I did look at driver isolation that could help with the problem of print spooler crashing however still leaves me with dead 6000's. I think they shouldnt of been branded OfficeJet but DeskJets with 'networking' I would have steered well clear then.

Hi, We have about 8 of these printers which worked perfectly well on our old x86 (2k3) PrintServer and XP clients, we have now migrated the site to Win7 X64 and the PrintServer is 2k8R2. I have setup the printers on the server using the Basic version 13 drivers and from the server works perfectly. But if you then connect to the printer share it completely screws for lack of a better word the local print spooler and renders the clients ability to print to any printer dead. The only fix I have found is to re image the client and not install the 6000. I have tried all the usual tricks of different drivers, compatibility even the dreaded universal driver, that worked but the print outs were absolute gar gar so no help there. I'm completely lost, and asking HP resulted in an argument that they do not support networking on these printers (hello it has a network port for what exactly?) anyway. Does anyone use these printers on a server client bases and explicitly with Windows 7 x64 I would love to hear from you. Many thanks, Rob

Group Policies Preferences is what I've used before now to fix up odd little files like that, works very well.

I have a strange problem where I have a user with offline files My Documents redirected (13gb) and its taking ages to login, however if I disable offline files then is almost instant. I think it’s the initial check it does for any changes that taking the long time and the simple fact the user has almost 20k+ of files to check! Is there a way of disabling this initial check and only synchronizing on a schedule? Any help much appreciated!

Just recently purchased a 42U Dell cab (extra deep) very please so far.

We have 2 of theses I’m using iscsi to present to DPM and they work a treat. Not very loud, just the hard drives clicking. I did have one were the power supply went but was quickly replaced. If its important you could go for the rack version which also has more ram and faster processor and redundant power supplies. Transfer rate I’m not sure but I’ve completely filled one and just starting on the second, but backing up our entire system doesn’t take long. I have these connect on 2x 1G links using multi pathing.

Well its limited, I’m using DPM to do my backups on my VMs and it does work at the moment but I have to do serialised backups which take an age and do fail, if I can use the hardware VSS it could half my time but not at the expense of stability. Though to be fair I really only use these boxes as iscsi targets with replication nothing else! Worth the risk?

Oh heck ... I've been running my two 7110 for a couple of years now very happily (on the Sun firmware might I add) I haven’t upgraded in ages, the old saying if it ant broke don’t fix it. However I need to upgrade to a version that supports the hardware VSS provider for Windows so I can do SAN level VSS backups from my Hyper-V hosts. But after reading this scary thread I’m very worried about upgrading at all!!!! Does anyone know which version the hardware VSS provider is supported in or will I need to venture into Oracle scareware!

The only downside I could see was a small performance hit, esp if there loading videos etc, but also managing the very large databases. Jdoyle; do you have these split into a number of small more manageable databases, also what are you doing for backup?

I’m sorry when I received the quote from Capita asking for the best part of £20k, I laughed, its ridicules. Luckily our business manager see sense and has decided to go with another package which a school very close to use is also going to use instead of FMS (I’m at home at the moment so don’t have the name) ok does costs a fair of setup bit but looks a million times better than FMS. That’s now reduced our quote a fair bit but it’s still high, I do understand that Capita incur costs for all this and of course need to make money that fair enough. But I’m not going to stand idly by and be mugged. I think really there should be a transfer rate of ownership from the LEA to the new Academy and plus however many days consultancy for changes would be perfectly acceptable.

Big fan of QNAP stuff, it just works even when you have hardware problems and the feature set is endless!

DPM is very good for Exchange backups, we use it for recovery on a per e-mails basis if needed, also DPM does live snapshots of the whole hyper-v VM for disaster recovery. Not sure on backup options for Virtual Box though I’m afraid, just make sure it has VSS support for exchange if you’re doing live backups. Don’t want to corrupt your databases.
