  1. Advice needed please - Boss doesnt know this is broken, he wouldnt be happy, cause this is the second time this has gone wrong, so need to fix it ASAP We have a server that we call CacheServer This had backup exec 12.5 (I think that was the verison) on it. Has we have backup exec on it we had a scsi card and a tape drive loader connected Also we had some sort of scripting... maybe sheculed tasks I dont know, our support company set this up Gets annoying how they dont tell you how they set things up. With this scripting it backed up our files on our domain controllers (We have 4) It nerver backed up the windows folder through or the pagefile. Also done the admin network servers Looking at the scripting I have found, it used robocopy The finished result would be two folders, circulum and admin folders, it this it would have the server name, then in that would be the c,e etc of the drives it backed up. So for example if a studed deleted a folder of work, I could just copy the file from the cacheserver, has long has its not just been made has it would not have had the time to backup/cache the files/folders Now this server stopped working.... So we had to reload it, luckily we manged to save the batch/script files using a live boot version of linux. I'll upload these files later, see if you can make sense of how it who have been setup, I sort of get how its done Now we even had trouble install Server 2008R2 (Was Server 2003R2 before, thought might has well upgrade has well) First I needed to install the raid drivers, before kept saying it wouldnt install on the partition... After few hours of stress, found a simple fix , just take the usb stick after installing the drivers or plug it in after the setup loads.... After that on the last part of the setup it just crashed and stood till, even left it on all night to see if it would move, nope... Decided to take it to the basic stuff, took out the scsi card, it worked... So scsi card is faulty! So what the bet if we took that out when the server went wrong, we wouldnt have to reload it. Anyway anyone have any sugguestions how to set this up if you understand what I mean with the setup Any better way than using robocopy with im gusing sheculed tasks? Has we reloaded the server we have install Backup Exec 2010, is there any features that does? Never used Backup Exec, so dont really know Has I said i'll upload the files later, only if the cirtix server all of sudden works, has it just stopped working when I was working logged on it. Or tomorrow when I get into work. Has the files are in my network drive, forgot to copy them onto my stick. Thanks alot in advance
  2. SYSMAN Could you do me a favour with the background you made for me Could you try some different colours, dont think 'the head' would want black, will show her through, need a backup to show here too So school colours would be needed really, so eithier blue or yellow or white would be ok Also could you use the font Tahoma and see what the comic sans would look like Thanks in advance if you have the time to do this
  3. Nah given up on this, were going totally windows 7, no need for this any more Thanks for trying to help through! Well not totally just 32 set of old acers in a classroom, and a few old staff acer laptops otherthan that, all computers are compatible with windows 7 (When we get our new computers soon, hopefully next week)
  4. Yer dfs for the win, started to use this now, done the redirected start menus, desktops and profiles on it so far, will make these one replicated has will, incase a the server goes down This was just how it was setup when I started, havent changed it yet, but when I upgrade the server after moving the folders, it will be a dfs share, plus in diffrent folder, every single user in in one folder, will move it so teachers, non teaching staff, admins, year 7, year 8, year 9, year 10, year 11 are sepreate and in the own folders hang on just saw this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/40864-users-network-home-folder-permissions.html on there in has this Mapped as: \\servername\users$\Admin\%username% \\servername\users$\Yeargroup\Intake Year\%username% \\servername\users$\Teaching Staff\%username% \\servername\users$\Non-teaching Staff\%username% \\servername\users$\System Administrators\%username% they have %username% Would that meen I could use that instead of the actual user name on the user home folder link, if so that would slove my problem, has I can use admanger to change it to all the users
  5. nope thats not how its been setup, it setup has the attachment is The user then can get to their documents by eithier through my computer or using a shorcut that goes to the o drive (Has shown in the picture, it is mapped)
  6. You say change the path in active directory but whats the quick way of doing it, dont really want to go throught over 1000 users and change the path`
  7. Is it yet? Looking to get this, I just upgraded our backup server to 2008r2 and forgot that backup exec 12.5 (Think thats the version were licesed for) don't work on 2008r2 So this should be better than backup exec, never have liked symantec programs
  8. thanks mate What I'll do I make a quick msi with the image and the registry fix for the time being until I make the new images Yer will be making new images soon (need to do 4 everytime I make new ones, 2x domain 32bit and 64 bit and 2x workgroup 32bit and 64bit) Need to include office 2010 in both of them, much it much quicker that way But server upgrades are first, upgrading all of them to 2008R2
  9. Ok I need to move the folder where all the students and staff documents are kept, has I need to move this to another location while I upgrade the server from 2003R2 to 200R2 What the best way of doing this? I believe each user has their own security rights for the own area and ofcourse we have admin rights of each folder. How can I move all the folders with the security rights intact? And what whould be the best case of changing the location path in the users properties for their area at the moment we have it set like \\server-1\home$\joebloggs Is there some sort of variable I can use to just make it use for the username for where there folder is located ie there username is spongebob, so there location will be \\server-1\home$\spongbob Thanks in advance Also what the best way of transfering the dhcp service from 2003R2 to 2008R2
  10. thanks sysman looks good! What would the best way of applying the background has the logon screen on all the windows 7 computers we have setup so far? Could make a msi but dont know what part of the registry I would need to change Also one quite annoying problem..... Is it possible to get rid of the empty frame where the users profile picture would normally go? do really want an empty frame, looks stupid, unless you can sort out a matching profile piicture? (prefere it not to be there fullstop)
  11. bump........
  12. Great job with the logos everyone Wonder if anyone care to try and update our one if you can think of any think to do with it? Our one is pretty good already to be honest, just seeing if anyone can make it better Theres a compressed folder with all the versions of the logo we have had ----------------------------------------------------------------- Also can someone possiblly make me a 2 different backgrounds? (1024x768) One we have now is over two years old, so it needs a change (Upoaded this one two) One would be for the windows 7 logon screen (So need to account for the user account picture box, unless this can be disabled??) Second one would be for the students and staff desktop background Thanks in Advance

I would say you should be able to both of them
  14. bt business direct is cheaper (Where we ordered)
  15. I just put this in for a order yesturday, so will let you know, if this works, we may make all our projectors wireless this way
  16. Ok seemed to have got this working, believe it or not it was caused by have a backslash at the end of the link Applied to all the staff abd students at the end of the day, so hopefully we wont end any problems, but im still not happy with it at the moment, still too slow logging in Ok some questions 1- How would I make this a local man profile instead of a network man profile, so it loads quicker, has it seems to be it is still slow 2- Why does the xp man profile come up with the configuring box setting new settings ie outlook (Think it only done two or three settings) 3- Problery a no to this.... Has you know when a user logs on, the user get a user folder, in the users folder.. Is it somehow possibe for the computer to be set so it uses a certain mantory profile and not create a user folder and the mantory profile folder... So basiclly the only thing that happens if folder redirection and group policy settings 4- Instead of using group policy to apply restrictions for the users, would it be possible to find a long list of registry entries that I could apply to a man account. Just seem stupid that the restrictions keeps geting applied everytime a user logs in, might has well have the restriction built into the man account, if you understand that? Want to logging in quick has possible. Thanks In Advance
  17. Ok I get getting on the windows 7 computers 'logged in with a temporay profile etc...' What would cause this problem? Way I set this up Clean Install XP (No programs) Clean Install Windows (No programs) Setup, Windows media player, ie8 settings, icon view settings, start menu settings, background Both were done by the copy profile feature (Had to copy the windows 7 profile I customised to the default profile folder, so it would allow me to copy it, has you can only copy the deafult profile) Permimited user I used 'everyone' Shared folder has got everyone has read only, also put the groups students and staff for the folder permission, read only again. It is not a DFS folder, would that matter? Xp profiles seems to work fine (Weird that I still get a box with it setting things up, think it was only the one thing it sets up through) And windows 7 of course logs in with a temp account Anyone know what would be the problem? Also loaded the hive in regedit and added the students and staff groups in it, that made no difference) Please Anyone? This is getting on my nerves here
  18. have you tried this printer on windows 7? windows may have driver included, or windows update may pick it up... Have a go if you havent!
  19. Umm quitte like that idea! Still your still get virus and still have to maintain it
  20. Seems to be a good idea, you can get wireless usb sticks, doesnt have to be internal, so normal wifi for internet and network connection. And wusb card for the video connection... So need to find something that plugs into the projector end that make the vga to wireless usb Any one seen any thing products that does this? Also we have a new plasma in out new reciption in our school. We use a netbook for each plasma and use netshow and a powerpoint file to update the screens. Problem with this is that there are no main plugs. So we cant use anything video extenders or anything that would take power. We do have a ethernet connection we can use that plugs into our switch of course. We arent allowed to have any wiring visable or any trucking. Any ideas with this one guys? Problem with vga extenders is you need the ethernet cable to connect to the other vga extender (Could use power over ethernet for power), so thats wires, so thats no good. Cant using a wusb or wirless vga extender because that will require mains power. We will need to put the netbook under the reception desk, about 5 meters away.
  21. damn new version looks much better! i'll have to get ours upgraded, scared of breaking it through lol
  22. Damn! Why release the keys for without the downloads, that's pretty pointless!
  23. What laptop model is this? That may help
  24. Do you have links on the site through to download it yet?
  25. Im not sure but when you install java 1.6 update 19 from the exe it install another msi call additional media support of somethin like thta (You cant see this in add/remove, only from the windows installer folder, you can find that easy by you the details icon view and having the subject information field, to find the msi) Not sure if that msi installs if you install it the msi thats extract from the msi, so this may be the case with auto updater is still enabled on your method above, so seems to have changes from a few releases ago, of no one has noicted this. So somehow we would need to uninstall that msi. Not sure how we would do that through. Has with quicktime, could someone make me the MSTs that are needed with the lastest version, would be extremlly gratefull (I have tried doing this myself serveral times, just cant get it to work) We are having to use an really old version for some program to work (6.5)
