Switches to provide 1GbE to the edge are not that much more expensive than 100MbE now, and usually better switches for it as well. If these switches are going to be in for ten years, you should be putting 1GbE in unless money is so unbelievably scrapingly tight that you have to cut what corners you can. 10GbE, on the other hand, is still expensive at the core, but finally at the point where it's not beyond consideration. You should at least plan for the expansion in that direction, even if you don't implement for another few years.

Hyper-V has changed so much since I implemented 2008R2 four years ago. Out of interest, as my servers are due for renewal next summer, how much are the JBOD trays for external Shared Spaces storage? Does Hyper-V support hardware snapshotting on this set up, for quicker/better backups?

I know I'm lucky in the school I'm at, but I've gotta say: they're pretty good here. I mean, there's still a huge range of users from those nearing retirement who are content with email and registers and not much more up to the Head of IT who was a data warehousing consultant in a previous life, but our baseline here is pretty solid, and we don't have any out and out refuseniks. I've spent my entire 5+ years here just doing the basics right, though--make it simple, make it reliable, make it predictable. No fancy-pants iPads or Smartboards or software has even been prescribed, only ever made available and as non-threatening as possible. in their own time. We answer stupid questions with a smile and try and show people how to help themselves and occasionally send out tips on the basics and, bit by bit, left to their own devices... everyone has gotten on with it. Favourite quote from a teacher: "I never wanted to use IT, but you've just made it so useful." Most are confident enough in the day to day basics of Office, email, register, internet, but more importantly they seem confident in asking us about things.

Dunno, sorry, and just had to box up the x585z to send back colour accuracy isn't great, though contrast accuracy is, and you can print to inkjet photo paper so you can get some decent results, but it is still only an office printer and won't ever replace a proper photography printer.

If you mean new licences of Windows: quantity doesn't matter, you can deploy as many as you like whenever you like; versions, you're fully covered for all upgrade and downgrade rights. Upgrade when you want, not when you can afford it. Is it worth it? Depends how many computers you have and how often you upgrade Windows and Office.

We replaced our 3COMs (we used to have a 5500G at the core as well) with the HP Comware switches - that is, HP bought 3COM, so we put that range out. It meant we could re-use existing fibre SFPs which saved thousands of pounds. We stacked to HP A5800s at the core as a replacement for the 5500G, and we use A5120s (both POE & non-POE) at major cabinets. Smaller cabs that don't justify a level 3 switch, e.g. those supplying a single IT room, get an HP-1910.

Just extract the AdobeAIRInstaller.exe with 7zip (or other tool of your choice) and it has an MSI inside. Works for lots of other EXEs too, always worth a go. EDIT for clarity: extract the contents of the EXE into a folder, put all the contents into the location for the GPO, point at the MSI. The MSI needs the other files for the installation, so you can't just move the MSI alone over. This is true for any MSI you get with this method.

You need to enable Directory Browsing if you want people to have a view of the folder: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731109%28v=ws.10%29.aspx In brief: open IIS Manager, click on your server or website in the tree (depending on where you want to enable it; irrelevant if it's the only website) then double click Directory Browsing in the main window. Then click Enable on the right hand side.

I wouldn't say it protests - Packages exists entirely to deploy them - it's just not as elegant as MSIs through the Applications mechanism. EXEs-with-SCCM is infinitely better than EXEs-with-AD-only.

I love it, because it was my first 40k, but it didn't exactly flow. A tumblr of interest to people here: Hipsterhammer It's more WFB at the moment (the £50 army lists are brilliant) but it's entertaining and part written by Kieron Gillen, who has done many wonderful things.

Does it matter? I mean, what's the point in following people other than getting info you need? Says the twitter noob whose only experience is from the school feed. We followed the local bus companies for obvious reasons and a couple of local papers so we can retweet relevant stuff, but other than that I don't think there's much point in following anyone else. I followed the DfE early on out of a sense of "that seems sensible" but it mostly just fills the feed with carp.

I've got an x585z on my desk right now (just had the email to send it back booo) and to be honest, 55ppm is already ludicrous enough that 70ppm isn't any more ludicrous. Side by side you could tell, of course, but both are equally daft. I suspect if HP pushed themselves, they could get these devices to 88ppm and they'd be able to print work from the future. Who knows, maybe then kids would get coursework done to the deadline they'd been given. I tell you what, though, because I've not been picking apart the print quality on this one but only printing to it normally, I have forgotten it's inkjet. It's print quality is good enough to be indistinguishable from laser on a day to day basis. And the Flow MFP stuff is still amazing. You've never seen scans so fast. EDIT: not tested borderless yet, actually. Might have to give that a go before I give this one up until October.

You're very welcome The blacks aren't as black either - compare text side by side and you can tell. Taken on its own merits, though, General Office looks absolutely fine to me, especially if it's only for student work. And when quality does matter, you've got professional.
