Have you check event logs? I have seen this before and I think it ended up being something to do with the type of certificate used for Outlook 2010 clients.

Schools in Gloucestershire are considering their options. We held a meeting where 40 schools attended, as well as 1 prospective ISP and SWGFL. SWGFL sent 4 people to deliver a presentation. Following this, prices have tumbled and SWGFL are now even offering 12 month deals. The competition amongst the providers has been a good thing, as far as schools are concerned. We still won't be staying with them though! We're going to EXA Networks as of April. If anyone would like more information, feel free to PM me.

Hi Guys, I had build an intranet server at my last school and managed to get this working no problem. I've tried it again now (a couple of years later) and can't get it to work. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing. I've built it on a Server 2003 box and followed the help guide to the word. I keep getting a HTTP Error 404 - File or Directory not found. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm sure its something obvious! If I get it working I will be happy to make a donation to the creator. Regards,

If the client is going out to the internet first through the default gateway then it won't be able to resolve the DNS name on the way back in.

I would get your ISP to investigate. It sounds like a routing issue to me. If your 45 range goes through the gateway then all of your clients on the 45 range are accessing your servers through the tcp port, which I guess is capped at 32MB.

Do you have 2 different DHCP scopes for each range? Have you tried creating 1 scope to cover all 44 and 45 IP range?

If you go to a machine in the 45 range and tracert to a server in the 44 range, does it go via your default gateway address or does it go straight to the server? If so, it is a routing issue and needs to be resolved by whoever manages your router.

The error I get is: The LDAP extension of your PHP parser isn't installed Impossible to use LDAP as external source of connection I have altered the extension=php_ldap.dll in the PHP.ini as per instructions (removed the ;, but when I do that the apache service fails to start. The dll is in the directory. I have set it up on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. I would be most grateful for any help. Many thanks,

We use vsphere 5 and have been doing so for about a year. It has been faultless. You need to be sure how many servers you are ever likely to use. VMware has strange licensing and if you go past 3 physical hosts (or I think they go by physical processor sockets) the cost of the license goes through the roof. You also need good storage (not just large capacity). We run a network of 1600 users, 3 physical hosts (each with 62GB RAM) and 20 odd VMs. The datastore is a 12TB IBM SAN. It runs like a dream. The failover is great. When one server has a problem, all of the VMs transfer live to the other hosts and no downtime is experienced. I carried out extensive research and testing and found that Veeam Backup and Recovery is best when it comes to backing up your virtual estate. I managed to restore an entire 500GB VM in less than 10 minutes.

Thanks Localzuk/DosBox, I feared as much. I'm happy to spend money to get the right product. We already have glpi in place, but the installation was carried out by my predecessor and seems a little jumbled. The support side of it doesn't appear to be great either. That being said, it is a very powerful tool.

Is it worth looking at something else or shall I fine tune the installation of spiceworks? A lot of people on here use it, which is one of the main reasons we want to run with it. For free software, the support on the web seems pretty good too. I have a fairly open mind about what to try. Thanks for your input.

Hi Guys, I'm trying to setup Spiceworks on a dedicated VM to handle our IT inventory and Helpdesk ticketing software. The problem I'm having is when we have the VM powered on, the users complain that login times are very poor. When we power it off, the network kicks back into life. I have disabled the network scanning tool, but we still experience the same problem. Info on the network, we have about 600 machines, 3 vmware hosts with about 20 vms in total and approx 1600 users. Has anyone else experienced this?

Will the end user experience anything different other than the additional apps? We have live@edu here, and it is excellent. I just wouldn't want to sign up to something if the interface changes without discussing it with SLT. Would it be possible to sign up, migrate and disable everything so we can test and add to our environment as and when we choose to? Sorry if I haven't explained this well! Many thanks,

We use school issued mobiles now, but basic walky talky did the job in my last school. Cheap too!

Hi retals, VMware Essentials Plus limits you to 3 physical hosts, and has no VMotion for failover. There is bound to be other things but these were the main draw backs when I was looking at this. I don't think there is an option to upgrade VMWare Essentials Plus to the Enterprise license easily. Personally I think that VMWare essentials is well suited to the educational environment. It is a damn site cheaper, and provided you have good hosts with plenty of RAM, you can run more than enough VMs to cope with a school network of any size (with the exception of Universities).

Will Live@Edu customer eventually be migrated to Office365?

I have MCITP:EA and MCITP:EDST. It was worth it just for the satisfaction of completing it. Definitely helps to get to interview stage (along with experience) in the current climate.

I very much agree with this. In my experience, if you limit your work to private businesses they will return to you in future (providing you do a good job), and pay you for the extra support. I'd rather do the odd week of work for £1000+ at a time than hundreds of small jobs for home users at a poor rate. Some people think that because they have given you £20 for a small job they are entitled to a lifetime of technical support!

It was ages ago now. That's just one example of why I decided to stop doing private jobs at work.
