We just got a 76mb fibre connection installed for our wireless network. It roughly hits this on a wired connection, on our Bluesocket Wireless G routers (They're fairly old!) the wireless client (iPhone 5) can get between 20-23mb download and about 19mb upload (This is in line with the 19.5mb theoretical maximum upload speed on the fibre package). Is this about right? As I've been reading around and found Wireless G operates in half duplex mode so it would be around right?

With regards to the Microsoft HUP for Office, if we ordered a Backup DVD could we create our own copies for distribution to staff in our Library? (The idea being they could then pay the £8.95 for their serial number / digital download then loan a copy of the media from the Library if they needed it rather than having to fork out another £8.95 which they probably won't be too happy about!!! Despite how much they're saving if they actually bought it retail...). Or is the media tied to the individual serial keys?

Another reason for the 99p or whatever is it means the cashier has to open the till to give change which makes it harder for them to pocket the quid or so I thought anyway!

RIP - I actually spat my drink all over my keyboard when I saw this just now! A total shock!

Does anyone know how to get Google Chrome to redirect Bookmarks to a user's home folder? With Internet Explorer it is fairly simple, but Google the only option in the policy templates I can see is to do with redirecting the entire User Data directory for Chrome which does work in terms of the Bookmarks trouble is it also stores history etc and becomes massive very quickly!!! Thanks

Thanks for the help, the command prompt stuff did the trick for now (Still getting my head round Powershell!)

When a student right clicks the LanSchool Student icon a Windows Explorer window appears with the location set to C:\Lanschool Files. Fine as then the student / teacher can share files with each other. However, they can then click the 'C:\' part of the path and now have access to the C:\ drive where they can access the Windows folder, command prompt etc! Any idea how we can stop them navigating out of the Lanschool Files folder?!

Alternatively, can we have a local profile in this suite and basically ignore the user roaming profiles?
-
We have a need for one suite of 15 or so computers to be 64 Bit - The problem being we are using roaming profiles and are running 32 Bit Windows 7 everywhere else. Hence the roaming profile would become an issue if someone logged in to a 32 Bit then a 64 Bit (and vice versa). Is there any way to set up a Group Policy or something for this room so the user could in effect have 2 roaming profiles, 1 for the rest of the site and 1 just for this 64 Bit IT suite?

Is there any way to make Skype remember a Skype Name machine wide? (and just ask for the password?)

For the past couple of months (Around the same time as the clocks changed!) my PC along with a handful of others at work are acting strange. Basically every Monday morning without fail I'll come in, switch my PC on and it'll just get stuck at the Windows 7 'Please Wait' screen. If I reboot into Safe Mode, then restart (Don't have to log in) the PC gets past that point and works fine for the rest of the week...until the following Monday! Any ideas what is going on?

IE10 Homepage via GPP - every other setting works apart from home page?
googlemad replied to sidewinder's topic in Windows
We do use MDT, that did go some way to explaining it however not much use to resolving the issue on the 300+ PCs already imaged! But just this morning I've found a fix! As above you create a GPP for IE8 under User Configuration > GPP > Control Panel Settings > Internet Settings of your relevant group policy putting in the relevant homepage (And pressing F5 to make a green line appear under it before clicking OK!). Then you go to C:\windows\sysvol\sysvol\yourdomain.ac.uk\Policies and search for InternetSettings.xml. Once found, open up the file in notepad and modify the line type="VERSION" gte="1" min="8.0.0.0" max="11.1.0.0" to that (so the max is 11). Did you ever sort this? This is happening to us too despite trying the registry keys! -
Does anyone know where to obtain the latest version of ActivBoard PX / ActivDriver? (Or have they been updated with a new name since then?). We got new machines for the IWBs we have and the Smartboards were fairly simple but I'm struggling to find any reference to ActivBoard PX online! The one we have at the moment is Px 4.0.7 and the driver 5.7.22.1

Anybody using Visual Studio 2012 in their school? We're having several problems with running it under standard student accounts, the main problem is a 'Waiting for background operation to complete' thing popping up a lot and also random crashing / locking up etc. Just wondered if anyone else had encountered the same issues, usually Microsoft software plays nicely!!!

Here is something useful I found today : http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=clikconce%20for%20chrome&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDAQFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fchrome.google.com%2Fwebstore%2Fdetail%2Fclickonce-for-google-chro%2Feeifaoomkminpbeebjdmdojbhmagnncl%3Fhl%3Den&ei=oblWUuL3Hs7T7AaFkYCoDw&usg=AFQjCNEcYR6hcDa3EkcEZOjqMlTgOlHUKw&sig2=JugHf6TZfE9X_J110dcapg&bvm=bv.53760139,d.ZG4 We have a piece of software that opens via the ClickOnce method, so we've been telling staff to use Internet Explorer as the only option. Now they can use Chrome if they so wish by adding the extension

...Until I stumble across this! Dragged it home as the weather / some kids would have destroyed it otherwise, seems to work fine apart from loud hissing unless the built in speaker volume is set to 0 Checked for any security marking as to any clue where it may have come from but there are none so it looks like finders keepers!

When our Business training centre try to create a document (e.g. Word) with custom margins of 2.3cm left and right and send it to our Ricoh C4000 MFD to print, the left margin is more narrow (About 1.9cm) and the right hand margin wider (About 2.6cm). Any idea what is going on? Tried the PCL6 and PCL5 drivers with little success.

I consider myself to be academically intelligent enough (Well, I obviously had a little slip when I signed the contract to start working in this place!!!) however my first go at GCSE Maths was a D. I did it again the year after at college and easily got into the C bracket. Reason? They did it in a modular format at college so it was basically focus on one subject area e.g. measurements then take exam - Rinse and repeat 4 or 5 times. The modular format was much easier as it allowed more in depth lessons about certain things rather than suddenly jumping from 1+1=2 to Pythagoras!

Having a really weird PCounter problem Set up a new print queue on our Windows 2008 R2 print server, a HP Laserjet M570dn. All fine. Convert the queue into a PCounter port and configure via PCounter with relevant document pricing etc. Now if we send a Microsoft Word 2007 document (A simple one) or a notepad document to the queue PCounter will charge and log the job as if it has been successful, however nothing actually comes out of the printer! However, a standard Windows Test Page, an email printed from Google Chrome and even a slide from a PowerPoint presentation all come out fine! As soon as we revert the port back to a non PCounter port the Word and notepad documents come out fine obviously not going via PCounter though. I'm totally confused and was hoping someone else on here would have had the same issue and have found a resolution! The final twist is we have several HP printer queues set up when the server was built (We mainly use MFD pull printing now) which have the same configuration settings as I cross verified them and those are working fine with Word etc. So maybe a Microsoft update has buggered something up meaning any new queues aren't working?!

I used the wizard provided with the 3DS Studio Max 2012 installer to create a deployment...only problem is rather than created the expected MSI file it has created a folder from which you have to run a 'lnk' shortcut file! Am I doing something wrong? I just want to create a Group Policy to deploy the thing!

I have found a slight problem. Since the proxy settings are done via registry import Google Chrome doesn't seem to pick them up until Internet Explorer is launched at least once. Minor thing really but is there a solution to that?
-
Thank you very much for this, we were scratching our heads as to why the students were getting certificate errors in both Internet Explorer and Chrome but only in certain rooms then it clicked they were generally new PCs or reimaged PCs which obviously had IE10 installed. Then it clicked that our firewall does weird things in an attempt to block the Internet access if the proxy is turned off and it clicked that they probably weren't getting the proxy settings. And of course Chrome uses the proxy settings from Internet Explorer!

What would be the easiest (cheapest!) way to set up a VPN? All we need it to do is for about 5 users to be able to connect to an internal IIS web server / service over their Internet link so they can access the finance ordering system at one of our external sites.
