  1. Just as a comparison we use the LA for admin support (harware, Sims, admin PC software, internet connection) but I'm employed by a group of schools for curriculum IT support (curriculum server, network, PC's etc, etc.), so I suppose its a bit of both here. Don't have the admin costs involved so can't compare that, but I'm only paid as a general IT tech.
  2. I had this request and decided it was better and more time/money effective to outsource the job to a company on the net who copied and delivered them back to us within a couple of days, just not worth the effort, plus they were printed up and not hand written or on sticky lables etc. Can't remember the name of the company off hand though.
  3. Thanks, thats interesting and would certainly swing which way I would go. Please keep us informed on how its going as it may be a few of weeks before I get it all sorted to be ordered etc. May go Ruckus (single point) due to its performance but not if its going to be problematic.
  4. Some interesting ideas there, the classrooms are in one corridor so could possibly put an ap in each class, any suggestions?, although would that make me any better off than using just one on the trolley apart from the cable damage issue? The Ruckus option looks extremely good from the reviews I've just googled. As said can't really justify going to a managed system at the moment, maybe later if it proves that the staff really use the system. Will be using the Samsung N130 which says its 802.11bg/n Compliant (not up to speed on wireless spec. so not sure how good this is and compatible to the suggestions). SimpleSi, seen that you are using the n130's and a Ruckus environment, any more problems or did the ruckus update solve them?
  5. As technology romps along one of my schools now wants to get a trolley of about 15 netbooks so I will need a good access point on the trolley. Any suggestions? Not a perfect situation but one that will do the job for what they will be using it for as they will not be having a wireless system to cover a large area and only needs wireless from desk to trolley in the same room. Have used one of these on a trolley before: Netgear WNR834M 270Mbps Wireless Router N Draft But have had one of these suggested as well: netgear-prosafe-dual-band-wireless-fwag114
  6. I would be very interested in that iso as we have them here. As far as running different versions on the same PC, not had that problem. Got V1 and V2 in another school, just need to start whichever version of software suits that camera and it worked all on the same PC, If you start the wrong software it does give an error.
  7. If the projector needs cleaning and without one its not much use, then just take out the screwdriver and methodically start to strip one. So long as you are sensible its not that bad. Having done a few now they seem to follow similar lines. The hardest job is usually getting in to the case itself.
  8. Think this has been discussed before but can't seem to find it. Is there any video conf software (free) out there that would allow the kids to video conf with each class over the network without having to create online accounts etc like MSM as the teachers don't want to get in to that. I know there is still Netmeeting but it does not seem to like my web cam and you can only do one to one (not a major point but multi conf would be good)
  9. Moved the swap file, and after some pruning of files I now have a healthy (compared to the 11Mb it did have!) 1.7Gb of space.
  10. Almost ran out of space on server c: drive! Deleted the following in an effort to eek some space: $NTServicePackUninstall...$ folders from C:\WINDOWS and $NTUninstallKb....$ folders from C:\WINDOWS, and I am just about to move the swap file over to the extra large disk we had installed last year. Anything else I could delete to make more room without affecting anything else? While I'm at changing the swap file what do people reccomend fopr the swap file, put it at system managed or manually set one to the suggested sizes?
  11. I think I will be in a meeting next week looking at where we will be going with out system, (its a primary as well) and there has been talk of why don't we move the PC' to 7 although I think this will be for new PC's, to replace older ones. We have mandatory profiles, anyone any experience of issues with a 2003 server xp/7, I know its been stated there are issues/tweaks with roaming profiles so does that mean with mandatory we would be OK? Only teachers have roaming but don't mind putting them on mandatory :-)
  12. I use that at home and its OK, not had a problem with it, filters website as I want and allows control over what daughter uses.
  13. Ditto, looks handy but have not got the foggiest what the first line is all about
  14. Got the problem sorted now thanks, bit of a Eureka....Doh! momemt really. Had one last look at the printer setting and for the features it was set as I had wanted it on a custom profile as no mirror printing, then just had a look at the printer properties themselves and low and behold there is a Printer Defaults button ( I always looked atit and thought it just reset it to its install defaults but no, it allowed me to set the printers default settings to what I wanted :-) So now I know how to set the other printers to default to B+W no matter what they last used it as. Printer savings here we come!!!! Seems to work so far (no thanks to HP and Microsoft!!!)
  15. After a bit of googling it seems its an issue with SP3, (I updated the 2003 server last week to install WSUS) so that seems to have been the change point. HP's answer is to set the option to No which is fine but I can't seem to get it to save that setting other than with a customised profile in the printer features and unfortunately when PC's log on the customised one is not the default print profile! All the other preset profiles general printing etc are set with a mirror print to Yes and seem to revert to Yes no matter what I do! I'll keep digging.
  16. Came in this morning and people are complaing that all prints going to the suite printer (HP5400, installed on server and shared ot via a logon script) are mirrored, checked the printer properties on the server and its set to Mirror Image - No, go to logged on PC and check properties Mirror Image - Yes! I can set it to No but relogging on sets it back to Yes. Though I could reset it at login by changing the registry as it has a MirrorPrint key but it does not seem to have any effect by setting it to True or False. Anyone any ideas how this has been set or how I can retrieve the situation and set it back to being Mirror Image - No by default? We have locked user profiles for the users I have tested so far s didn't think it could have been saving thesettings back to a profile.
  17. This may be resurecting an old topic but just looking at that GPO setting mine has a lock symbol on it and prevents editing, how do I remiove the lock? I presume its in another GPO setting thats overriding the policy I want to change as if I run the reg entry manually it tells me I'm not allowed to edit the registry. Where in the policy would this be set so I can unset it? Its OK, Think I've found it.
  18. Use that one as well, (just as good as DanceEjay which another school has) found it had to be installed on each PC though, anyone else installed it in a network environment?
  19. Now I don't usually enter in to these threads as I usually have better things to do but I for one must say that I am quite happy with EduGeek and if they do some money making initiatives to keep it going and thrive..Great, could not think of how I would survive in this job without you guys. Mods are necessary in forums to keep things sane as some people just don't know the line not to cross these days (I know as being a mod on another forum), if people are sensible we should not know they are there and this very thread would not have been necessary in the first place! If any of this post is just a replication of other views in this thread...sorry, but I just don't have the time to read them all. Thats my two peneth anyway (two pennies..suppose that dates me a bit!)
  20. Might seem a silly question but which groups are to be specified in the Enable Client Side Targetting? Is it the computer group name I set up in WSUS to organise which groups would recieve the updates? Checked the other setings on my installations and the only one I don't have set is that one. Think I'm just about getting the hang of it ...just one more school to go when I get the chance!
  21. Think I just want to upgrade at the moment as much as I would like a new server the thought of getting it all transfered over and set up again just fills me with dread (although I know at some point it would need to be done!). Maybe a stop gap but they don't really stress the server here (reason why it still poddles along on 512!) and it may be better to eek out a little more life out of the current server before we bite the bullet in a couple of years. Ric's suggestion sounds fine by me at the moment, its what we had had done a couple of my other schools raised memory but just added another single drive (one server had mirrired drives added but that was becuase the original ones died at the same time!). Out of interest how would you go about migrating to a new server with regard to replicating DNS, permissions, users, shares etc. etc. Never done it and seems like a nightmare time, must be a simple way I guess? We back up using NTBackup with the save system settings option ticked so I suppose that would come into use?
  22. Hmm, not thought about that. Not got much info on the server so not sure what the motherboard supports, may have to try and do a bit of googling. Have asked the original suppliers for a quote as to what they would reccomend (they were NEC servicers - don't think thts a word but it seems to fit).
  23. Our server is an NEC Express 5800 with two HD's mirrored in raid (two partitions c: and d:) and noticed that D: is getting a bit low on space and with a little money to spare before the year end, what would my best options be to add more storage as not sure how to do this wth raid etc. Currently they are two SATA 150Gb drives with two more connections free on the Motherboard. Would this be an easy job to upgrade myself? As an addition after taking the side off, it currently has 512Mb in one stick of memory with two free slots on the board, what would be a suitable upgrade in terms of amount etc. If money becomes an issue of what to change I may have £800 to £1000 to spend.
  24. Anyone got one of these Toshiba TDP-ST20 projetors and changed the bulb and then managed to reset the lamp hours? I've changed the bulb, followed the instructions in the leaflet with the bulb (press up arrow on remote while turning power on, wait for beep after 10s, then press down arrow for a further 10s untill the next beep) but no beep and no lamp reset. Tried it don't know how many times now, made sure batteries in remote are OK, remote works, beep turned on in menu (can hear beep when selecting other items in menu so I know it works), any ideas? Have done one once before and it was a nightmare then but just not getting anywhere. Looked on the net and suggestions of holding down on/input/menu on remote when starting did not work either. There are two 'service' buttons on the projector but don't know how to use them.
  25. Thanks, its downloading now, just out of interest what Classification download options do people check to have downloaded i.e. security updates, service packs, drivers etc.
