  1. Sounds like maybe the drive or the PCB that connects the drive to the USB is corrupted/broken somehow. Have you tried plugging it into another PC? Also you could try removing the drive from its enclosure and you will find just a normal 2.5" or a 3.5" SATA hard disk inside there - just remove that from its attachement to the USB PCB and then (if you have it) use a SATA kit to connect it to your PC or alternatively open up your PC case and plug in direct.
  2. Hey there all, Are there any more takers for this course? If so send me a PM and I'll get you the details James
  3. Good to hear it worked in the end! Personaly I hate all the messing around that needs to be done with SSLs and its why we get them on a 5 year basis!
  4. The biggest thing to check is to see if your editing application can uses the CPU or the GPU for its rendering. Windows Live Movie Maker uses the CPU for processing so the higher the clock speed and the more cores the better. Something like a AMD Phenom II X6 (six cores for about £125) should work a treat or if you need to save on cash then a AMD Athlon II X4 (quad cores for about £75).
  5. Anything that gets the job done I guess!
  6. Have a good old kick and scream at your LEA - involve your SMT as well if required because there are a lot of things that you can't do with your school (VPN/HAP+/ect) without punching holes in your LEA firewall all of which are for the betterment of T&L so as long as you can make your system secure (TMG/ISA Server ect) then they shouldn't have a foot to stand on in stoping you.
  7. You might have the problem described here then - Certification Authority Maintenance Give the repair store command a go (at the very bottom of the Microsoft part of the article) you can find the certs hex key by going into its properties.
  8. Personaly I'd scrap it get a DL165 G7 or a DL385 G7 for about £1,500/£3,000 with 24 GB of RAM using DDR3 - 1333mhz instead of 667mhz making it soo much faster with the RAM. As your new company suggests some local storage would work a treat - 15k SAS drives for SQL and Exchange and 7.2k SATA for general data and the 8 core AMDs will eliminate any chance of the processor being over taxed.
  9. Did you create the cert request on the same server as TMG? If not then import the cert onto the server that you created the request on then right click and select export - you should have the option to include the private key and it will require you to select a password. Then import this exported key onto your TMG server (again enter the password) and this should show as a valid key. Even if you created the cert request on the TMG server try this anyway as any key that you get from a provider won't include the private key and so it needs to be mashed into the cert to make it work.
  10. These might help some people- HP ProLiant DL320 G5 Server series*-* HP ProLiant DL320 G5 Server - Overview - c00775197 - HP Business Support Center
  11. Have you got the processor details, speeds of the hard drives and the HP generation numbers as well (e.g. the latest is the G7)?
  12. We use Live@Edu for our Exchange so all off site - the one thing you do want to keep in mind with Exchange is its best to use local storage so although 20 users shouldn't tax your server much anymore will be a hog. The R300 is OK for virtulisation in the sense that its processor supports Virtulisation however the servers Motherboard only supports 24Gb of RAM - by comparision the HP DL165 can take upto 256Gb and running virtual machines is all about having more than enough RAM to run all your services. I think your real bottleneck is in the processor (if you post the specs of the CPU it'll be easy to tell in an instant) but if you are running SQL and Exchange that Drobo won't be helping either.
  13. Could you post the full specs for your R300? Having a look through the email though and the specs on the Dell website the R300 does appear to be very similar to the HP DL120 which is designed for single use applications (say running a backup server or a low end web server) not for multiple purpose tasks and certainly not running VMs. If you have a browse around here you will find both lovers and haters of Drobo as well – mostly (as far as I can tell) being the haters though with similar reports to what you are getting about network bottlenecks and drop outs. Personally we run 2x HP DL165 G7s which both have 4x2TB SAS drives in which appears to be very similar to what your new company is suggesting and this setup works perfectly for us with rarely seeing anything more than 10% processor usage. So in my opinion yes your first company got things seriously wrong.
  14. I've got a AMD 6950 2GB and I have't yet been able to max it out on any game when just using a single monitor so I wouldn't expect that you would need something quite that powerful. You might also want to take a look at the new AMD Fusion APUs - the quad core ones are powerful enough to runs games on without a dedicated graphics card (because the processor also includes a GPU that is muuuuch more powerful than Intel onboard graphics).
  15. We work on the stance that we will provide 'all resonable levels' of web filtering within the school however before any student is given a school PC for use at home (for whatever reason) the parents are required to countersign a AUP that states that outside of school the school is not responsible for any web usage. This way the onus falls on the parents.
  16. Which type of VPN are you using (PPTP/SSTP)? Can you ping your outlook server? Can you access any other servers on the VPN?
  17. Hate to say it but - contact RM support? Also what kinds of sites are playing up with the flash uploader?
  18. The only real differance is that Hyper-V server dosn't include virtulisation rights and 'normal' server 2008 does with Standard getting you the rights to run 1 VM, Enterprise giving you the rights to run 4 VMs and Datacentre the rights to run unlimited. In that way if you are looking at deploying new servers on top of the ones you are making VMs out of then you should look at getting the required Server 2008 R2 cals, however if you are just VMing existing servers then you can run that off of Hyper-V server with no worries. Some people will use Hyper-V server (or use Sevrer Core) and buy the CALs anyway (if they are deploying new servers) as Hyper-V server requires less overall system resources to run as it dosn't have a GUI.
  19. You should have a look at something called Distributed file system in the Enterprise (and heigher) versions of Server 2008 R2. AD and GPOs should sync anyway reguardless of the edition of Windows Server you have but using DFS would allow you to sync your shared documents between the sites. One place to start learning more- DFS Step-by-Step Guide for Windows Server 2008
  20. Just having a little fun (one of those things which brightens the day) and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of the right html code? What we have is our TMG 2010 block page comes up when students try and access a site they shouldn’t – as the page can be customised we have our logo plus some details on the page. What I wanted to do is embed an Easter egg in the page (for fun) –something to the effect of the student has to press a key combination and a picture of Gandalf will appear (maybe in place of our logo) with the text ‘you shall not pass’ below. As you can tell it’s one of those days where there is very little to do! I’ve figured out I need to use the on action command but don’t know how I would go about actually using it let along changing the picture? So could any educoders out there help? Please see below our current block page.
  21. If you are looking at a rack server then do you accualy already have a rack? (and lets be in the clear - a rack for servers is a whole lot bigger (in depth) than a comms rack for network switches and so on). Even a short one (15U) can easily cost £400-£600 which if you add that to the total cost of your servers you might as well just go and max out some normal tower servers. Many secondarys these days have rack mounted servers but that is to support a whole lot more users as well as aditional kit (large network switches), CCTV and the likes.
  22. Out of intrest what did you go for the server spec in the end? For your VPN it depends on the type that your LEA uses - you may find yourself needing a Layer 3 network switch but either way your LEA support team is the place to go.
  23. Have a look at Live@Edu and see if it meets your needs - it cuts out a large amount of the headache of looking after exchange and is free to schools.
  24. We've got AD, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, RADIUS (for Wi-Fi), WDS and file storage on the following (at one of our new install Primarys)- HP ML110 G6 Intel Xeon X3430 (4x2.40 Ghz) 4GB DDR3 (option to go to 8Gb) 2x1TB HDD in RAID 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 3 Year Warranty One of the key things was backup as well - we use Windows Server backup onto a iSCSI box (located off the main building) with 2TB of storage running dailys. Only cost about £1,000 which was wayyy better than what RM were asking for (£3,000 with only 1 year warranty and thats before CC4 setup costs as well!)
  25. Do let us know if it works though
