Check simple things next such as the location for the profiles to be stored. Test with a couple of users and point the profile to a different location. Next try the permissions on the folder.

If you are after a quick solution with little effort then you can use group policy preference to send out a scheduled task to each workstation. If you check the blogs section above, there is a recent post on how set this up.

Unfortunately the nas box would not be capable as it runs a Linux operating system. What I mean is exactly what Michael says, the iscisi software target is an emulator for the connection but the software requires server 2008 r2 for installation on the nas/fileserver. I have tested this on three separate installs with disk sizes up to 1.5 tb and noticed no heavy resource usage, although I was just watching task manager and had not setup any performance monitors. The software just allows the creation of a VHD on the nas/fileserver for use by dpm.

Scott, What functional level is your domain operating at? We use a registry key deployed through preferences which points to a network share for the desktop background. We simply update the file on the share which in turn updates all the computers. We also do another preference for altering another reg key on the workstations which sets the background setting to stretch. You could try the above but the problem is that your wallpaper may look too stretched. Alternatively, you could get two versions of your desktop as you need and then apply two WMI filters to the users. Using the this site you could set one filter for the widescreen and then one for the 4:3 that applies on logon. The WMI filtering is a great tool to use, I use WMI filtering to work out whether the user needs a 64bit or 32bit shared start menu.

You should try Microsoft's Data Protection Manager. Its a brilliant product that is currently available as 2010 but the 2012 version is out for beta. The software can utilise disk and tape backup but disks have to be from an iSCSI source. Pricing is very competitive also, if i remember correctly the last renewal cost in my FTE Agreement from Microsoft cost £70 for the product with SQL and then £25 for an Enterprise Licence and £5 for a Standard Licence. Enterprise Licences will cover your boxes with SQL, such as SharePoint, Exchange, SQL etc. The standard licence is for anything else, Server 2008, Server 2003, Win 7 etc There are some solutions you can implement to achieve your goal with DPM, such as a virtual tape library or use Microsoft's iSCSI Software Target. The virtual tape library is great if you wish to use a NAS storage or USB drive for long term storage. If you wish to just use disk backup, i recommend the iSCSI target if you have a spare server or NAS box. It will need Server 2008 R2 installed but will allow the server to fake an iSCSI connection.

We have a setup at my school for students, guests and domain machines to use the wireless on seperate SSIDs. We do not set a key for the wireless login but use EAP and request the domain login of the user to connect. Upon the atempt at connection, NPS from a server 2008 client will run it remediation checks on antivirus and windows updates before allowing access. Routing for the wireless link travels through to our proxy which has a default rule applied so that students do not need to enter any proxy details

I had a similar issue that a certain printer appeared for everybody even though it was not listed to be deployed. I cannot remember what i did in the end to get rid of it but i'm sure it was something in the properties for the printer itself. As for removing printers on logoff, just use a script that runs on logoff as found in this thread Remove Printers

Hi, We have recently rebuilt a large number of machines with the a new 64bit image. Originally the clients had our SCCM client installed from our server remotely and now we need to get the client back on to computers. All fine except the computers have the exact naming setup as before and SCCM tells us that a cleint has not been installed. Is there anyway to automate this process? Apologies if this is a simple fix but i dont know a lot about SCCM!

Hi, we currently have a mixture of physical and virtual DCs in school. At the moment we have a wireless link to a local primary school who utilise our network and all machines are part of our domain. At the primary school, we use a HV server that virtualises a RODC server with cached users for the primary school. Our issue stands with the group policies that apply to the workstations at the primary school. Although they connect to our FRDC for DHCP, we would like them to receive group policies from the local RODC instead of coming over the wireless link. How can i force the workstations to point to a local server? I could create a separate site in AD but would this require a new domain?

Hi, Trying to deploy a printer from an x86 print server to a x64 client and receiving and error when trying to add additioanl drivers. The error i receive is "Operation Could not be Completed (0x00000244)". I have tried a couple of other drivers for the Brother HL-6050 and i think it might be that the driver is not difitally signed?? I have also checked versions and these appear to be correct be the same as the x86 version on the server. I have searched the error but nothing is coming up that makes any sense. Can anybody help, or do i just need to create a x64 server for printer deployment

Hi, I have a room that currently has a number of 32bit Win 7 Ent computers and we are in the process of replacing with Win7 64bit Ent computers in a phased apporach. Currently all students are mapped to a shared start menu via GPO and gives problems to a 64bit machine if the software is a 32bit application. I have read a few articles on here regarding the Access Based Enumeration and start menus for TS and have applied the solution to the computers. This has given me the correct start menu for students but the internet credentials do not seem to passing thorough from the AD logon as they are constantly requested to enter their username and password. I have applied the GPO Loopback with replace and merge but the same thing happens each time. I have also seen some inconsistency as the dictated wallpaper image does not get applied each time.

Just a quick question, but surely a number of machines pulling lots of pictures at the same time would drastically kill bandwidth on your network even if you reduced the image size to a bare minimum

How does this work in terms of backup and restore. I know you have a sharepoint recycle bin, but what about going back further that a month or two compared to long term backups and/or Previous Versions?

This is true but a bit overkill for 4 pcs dont you think? Personally i would run the install froma network share and boot with PE. Its a similar approach to what he/she was using initially except you do not need to carry around a portable HDD

I back sted and go for a WDS deployment using the PXE boot providing the number of workstations warrant this. The WDS approach is for medium to large scale deployment but there are alternative methods that are best suited for smaller organisations. How many machines are you going to image?

Hi, I have applied the reg key as per Windows 7 Gotchas which works really well. I have a background folder located in the Netlogon share and just update the file within here to change all workstations. My issue is that it seems quite random to each user/machine on how to display the wallpaper. I have some users that will have the wallpaper centred, some tiled, some stretched etc. Can i force a centre wallpaper for all users through a reg key?

Wemhave similar issues with a HP Colour Laserjet 2320 multi function. The bloody thing will be fine as soon as you switch it on, but leave it for 10 mins and it goes offline. It's weird because we host the printer from a print server, yet if I print direct from workstations it's fine?? What is even more weird is that the drivers for any os is no longer on the HP site! Have they found the flaw?

There are three different ways that the driver can be updated. Firstly, you or another local administrator user can log onto the machine, open up printers or devices and printers and right click on the printer. You should now be given the opportunity to update driver. Secondly, in theory GPO refresh should send the driver out the next time the workstation restarts and applies e computer settings. We found that this option was not successful for about 40% of our clients. Thirdly, their is an option in group policy management called Point and Print. When the GPO is applied to a user, it allows that user to install the driver. This option is only available for Vista and above. I'm not sure of the exact location of the GPO of the top of my head but search my username and you will see my post about the same thing on here.

Used to use somthing similar a while back for the first netbooks from ASUS. As you only had a small 4GB space, you could slip stream s Windows XP install to fit on by removing all the un-used stuff such as Languages etc.
