Possibly power, we had issues with U6 and found our Cisco switches did not power them correctly, using the POE injectors that came with them seemed to fix it

Intelligent Brokerage, Harrogate. I have used them previous for pre owned HP and Cisco gear, cheap enough to justify holding your own spares on site

Fortinet FortiAP 231G Connected Classroom problems
Alastairb25 replied to bewlay51's topic in Wireless Networks
Interesting. We use Unifi, mixture of 6LR, NanoHD and normal LR We have pondered replacing, but the Juniper system we where quoted for would have easily been £100k never mind license costs Unifi is not perfect, but we came to the thinking that a lot of issues are things we cannot control :- Metal shelves Excess devices, eg Students with phones, watches etc all in same room, seen one AP with over 100 devices on as an example Microwaves and so forth We are going to stick with Unifi, on the basis that we could spend and get a more commercial grade system then find it makes no difference Thanks, Alastair -
Extra Layer for Open wifi

Hi All, We have our Open Wifi segregated off and use Netsweeper. However I am aware that Netsweeper is a bit weak and Students can still use VPN I am looking for something along the lines of onsite dedicated filtering, but free, because budgets. I recall years ago one called Asatro, later bought by Sophos. Anyone out there have any suggestions? TIA Alastair

Mikrotik has multiple ports Eth1 - Existing LAN - VLAN1 Eth2 - x.x.x.x/xx a "Public SSID Wifi range" but on private IP addressing - VLAN10 for arguments sake Eth3 - x.x.x.x/xx a "Private SSID Wifi range" but on private IP addressing - VLAN20 for arguments sake Can go so far as having a laptop plugged in pickup a DHCP address within the Eth2 range via the specific scope for it and 132 option set Seems more like a Mikrotik talking back issue But also how the UDMP should fit in this setup, ie Internet | Mikrotik ISP side Mikrotik Customer side | UDMP WAN side UDMP LAN side | School Score Public Wifi side School Core LAN side - Trunk existing DHCP and Core configured with ip-helper to its IP | School Edge LAN side - Trunk Unifi AP | Public SSID | Student device Thoughts would be :- Student devices joins "Public" SSID In doing so the config from the UDMP states they are either routed to a VLAN or use a DHCP RELAY Either method Student device picks up 10.1.10.0/24 (example range with third octet being VLAN10) It then goes to VLAN10 gateway on core, say 10.1.10.254 Core can then pass it on to LAN side of UDMP WAN side exits and it talks to Mikrotik Issue is perhaps that in order to route it through UDMP id need it on seperate ranges? So a /31 between UDMP WAN and one of the Mikrotik EthX ? Thanks

Hi, We currently use Talk Straight as our ISP They supply a Mikrotik router board as a CPE with Multiple customer side ports We use a Cisco network infrastructure We use Unifi for Wifi with a Dream machine Pro We wish to move Student traffic to the following type of setup Student Device | Student SSID IP range given as a result via an IP helper pointing to existing DHCP, which will have a scope in the range using option 132 for VLAN | This then transits from the AP (on a trunk port of Cisco edge switch | Trunk port on Edge sends to Core | Core sends to (UDMP) Unifi Dream Machine Pro LAN side | UDMP Internet side connects to Mikrotik and routes out We are having some issues with communication and we think it may be the Mikrotik side Does anyone have a similar setup ? Thanks, Alastair

Hi All, I am looking into Online training to use for School IT department. Nowadays lots of new systems and limited time to Learn, Youtube and alike can be useful but it can take a long time to find the right video. I have used Train Signal before years ago (now https://www.pluralsight.com/) Has anyone other recommendations of online providers to use? Thanks, Alastair

We moved from CRB to Pebble/Tali A few initial quirks, that said Pebble is already known in the School space Cloud based, hence QR rather than finger prints iPads as Tills - We networked them in the end due to Wifi issues Integration into ParentPay, which we already use was a big plus

Talk Straight - Anyone else having issues?
Alastairb25 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Ours have been usually about 900mbps for both with speed test However a number of issues are leading us to believe its them and not us Internally iperf results of 940mbps PC to Server, onyl dropping to 929mbps via phone Helpdesk calls not answered No one answering phone Phone calls not returned Our internet usage is hovering lower than 100mbps when we usually go at more than 350mbps I have read some articles suggesting variosu ongonig DDOS attacks relating to Russia and Germany due to the latetr sending Ukraine tanks, unsure how that might come into play if at all Going to mirror some switch ports I would say spikes is the same as us, we normally have very smooth speeds but my images show similar problems, very on and off traffic also we logged loss of ping to 8.8.8.8 ie Google etc and some onsite devices reported internet disconnection Thanks, Alastair - - - Updated - - - Speed test result -
Hi, Anyone else having issues? Started two days ago, spurious issues with VOIP phones. Yesterday various drops They insist have no issues, but phone call wait times increased massively suggest we are not alone Suggests they do have any issue? Mikrotik been rebooted and internal tests for us show 940mbps/sec speed tests find point to point General internet speed has dropped right off to < 100mbps/sec when we usually run closer to 350mbps/sec as if we have some kind of limit or cannot reach destinations Thanks, Alastair

I went for a similar solution. However I am looking for a way that the "School Calendar" mailbox is activated automatically, rather than the user having too tick it.

Talk Straight - Issues
Alastairb25 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
On a Server to Server basis bandwidth fine Bandwidth from one of HyperV hosts is fine (today..) However from a Workstation its not great, Workstation is Cisco Edge Switch > Cisco Core > Talk Straight CPE Bit slower during day so only pulling 800 ish to a HyperV host Better but still not blinding, perhaps traffic shaping comes into play? -
Talk Straight - Issues
Alastairb25 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Changes taking a long time to come into play, often 10 minutes plus Does not seem to be a way of submitting changes, as an example we would rather submit a site abcd.com to be categorised than get into adding to Whitelists Interface is very slow to use -
Talk Straight - Issues
Alastairb25 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
The Status page details the issues - https://hub.talk-straight.com/serverstatus.php "UPDATE 23/11/2021 00:10 Good Morning All, The Netsweeper platform has been expanded with the aim of eliminating slow speed issues suffered by some customers over the last month. Additional servers have been added to our main inline proxy clusters as well as adding a further cluster to increase available bandwidth. We will be monitoring the platform closely throughout the morning and will be contacting customers with open cases to gather feedback. Thanks," Locally speed fine Internet speed yesterday was appalling, on various sites, barely get 1mb Better today, however I have come from a setup of 1gb via LUNS (Lancaster University Network Services) and a Fortigate 101E Much faster speed, often pushing into the 900mbps on speed tests, real world fast downloads The real world speed of this link seems very poor, I suspect due to filter constraints -
Hi, Do any of you use Talk Straight? We have been a customer for a number of years. However recently we have found the Netsweeper filter is causing us a number of problems. The Customer support has also been poor. We wanted to check to see if we are unique in these issues or if it is indicative of a wider issue? Thanks, Alastair ICT Network Manager Netherhall School, Maryport

Hi All, We bought some replacement servers from ICT Direct. We ended up pushing them into Service earlier than we would have liked. We are looking at rebuilding them using Storage spaces and would like to talk to other users of similar hardware regarding setup within Storage spaces along with other options such as REFS v NTFS and so forth. Kind Regards, Alastair ICT Network Manager Netherhall School Maryport

Does anyone have Crystal Disk Mark results on the various setups mentioned?

We may potentially look at this in the future.. So the "Cloud" implementation is presumably a Remote Desktop Server hosted by them?... mmm
