  1. On my work experience I was building a load of brand new PCs back in the day where drives weren't that cheap I managed to bend a load of pins on a hard drive and was bricking myself about telling the boss, luckily I managed to bend them all back in place somehow using the cable and it worked fine! Probably one of the first to fail but by then I would have long completed my work experience anyway
  2. I'm trying to exterminate a 2003 server but need to find out who (if anyone) is still accessing any of the standard shared folders held on it! Is there an easy way of doing things other than messing about with Windows auditing which I've always found a bit rubbish anyway? Just need to know if someone opens either a share or a file inside a share, their computer name / username (both ideally but either or is fine!). It is part of AD if that helps
  3. Looking to build a 8 Core SQL Server 2016 (Windows Server 2016) VM What is the best way to go about configuring the CPU setup as I can set both virtual sockets and cores per socket so not sure if I do 1 socket 8 cores, 2 sockets 4 cores etc...
  4. Well that looks crap, and it'll be scared of a drop on the carpet let alone a hard floor... Nothing really unique about it compared to the other basic Nokia phones you get free with a box of cereal either, I used to get them as work phones and the battery just never died on those either! They didn't even have a camera!
  5. I've built a new MDT server on Server 2016 and the latest MDT release (8443) Now I want to copy the entire DeploymentShare / RemoteInstall folders across from the old server to the new server so I can test it before replacing the old server but when I do a copy and paste of the folder from the old server to the new server it gets right to the end of the copy then won't copy the following files as it says they are currently in use : binlsvcdb.mdb ESE ESEtmp tmp.edb DDP DdpDb.mdb DDPtmp tmp.edb What is causing these files to be locked? Is there a service that I can quickly shut down on the old server so that they copy across then start it back up?
  6. He went for the Amazon one in the end as he had some vouchers to use up on there. Of course he could have done the same a couple of weeks ago and saved £30 or so but there you go!
  7. Does anyone know the cheapest place to get an SSD of around 500GB (Anything just under / over that capacity absolutely fine as I know they come in slightly odd sizes!) For a mate so doesn't have to be top performance or anything, I did recommend him one I found for about £95 the other week on Amazon but being as lazy as he is failed to order it and now that has almost doubled in price!
  8. My old line manager is going tomorrow, although quite ambitiously he has advance train tickets booked to arrive into Kings Cross around 10am and has to be back there for about 5pm for the train back!
  9. I got a response back from Pearson about these mythical 'retired tests' and it makes things a lot more clear, in that it isn't designed to have any shortcuts or be run manually and faffing about with - once installed it just associates itself with the practice files available on various courses on their website (.pkgx) One is available from the following if you ever need it for testing purposes! http://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/BTEC-Firsts/Business/2012/Specification-and-sample-assessments/Unit-2-Sample-assessment-material.zip
  10. I found out this morning if I simply click 'No' to that error message it does the 'TPO.exe' has stopped working in the normal Windows 7 way, then if you simply launch it again it works! So that makes a lot of sense
  11. That is running C:\Program Files (x86)\Pearson\SamplePlayer\TPO.exe
  12. I have been requested to install the Practice Test Player in a classroom as available here https://btecng.pearson.com/btecng/Demo/Edi.Advance.Tdp.SamplePlayer.Setup.msi However, when I run that on a 64 Bit W7 workstation it goes through the motions of installing and creates a bunch of files in Program Files (x86) but then no desktop / start menu shortcuts and if I try to run the executable in the Program Files folder it just comes up with some weird error! Any ideas?
  13. Is there a slight mistake on Page 5? "Line Manager: Senior ICT Technician" Nice school anyway for anyone interested in applying, just made me realise in a few weeks I'll only be working up the road in Harrogate myself!
  14. With a 1.76% market share you can't really blame them!
  15. In the end I downloaded the offline installer, extracted the lot, whacked it in a folder on the SCCM applications share then just created a new application and pointed SCCM to the 'netfullx64.msi' file or whatever it was called and it did all the switch stuff automatically and worked during a test image Then I found out part of the SCCM server must have been infected with one of those encryption malwares as most of the other application folders just contained loads of files with the 'india' file extension! So not actually sure how it is working at all there, does it copy the applications somewhere else on the server when I 'distribute content'?
  16. Does anyone know the best way to deploy the .NET Framework 4.6.2 through an SCCM Windows 7 image task? (Don't need to do anything fancy like deploy it to existing machines in SCCM!) Can it be added as an Application in Software Library so I can just add the install during the task sequence?
  17. Bit of a long shot but are there any fellow FE admins on here that maintain the Capita UNIT-e MIS system? I'm back at my old place helping out and they've recently been told the current setup is a bit insecure so could do with fixing, all to do with external web and application servers and DMZ but the documentation isn't fantastic and it would be useful if I could get in touch (or at least give the guys a lead!) with someone that has all the web stuff set up more securely
  18. Got my old 55" TV but moving for a new job shortly so won't have the room! At the minute it is at my old housemates so would be a collection from Shipley in West Yorkshire, at a push I could maybe arrange a delivery but I seem to remember a lot of the original packaging went in the bin and trying to protect such a big screen isn't too easy! Can't find the exact specs at the moment but it is this one : Furrion 55" Full HD 1080p LED TV Freeview Black now £399.99 @ Ebuyer + 2 Year Warranty - HotUKDeals It has Freeview built in but not Freeview HD however obviously does have 1080p via HDMI! Will try and get a picture sorted soon £250?
  19. Unbelievable! 2016 strikes again
  20. Happy Christmas Sadly I won't remember much of it...

  22. Not too important, if I want something new I follow the procedure to bid for capital funds just like everyone else has to! At my last place I had a Core 2 Quad PC with SSD and 24" screen (gradually upgraded over the years) but can't really say I would have needed much else, half of my day was spent using Remote Desktop to servers or VMWare console anyway! Couldn't care less about having a laptop as that would mean they wanted me to work from home a lot, and for a work phone we had the basic Nokia models not even with a camera!
  23. Personally networking is one thing that I never have quite got along with, I remember when we had Cisco switches my old line manager recommended using Cisco Network Assistant and to be honest it could do most of the stuff you would ever need to do in a nice graphical interface instead of worrying about memorising command line commands! Not sure if HP have anything similar there, they have a web interface but I'm not sure how good it is...
  24. Personally when we set this up after a short period we ensured people could only log in using their ID badge. No ID badge, no printing which helped promote the 'No ID badge you shouldn't be on site in the first place' policy It is fairly simple to implement depending on your MFDs and print control software, get some decent USB readers and make sure they're placed in a convenient place within the MFD so that people know where to scan but hidden away so they don't get nicked too easily either! I had a number of sales people tell me they could offer fingerprint scanning these days as an alternative so maybe look into that instead no idea what the cost would be or the laws around storing several hundred staff and student fingerprints mind!
  25. Is there something I'm missing to block Windows 10 automatically restarting my laptop when it decides it is update time? I've got the option to set 'active hours' but I don't really have any set active hours as such, it is my laptop which is generally just left running 24/7 and I leave various documents, Google Chrome tabs etc open which all just get wiped out by the restart! What happened to the good old days where you could just download the updates and choose to install them at your own convenience?!
