securus

School network. Mainly Server 2008 & Exchange 2010 & some 2003 machines (almost all of them are virtual Servers: VMWare). All clients Win 7. Lots of old kit. No money in the budget. Staff always complaining about network speed. I'm constantly looking for ways I can get a bit more out of the system. Just started playing with WireShark. Running it on my machine, I'm seeing a lot of LLMNR traffic coming from all over the network. From what I've read, I don't need LLMNR because I have DNS & I can turn it off with a GPO... a little (very little!) knowledge is a dangerous thing - anyone done this? Upsides? Downsides? Also seeing other traffic on the network that I think could be stopped, such as mDNS packets. No where near as much as the LLMNR traffic but still noticeable and we don't have any apple devices on the network. Again : I'm sure I can kill this with a GPO... Any advice or opinions would be welcome

This is a pain... but they are a business. Over the last couple of years I've met lots of people who use LogMeIn but I've only ever met one person who was paying for it. I think we will probably buy into it for a year but spend the next year looking for an alternative. At the moment with a 50% price reduction I can just about swing it with finance. I doubt I'll be able to do that next year when the price doubles.

Yeah... I think it's impossible, I just needed it confirming. It's not actually an issue as such, senior leadership are just looking at how secure our data is. I am a bit surprised that SIMs doesn't do this... I realise it'd generate a pretty HUGE log file that you'd probably never need to look at but I think parts of the NHS does this with their patient management systems... and it makes sense to do so. I don't think the Head will be pleased, especially given the cost of SIMs

Not quite sure what you are saying, perhaps I need to rephrase the question: If all teaching staff have read access to all student records Can I find out which teachers have accessed which records? (where no change has been made, they have just accessed the record)

This is just a guess but when I look at the intranet, traffic is being pushed straight through to the server. When I look at the website traffic is being pushed through the proxy server. Probably can be sorted with a DNS entry + host file change...

I inherited this server so it's a bit of a mystery to me. I have a number of sites (including a staff and student intranet) . Each site has a virtual host file containing this code: Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all As an experiment I stripped out both these directives and replaced them with: # Intranet settings Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from 123.456 This *should* restrict access to the intranet folder to only local network addresses. I'm not sure if it's working as it should but it's certainly not stopping anyone (on the local network) from accessing the site. If I drop almost the same settings into the web page virtual host file Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from 123.456 I get a 'Forbidden - You don't have permission to access /folderName/ on this server' when I try and access it from a local network address (beginning with 123.456) If I change 'allow from 123.456' to 'allow from all' - it lets me in. If there is an 'AllowOverride' somewhere else on my server that is stopping this from working, it doesn't make sense to me that I can toggle between 'everyone can access this folder' and 'no-one can access this folder' If I'm being dim here, let me know!
