Yeah I would continue to backup, not to tapes to hard drives that I place into a dock, these are then swapped the following day and put into a fire proof safe in a locked room in another building. I backup to hard drives for 2 days and then on a Saturday I do a full backup to a separate NAS located in another building. But I was going to setup a backup solution to backup to on the days I am not here. If that makes sense.

I work at 2 schools, 2 days at one, and 3 at another. The school I work for 2 days, still uses hard drives to be swapped for backups and they are placed in a safe. But as I am only there two days, the backups are being done for 3 days. I have asked a member of admin to change them but she keeps forgetting and I don't want to put that on someone else as backups are so important. The backups are being sorted in the summer, with us moving to offsite backups with the other school. In the meantime I was thinking of setting up a backup server with 6 2tb drives in FreeNas and placing that at the other end of the school literally in a separate building to the server room (there is a leisure center between the other building and the building with the server room). I would backup to this for the time being. I think this would be the best option, but was wondering if anybody else has any other ideas that might work? I am currently backing up with Backup Exec for file server and Admin server, though we are in the process of moving to Arbor from SIMS which will help. Cheers

Is Sharepoint and Excel the best thing to use for Trust??
Theldron replied to Theldron's topic in How do you do....it?
PowerBi looks good mate, thanks for the recommendation, will have a look. Within Sharepoint though was wondering if I created a true dashboard, with links to the different docs. Word for the SEFs and Excel with the KPIs. I assume you can create links to other sharepoint documents within a document? -
Hi all, I have been promoted and I am now working for the Trust that my old school is a part of. The Trust has just been formed, there are currently 3 schools. They have an Excel online document, that is stored on Sharepoint and holds the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) and SEF (Self-Evaluation Form), that all 3 schools have to fill in and is then shared with the Trustees at quarterly meetings. It also has a small dashboard that summaries the Key aspects of the information. I have been tasked with looking to see if this IS the best way of doing it as they have been experiencing problems. Data going missing, the excel doc being locked etc. The Excel document being locked I believe was probably somebody using an older version of Excel...... They need to enter a lot of written information into the SEF, as well as data for the KPI and get it all analysed. I know Excel isn't the best place to enter a lot of written information. Can anyone recommend an alternative to this? Was wondering if using Word for the SEF and Excel for the KPI and hyperlinking in a main document, would be better? Any ideas or recommendation would be appreciated. Cheers

I wouldn't mind a refurbished laptop at all. What are people's opinions on refurbished IT equipment vs New? I brought a PC for work from ICT Direct and it has been brilliant.

Hi all, Looking for a new laptop as my 6 year old HP is giving up the ghost. I have a budget of around £400 looking at a 14"/15.6", only using it for browsing, netflix/youtube, writing etc. Have seen a couple but wondered if anyone had any recommendations? Like Lenovo and HP, try to avoid Acer (bad experiences), but happy to look at other makes. Cheers

Hi all, Been quite at work the last couple of days and though I have things to do would like to start off learning some coding. I would like to look at Powershell and Python, but I know in my day to day job as a Windows admin would be better off starting with Powershell. Can anyone recommend a good online (free preferably) Powershell course? Cheers

I have begun to look after the IT at a Utc that is part of the trust I work for. We have a HP Virtualstorage SAN that has gone down twice due to the raid controller failing. This has happened twice in 9 months. I think there has to be a fault but convincing HP of that might be another matter. The Utc has 2 core switches for resilience, 2 hyper-vs for resilience but only 1SAN. I know they are expensivr but what do other schools do, do you just have 1 SAN or do you go for total resilience and get 2?

It is the Makerbot V3.0 that I have installed. Though it does install to Program Files, when it is run it creates a folder with a user.config file in the appdata\roaming folder. This controls whether a user see's the sign-in box etc. It's this I am having trouble with as it is not creating the user.config file for standard users. Cheers

I have installed Makerbot Print. I downloaded it from their website yesterday (10-05-2018).

Hi all, I am now helping out at a college and they have Makerbot 3D Printer. I have installed Makerbot through admin account, but was having issues with the sign in box. Found the post regarding this with the batch file and got it sorted (Thanks @Fraserb82). I got the D&T Technician to sign in as they will be the person using it, but it just keeps coming up with the signin box. I checked the Appdata\Roaming but no Makerbot folder is being created in there for that user. I tried giving the user temp admin privileges, no go! When I run the program as me (Run as administrator and enter my credentials), it runs fine, this is I assume because it is running through my profile. Context - the college uses local profiles. I tried to move the Markerbot installation but I just get an error. Any ideas would be appreciated? Cheers

OneDrive On Demand - This operation has been cancelled
Theldron replied to Theldron's topic in Cloud Services
Unrestricting the C drive worked - awesome thanks. Fine for staff, but be interesting when I setup for students. -
Hi all, Have setup OneDrive on Demand for staff laptops. I am currently testing it before I push out. I have made sure I have the latest version of Windows and Onedrive client, have setup the client and I can see it has connected. But when I click on the OneDrive Icon i get "This operation has been cancelled due to restictions in effect on this computer." I guess this is due to a software restriction policy, but I cannot find anything. Should I setup an allow in applocker or something? Sorry to be vague.

Hi all, I have a Dell laptop without a ethernet port. Does anyone know of a USB to ethernet adapter that will work with PXE boot? Thanks

Hi all, I can't get offline files to sync subfolders for a synced folder. Am I missing something? Cheers
-
Hi all, Is it possible to change the download location via GPO for Edge? I have looked and all I can find is a registry edit. Cheers
-
Hi all, I have setup Offline files for staff laptops, but at the moment when I click on the sync icon under a staff login it is saying access is restricted. Is there anyway I can give access to the sync center without opening up the rest of the control panel? Cheers

Thanks all. Might leave with standalone then if HomeGroup being removed soon, just setting up network discovery and file sharing. Would it be worth leaving them with dynamic IPs or giving them static?

Hi all, I have been asked to setup a small network for a local business. I will be doing this in my spare time. Here is what they are asking: "we have a small office with 5 desktops . one on win 7 the other 4 running win 10 . Require all on one network , using the win 7 as a server , to allow us all to access some common customer files." I was thinking setting all the PCs using a workgroup rather going down the route of a domain and just setting up a shared drive on the file server? Just making sure I am on the right lines, before going down and making a fool out of myself. Sorry to ask such a simple question, but want to double check a couple of things first. Cheers

What are you doing for Bitlocker passwords? Are you presetting them or letting staff choose? I have Bitlocker creating a recovery password in AD so am not too worried, but I have been presetting passwords for staff and it just seems to be causing them confusion and they are panicking they won't remember. Cheers

I am looking for something else as well, as currently we use Xibo but I won't be so readily available to add content to Xibo in the future so want something a bit easier to use for staff. Ill give ShowPoint a go. Thanks.

Getting messages to teachers and students
Theldron replied to Theldron's topic in How do you do....it?
I have got a new PC and have not got around to installing Notify yet. But the staff dont like to use it, thats why I was thinking that as we are an Office 365 school if I pushed Teams then staff would have no excuse as they are being "encouraged" to use more of the Microsoft Apps. How have people introduced Teams? And is there a way to install via GPO? Cheers -
Hi all, Apparently I have been promoted I am a messenger boy now. 4 times today I have been asked to run up or down stairs in my building to give teachers messages for students. Normally I dont mind, but its getting annoying as things are so manic. I did introduce Netsupport Notify to help with alerts, but staff don't like using it (sorry). My next thought was maybe installing Microsoft Teams, as would like staff to start using this anyway. What do others use for messages? Cheers

Hi all, How are people setting up password resets for AD and Office 365? I would like to setup Self-service resets for both AD and Office 365, but wondered what others are using? Our setup is that our local domain and our Office365 domain are not the same, so not sure how to get around that with regards to Azure AD/SSO. Thanks
