Ah... I meant to look up grep but I got sidetracked - it looks exactly what I need to do. I can open a shell so that's no problem, at the moment I'm running: grep -rl "string" /path .... Hopefully it will find something My Ubuntu server is also hosting our website & intranet, both of which seem OK. Thanks for your help

Well, after looking at this all morning, I'm now more confused than ever. To recap: I'm running Moodle 1.9 on an Ubuntu server. When users log into Moodle, everything seems all right. However, when they 'Search Courses' , the returned page will look all right (hovering the mouse over all the links, I can see they are as they should be) but clicking on any link will take to one of these tupe of pages: unchallengedminimoogs.ru oomphstereomono.ru convertednextpages.ru I replaced my Moodle folder with a 'clean' version I renamed my current MoodleData folder and created a new one with three empty folders inside (cache, sessions, and temp) I then went to my Moodle site, logged in and checked the 'search courses' functionality - same problem with the nasty re-directs. I did an SQLdump of my database, opened it in a text editor and searched for any reference to the websites mentioned - found nothing. .... I really don't understand.... I agree with Steve, the most obvious culprit is a hacked htaccess file... but if it's not in either my Moodle or MoodleData folders.... where could it be?!

Hi, I used PHPMYADMIN to search the database In Ubuntu I searched for the htaccess files, right clicked on them and opened in a text editor I'll have a look at grep, thanks for the pointer

I'm running Moodle on an Ubuntu server. TBH, I don't know much about it, it was set up by a fella who left a while back and I've never had the time to sit down and get to grips with it.

Hi Steve, I'd be happy to let you see the Htaccess files, I really need to get to the bottom of this. When I've looked at the files, I've done a search 'RewriteCond' - I hoped that that this would get around the white text issue. Yes, I replaced the main Moodle folder so I presume, whatever is lurking in there has *got* to be in the MoodleData folder - am I right? Cheers for your help, much appreciated.

Hi Steve, thanks for that - how did you know I was from Clough Hall? OK, here's how it's looking. Moodle isn't something I know a lot about but it looks like there are three areas - the database, the course data & Moodle itself. I've searched the database for any mention of the dodgy web sites and it's clean. I've replaced the main Moodle folder with one that I know is clean and that didn't change anything. So I'm assuming it's in the data part where the courses are. We do back up the Moodle server but the problem wasn't reported for a few weeks.... It makes total sense that it's a htaccess file issue... but I've checked everyone of them and can't find anything! What could I be missing? I could be making some poor assumptions here so please feel free to correct me.

Hi, It looks like our Moodle has been hacked. When a user tries to find a course using 'Search Courses' , clicking on any of the links on the returned page will send them to somewhere random on the internet - mainly russian sites, such as: diskwarrioradvertisements.ru/Documentation?8 ** By Links, I mean ALL links on the page. Even to the users profile, logout etc. Moodle & php are not really my thing, so I'm in the dark here. I can see that the 'Search Courses' 'GO' button fires up courses/search.PHP & I've tried replacing this with another php file which I know is clean but it still does the same thing. Search.PHP has a couple of includes (config.php and lib.php) so I'll check them. I've also searched the database for the Russian site mentioned above but I can't find it, so I guess it must be hardcoded into a php script somewhere? Everything else works fine. You wouldn't know there was anything wrong unless you searched for a course. I'd like to solve this with a minimum of fuss & take measures to prevent it happening again. Researching on the internet is easy enough but it's not as good as seeing the things being used in anger; real teachers, real students and real technicians! Our problem is that we have to move to Windows 7 and due to not having any kind of upgrade policy, a lot of our 500 machines (all Dell) probably wont run Win 7 too good (I don't even think there are Win 7 drivers for a lot of them). Fat clients, at these numbers + Win 7 licenses... that would be a huge cost. We are looking at all options and pure RDP does seem cheap(er), I'm just weary that it might not meet all our needs, especially in the future. 'DO NOT jump without properly demoing and planning' = excellent advice!

Hi, thanks for your replies. We are still talking to a few companies, all of them suggesting different things - a pure RDP solution, an RDP/VDI hybrid, a pure VDI... I don't yet fully understand the ins and outs of it all as yet. I have concerns; we don't use a lot of software packages but things like movie maker can be heavily used at certain times of the year. Also our staff are prone to software fads, someone finds some software on the web (last year it was Photo Story) that they become enthusiastic about and before the day is out every member of staff wants to use it. I accept that thin clients might not always workable for some software (digital studios etc) but I need a solution that enables me to say 'yes' more than 'no' to staff requests (the Head hates it when I say no!) I'm really interested to know what other schools of a similar size have done, what solutions they have adopted, what kind of experiences they have had etc.

Hi, My school has 400+ Dell machines running XP. At least 80% of the machines are out of warranty. Many of them are 4+ years old. We have a couple of issues; we don't have the money to start replacing 100's of machines and if we were to move to Windows 7 I don't think all of our machines would be capable of running it. We are starting to look at Thin Client solutions. Initially using our old machines as thin client terminals, to save £££. All our servers are virtualised, we are running VMware and we have the capacity to add more servers. We've spoken to a few companies and we are being told different things regarding price, software and licensing. One guy, who we trust was assuring us that costs had dropped dramatically over the last couple of years. I seem to recall he was suggesting a Linux based solution. Unfortunately he has left the country to pursue his career. Ideally, we would like students and staff to be able to access a remote desktop from home. I don't expect anyone to wave a magic wand and drop a solution into my lap but I'm interested in your opinions and suggestions, especially from anyone who has had a tackle a problem of similar size. I'm running the Active Teach software on Windows 7 machines. I've been in touch with Pearson support and I've: 1) Installed the latest (correct!) audio drivers 2) Disabled 'Enable Audio Enhancements' option 3) Uninstalled Flash activeX and reinstalled I've still got random audio issues. I don't have audio issues with any other software apart from this language kit. I'm now going to have to swap the PC's in the language rooms for old XP boxes - nice! The MFL teacher wasn't best please when I told her 'XP wont last forever' !!! Anyone had any joy resolving this?

Thanks! I've just tried adding the trailing '/' and that didn't make any difference, I'll try the ProxyHTMLEnable tomorrow when I get into work. I don't have a great deal of experience with web servers but I can't help thinking the problem is with the ASPX code... Instead of opening a page directly, it's chucking a URL back at the proxy that doesn't contain the '/insight/' part so the Apache server thinks it's a local page that it can't find... hopefully I'll be proved wrong tomorrow! Ah, I may have an idea of what's going on... hopefully someone who knows a bit more than me can confirm if I'm on the right track... My test website is in a folder called TestRP, my reverse proxy pushes all traffic with the url http://mywebsite.com/TestRP through to this site on IIS6. This works, when I type http://mywebsite.com/TestRP in my browser it displays the TestRP test page and the url displayed in the browser remains http://mywebsite.com/TestRP My Insight website should work exactly the same but it falls over. When I type http://mywebsite.com/insight into my browser, I'm routed through to IIS6 correctly but the aspx page that it opens, returns a url that doesn't explicitly reference the folder (called insight) that it's sitting in. This url is passed to Apache that can no longer reverse proxy it and instead throws a 404 page not found error this is what is displayed in the address bar : http://mywebsite.com/secure.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f And the page displayed tells me Not Found : The requested URL /secure.aspx was not found on this server. OK folks, can anyone tell me if: A) I'm on the right track with this and... B) How to resolve the issue... without digging into someones ASP code! Cheers... and Happy New Year!

Hi all, hope someone is daft enough to be viewing these forums today! We have an Apache webserver sat on an Ubuntu machine, it's happily dishing out our website, Moodle, Intranet. The school wants me to test the 'Insight' SIMS interface software, this needs to run on an IIS webserver I've set up Insight and it works (locally) to make it available from our website I've set up a reverse proxy on Apache. The reverse proxy points to Insight and also a test website that contains one basic HTML page. When I test the test website, it works fine which means my reverse proxy is set up correctly (mod_proxy enabled etc) However it falls over when I try to access the Insight bit. What happens is the request from Apache to IIS for the Insight homepage (Secure.aspx) goes through correctly - this should return a login page... instead, whatever is passed back to Apache seems to cause it to look for a page internally and it throws a 404 error 'The requested URL /secure.aspx was not found on this server' I'm presuming the problem is something to do with aspx but I really don't have a clue! Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've been searching Google but I'm going nowhere fast Cheers... and Happy New Year!

Hi , I was getting the same message : "Invalid Firewall process image path or file not found: C:\Program files\MST Software\LanView 4 Client\ LV4Client.exe" Nowt to do with my Firewall, it was my anti-virus program (Symantec Endpoint Protection) that didn't like it... which does make sense! Got it sorted by adding the LV4Client.exe to the exceptions list and now the client installs just fine

Over the summer we virtualised our servers using vmware / vSphere The powers that be are happy to foot the bill for me to go on a vSphere training course, I was booked on a four day course starting next Tuesday. The company running it let me know yesterday afternoon that they have changed the dates and it's been put forward by a few months. Does anyone know, anyone have any experience, or anyone able to recommend any companies that run vSphere training? Cheers

I've got a few Dell Optiplex 745 USFF machines that wont start properly on a morning, during the boot up process they throw a 'Hard drive fan failure, press F1 to continue' message. I've had a look inside and the fan seems to be working fine. Anyone have any ideas at what might be causing this? Cheers!

Ah ha! We are running Symantec Endpoint Protection. Uninstalling this seems to resolve the problem. Looking on the web, it seems like I'm not the only one with this issue - now I've just got to find a solution!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I presume you mean the hard drive on the machine that the clients write the results files to? There are 15 or so client machines in the room. All of them have successfully completed a test at some point, equally most of them have had the 'Delayed write failed' issue... it's unlikely that all 15 client machines had hard drive issues. As said before; this room gets plenty of use and it's only this OCR test that seems to cause us problems.
