  1. Well to make my situation clear. I have a 7 year old core switch which you can no longer buy modules, unless of ebay. It makes sense to buy a core switch which is capable of 10GB. I have set a three year plan to do all buildings but the first year will be focused on our new building. This has the highest number of mobile/static workstations. Each year will be a lot cheaper as it will be down to access switch upgrades and transceiver. Obviously the first year is going to be a lot of money but after the 3rd year the infrastructure should be secure for another 7 years. I do worry about our internet connection if we decided to make more use of cloud based technology.
  2. We currently have 80 Aruba 105 N access points the system was specced to support 30 devices per classroom. Its not really been tested because that would be a lot of kit needed! I could spend a lot of time working on this. Could any suggest south west companies who could provide the kit and recommend a solution? Thanks for everyones comments its good to have validation Ross
  3. I'll give that a shot this week
  4. Can you use MS clustering and failover with switch SAS? I currently have N capable access points with Aruba but currently have 100mg to the access points. I am upgrading that as a priority to make full use of N. I just want to ensure that I am fully prepared for a lot of devices and a lot of money being spent. No school likes bad publicity when it comes to spending lots of money on a project and it flops due to not being prepared!
  5. I have two separate switches which are setup with MPIO which either are not connected to my core switch what so ever.
  6. We would be looking to run an internal cloud based solution ourself. We currently host an internal exchange. I have link aggregation setup already with some switches and using teaming on my virtual host servers. My worry at present is with the iSCSI traffic.
  7. I am assessing my current network and trying to future proof the network by looking at 10GB backbone. Only reason I am looking into it because we are looking at one to one devices to every child so potentially we would have over 1500 devices on the network. Majority of it will be on the wireless. Should I consider 10GB to 1GIG poe? Then upgrade my servers to 10GB connection to the core or am I over thinking it to much? Any suggestions? At present I have two virtual host servers with an MD3200i with two iSCSI switches with MPIO round robin. All running on Hyper V. Thanks in advance Ross
  8. The school I work at is looking into the mass deployment of iPads to all staff and students but we have been realistic in which equipment will still remain on the network. 1) Specialist media systems for logic, final cut 2) Computer labs for BTEC ICT lessons 3) Drop in centre for access to PCS 4) Admin staff access. As great as iPads are in the real world they are still a consumer device and iPad in education is being stuck together with Sellotape to make something work to a degree. People like us will always will be needed in schools but our job will be come more of an ICT LSA for class room support. I predict a network manager is still needed but more of an account manager to deal with the existing network and support contracts. Just my thoughts Ross
  9. Be handy if you found that MSI which changes the language
  10. Sccm 2012 is great and made my life easier as a network admin. Forefront is ok I did find it has very little custimisation in regards to exceptions etc.

  13. I setup a 2008 r2 vpn server but also setup along side it NAP so it does the health validating to ensure clients have a Firewall, Antivirus and upto date computer before they can get full access. I also have it certificate driven so only people who have the root certificate can connect. I did look into ssl VPNS but I wanted to find connecting to a VPN as easy as possible. Ross

  15. Locations I have found the best way to setting proxy settings. In some instance some places I have worked with have had firefox for home use which has no proxy settings and safari for when they are in work. I think locations are a much better way. Ross
  16. This script has been working fine with Windows 7 for the past 6 month. It literally only started a month ago out of the blue. The printer states its deleting on the server and when you delete all the jobs in the queue the printer fully deletes. It does not touch the paper cut printer at all. It has also happened too a few other printers. Ross
  17. Manageengine service desk plus. Good helpdsk software prob to powerful for a school though. Ross
  18. Its a Toshiba virtual queue on paper cut. Permissions are set for domain admins full control and everyone print control. Being deployed with a script based on computer name. Ross

  21. I would love to believe that Apples updates fix most issues but in some cases they cause more damage than good!
  22. One thing which annoyed me was the forefront management. You don't have a great deal of control with the client.
  23. You can redirect the cache to the local machine using a manage preference. It creates a symbolic link redirecting ~/Library/Cache to the local tmp folder. I found the following article on how to do it. OS X Network Home Folder Redirection « House of Mac Ross
  24. By any chance are you using Lion server 10.7.3? If you are its a known issue with Apple but no fix has been presented. I believe it has something to do with postgres. Spent a lot of time trying to fix the issue last week with no joy its in Apples hands.
