  1. Cheers Just wait until the summer when we get some made up with our new SSD kit
  2. I've got a fair few videos about thin clients on our YouTube chanel - Kanal von FitzharrysITDept - YouTube We're Oxfordshire though but if you have any questions do send me a PM.
  3. Server 2008 R2 Editions guide says DFS-R isn't included - Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Editions (bottom of the page in a PDF) so whats going on there I don't know!
  4. We do everything through the Microsoft Lync client and desktop sharing - its limited in that you cant use it to connect to PCs without end user input and forget about using it if a UAC prompt is involved but as a very quick and easy option using software we already actively use it makes sense
  5. By Junior I assume you mean Primary? In previous threads of a similar nature I've been suggesting a HP ML110 G7 server, Quad Core CPU, 8GB RAM (min) and 2x1TB drives and the same would seem to apply here as well. You don't need anything too fancy in the hardware as it won't be hammered much. Its also easy enough to upgrade any HP to a 3 year warranty - just include it in your list of required specs when you put it out to tender. If you are looking at some serious redundancy look into Microsoft DFS-R in Server 2008 R2, it allows for storage mirroring so if one server does go down the other picks up all of the storage requests (you do need Enterprise lics for this though).
  6. Anything wrong with YouTube? Could even get the videos hosted as unlisted so that only those with the tags saw them.
  7. Expression Encoder 4 can do what you ask - there is a batch processing thingy in the SDK although its not something I have ventured into.
  8. The network managers line manager calls me a RAM addict – surely nothing to do with the way that every project I propose requires the purchase of copious amounts of the stuff
  9. #1 - No problem AD on Server 2008 R2 will work fine with both Windows 7 and XP #2 - At our primarys we created individual domain accounts for Years 2-6 with a set and locked password (password sheet in the staff shared drive to check up on if needed) FSU and Year 1 have a single domain account with no password. Make sure you tick the box which blocks password resets though to make sure this works! #3 - Never seen this problem before - on occasion we've had a problem with Windows 7 where the PC forgets the cached credentials but it happens once in a blue moon. #4 - We do the same - create a folder redirection with only read permissions to a folder on your server with all the application shortcuts in. #5 - Wish I knew to! Although if you have a play around with the printer deployment tools in print manager you should get by well enough. #6 - This is what you want to read - Folder Redirection Overview easy enough to setup just make sure you stick to best pratice or it will break for sure. #7 - All handled by Group Policy and ordered using Active Directory Organisational units. Lay out your directory so that you have -Top Level --Domain PCS ---Room 1 ---Room 2 ---IT Class Room --Domain Users ---Staff ---Students This will allow you to apply policys at various levels using the group policy management console. #8 - Don't expect it to work between Windows XP and Windows 7 but user profile redirection will handle most of what you need. Any ideas as to how many users/PCs you are supporting as well? Would give an idea to server spec.
  10. Sounds like me at the moment but on a 3x greater scale! I'd be intrested to hear why you are looking at UPSs in comms cabs though?
  11. Dell and Supermicro should be the ones you are looking at As I understand Dell are racking up the discounts at the moment as well.
  12. Have a look at the IE9 network capture tool - Using Internet Explorer Developer Tools Network Capture to see whats going on when you click on the link - just trying on my own wordpress site (self hosted) quite a few files get downloaded when you click on the media button - as others have said I would bet your proxy is getting in the way.
  13. Already have sent out an email and posted it on our Intranet anywho who asks about it will be directed right to it
  14. RM is mentioned - no go for me regardless of the money
  15. To be honest - why does it matter if staff are required to sign in or not? I think the fire argument is quite a valid one in the sense that if people sign in/out its easy enough to say that yep the building is clear. Adding on top of that many businesses will require staff sign in for their own purposes of audit (and to track down those who might be regularly late (even if by a few minutes)) and why shouldn’t this apply to the education sector as well?
  16. We have a 'shout box' on our SharePoint site (which serves as a staff internal homepage) - allows staff to post any random messages they want up there. Theres also a offical notices box for more important things.
  17. Thread revival This one is back from 2007 before I even left college.
  18. If by 2011 you are refering to Small Buisness Server 2011 its just Server 2008 R2 but with the same extra features that you had with previous versions of SBS - as such any driver written for 2008 R2 should work fine with it.
  19. Am I the only one who thinks its kinda like a Thin Client but the applications are hosted by Google instead of on your local system? Might be missing out something here though!
  20. Server 2008 R2 will run on praticly anything - the HP Micro Server is a great example with a 1.3ghz AMD Athlon dual core (there is a upgraded version out now). If you do only run the bare minmium on your server (AD/DNS/DHCHP/File Server (no SQL)) then you would be fine (the 4GB upgrade wouldn't go a miss though!). Do be careful to make sure your existing RAID card and SCSI card are compatible with Server 2008 R2 first though.
  21. Last time I fixed a eprofile problem with Windows 7 it was due to the date/time settings not being in English UK - that error does sound familiar to this but it may not be the same one.....
  22. Another thing to look into is whats your ping speeds like between the PCs/server and is there any packet loss?
  23. Its a Windows Vista/7 only feature and as such it dosn't exist on Server 2003 so nope not a thing you can do
  24. I prefer to have an option for both a local client and a VLE edition. Local client should be distributed by a Online ISO/ZIP folder but above all if I have a 100Mb/s connection I want to be able to download at 100Mb/s - all to many I am sitting waiting for a download because the company decided to host it on their own web servers instead of hosting it with a decent CDN (Amazon S3/Windows Azure). Local client should be installable by MSI but even better is easy compatibility with the top application virtualisation packages (App-V/XenApp ect). I'm fine with the VLE version being a cut down of the local edition (less fancy features and so on) but above all else it should be lightweight to allow students on slower internet connections to not have to wait a year for it to load.
  25. Oh also on your Windows 7 PCs again look in Programs and Features and see if Remote Differential Compression is enabled - if so remove it In the long run you should look to upgrade to the same Server version of Windows as the clients that you are using (so Vista goes with 2008 and 7 goes with 2008 R2).
