Putting Staff Laptops Onto Domain
pritchardavid replied to pritchardavid's topic in Network and Classroom Management
New staff sever? What that extually gonna do then? Some intresting ideas there, have to talk to the boss about getting the laptops on the domain, see what he thinks Maybe let them have a local admin account or a restricted one, with maybe some local group policy restrictions (can these restrictions be copied easy to other computers?), and also the laptop would be mapped with there network drive which is also offline, so there files are backup on our server (No teachers are doing backups, it it has become a problem, of some losing work now, hense one of our secience teacher lost all there work because the hard drive went fault, and we have tried every way to get the work back, but its impossible) But on windows 7, I dont know how to back the logon screen to default to a local account, is that possible (Know it was on windows xp, because I have done that before) -
If you want free, I would say ashampoo burning studio or better get the paid verison for more features (can't remember if the free one done bluray discs if thats what you want to do)

installation problems using WAMP

hehe worrys mate -
How many of you have staff laptops on the domain? Thinking maybe this would be the best bet. The school now want us to put impero onto staff laptops, for esafey Now putting this on staff laptops, will require us to keep the latest version installed, which we normally do through active directory, using a msi. Defo needs to stay update, because we are using version 3, we at the moment is in devlopment at release candiate. Now that advantages of putting the laptops on the domain is good - wsus will work on, so the laptops 'SHOULD' say update - can deploy the newest flash, shockwave, adobe reader, java , impero, smartbord, interwrite, anything msi - can get the staff work backup, using offline files to their netowork folder?, has none of them backup Disavantages - when we deploy newer versions, staff will have to wait for it to all install - when the wsus updates the laptop, teacher may have to restart there laptop both advantage and disavantage - Staff has restrictions what they can do with active directory, so they will not be able to install any software without us installing it for them, so they cant install alot of rubbish on their laptop, which may cause us more work, which also mean if they can logon to there laptop at home, they can unselect the proxy settings, which mean they c ant get on the internet Not sure stuff How will the teacher be able to logon to the laptop at home? Currentlly staff and students have mantory profiles, which are set to remove when they logoff, to stop the annpoying, cant load profile service error when they logon (Only set this for windows 7 atm)

installation problems using WAMP
pritchardavid replied to garthswest's topic in EduGeek Joomla 1.5 Package
Lol I didnt say that, i said try 5.2, which your using has you said above Not saying it matters but I prefere to use xampp, when I used that with this, never had a problem, expect from the latest version because it had php 5.3. Had to use the next older version that came with php 5.2 I reckon you should try that maybe -

Caching/Backing Up Fies URGENT!
pritchardavid replied to pritchardavid's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Ok files uploaded Sorry forgot to do this, with being busy upgrading one of our server yesturday to 2008R2 I did clear the logs on the files, but did leave all the information at the top in case you need that info It not me that needs to tell the boss, it my supervisor, but doesnt want to say anything Actually the other day he was talking about having a cloud backup, dont like that idea, would be too slow to backup! Would robocopy even work correclly on 2008R2? has this was running on 2003R2 before On one more server to upgrade, so robocopy would be hosted on 2008R2 and backup 4 2008R2 servers and also 3 admin server that run 2003R2 on the admin network -

two secs i'll upload them, forgot to do that, also found a document on how it runs Nah were sure the scsi care has gone fauty, no worrys about that now, been quoted £160 for a new one... We have to get that ordered next week, so we can get our tape backups running again We have been told our licence has expired for backup exec anyway, so were good to get a new licence for the new version No scripts, I havent resetup yet, not sure extually how to put it back, ie what version of robocopy would I need, where to put the exe etc Like I said is there a better way than using robocopy? Whats this symantec active protection or something that come with backup exec disc? Does that do anything like that? -
Damn, I'll havwe to speak to how support company then (a2z) I know we have a Volume Licence with software assurance for windows, office etc, not sure whats included in that, about all I know

thanks Managed to look kat the microsoft termial licensing console and it seems we have an open licence, just that mean they are good to go on server 2008R2? Just found the Citrix Licening MSC Product Model Type Subscription Advantage Date Expiration Date Installed Citrix Presentation Server Advanced Concurrent User Retail 10/07/08 Permanent 65 Citrix Start-up License Server System * Permanent 5,000 Not quite sure why we have that many licences We only have two citrix servers and about 1100-1200 Students (Not that they will ever log on all at the same time, citrix server is only used so staff and students can get on the school system from home, not in any classrooms or anything) No one barly logs on it, no one is on at the time of writing now and checking everynight, luckly to get one or two people on it

Ok anothber question What security rights to I set has the main folder? ie the share will be \\FQDN\Year7 shared from E:\Year7 This is for the users documents It seems I had to put in the group 'Everyone' and allow write and read permissons, has with just read it would not, let me save a edited txt file or make any new files This seems weird to be has the test user had full permission in their user folder Does this mean I have to 'Everyone' group to full read and write? What to make sure all the security right are correct when moving back all the files I moved over during the upgrade to 2008R2

Some Questions for you guys Our Domain is ockendon.thurrock.sch.uk If I was to use a DFS Share I have to type the whole domain name in, but on the servers I seem to just be able to type in just '\\ockendon'. Is there any way I can chose what name I want to use, ie just server or even ockendon, has the full domain name is too long to for staff to use (They will forget it) ------------------- Another question is about active directory. I would like to cleanup all the dead/not used accounts, when I mean that I mean like the users in the builtin folder and the built in user folder and also the administrator folder. What would be the best way of doing this? Any easy way? Think the domain was upgraded from 2000 and now of course 2008, so after all this time there must be accounts that windoes roles or third party programs we have not got installed anymore, that we can get rid off I have upload exported list, see if you can see if I can get rid of any Or any better ideas would be nice Thanks

Agreed go for Office 2010, only downside, it needs activating, but then again you can use a mak code if needed

Sorry to be a pain mate, just to try is it possible to see if what it would look like in mixed colours, not sure what i would look like, gussing here ie white and blue or white and yellow, etc what every colour mix you think would be good, suppose black will be ok if its with another colour so colours again, eithier - blue, yellow, white and black if with another colour If you can, once you done that the mixed colours, can you send me the files to my email (Including the once you just done) so I can see it bigger and the correct resloution email is [email protected] Cheers mate, they do look good, stil prefere the black tbh, hopefully see will agree to that one, doubt it, cause its not the school colours Thinking your font you chosse may look better, I'll let you chosse, dont bothered about what my line manger said, its not down to him

Ok we have two citrix servers that uses the web interface that students can logon from home Not extually sure what the second one does, has everytime I have logged in the citrix server I have always been on the first one, Its like user arent logged into the second one, or what that only happen if only a certain amound of users is using it? Would have throught it would banlancethe user between both server for better performance. These servers run 2003R2, can't remember what citrix version it is, will look tomorrow, can logon to it at the moment, seems it has gone down Now how does citrix work with licening? Do we get free updates, or do we have to buy a new version? is there citrix cals? Does the citrix use rds cals? If so do we need to upgrade that (We have volume licening with SA) Now has Server 2008R2 has better RDS feature and support, do we actually need citrix, could we just use RDS? Had went other people set things up, make me not know the system and how to set it up, at least our support company could have show us how to set it up when they was setting it up. Thanks in advance:)
