.pac files and horrible web proxy sites.
nile_c replied to itwasntme's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Which SmoothWall are we talking about here? There are a couple of ways to skin this particular cat. -
Whilst I agree with the comments above, I think the kids' "search quality metrics" differ from our own slightly...

Couple of comments: * Dogpile does not currently have its 'Heavy' level of filtering turned on by Smoothwall. With your comments in mind, I will look into making that possible. * Deep URL filtering will be active on image results. You may wish to block Unmoderated imagehosts (a new category) to combat some of the more risque results. * Naturally, there is the option to block completely...

Windows 7 activation through a Smoothwall proxy
nile_c replied to Ric_'s topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Once you setup the auth. exclusion it will treat any access to those domains as "Unuathenticated IPs". Because there is no way to tell who is behind the request once we skip authentication. You will generally have the "Unauthenticated IPs" group blocked from the internet, or using a quite restricted policy. The next step is to create an 'Allow' rule so that unauthenticated clients can get to the excluded domains. Based on this thread, the relevant domains for Win7 activation are: activation.sls.microsoft.com go.microsoft.com (In addition to any others already configured for windows/office updates etc.)- 24 replies

Windows 7 activation through a Smoothwall proxy
nile_c replied to Ric_'s topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thanks paul_1989. Comparing your dump with my own from the other day I've found the problem. The activation process accesses 'go.microsoft.com' first and then gets bounced with a 302 to activation.sls.microsoft.com So, we also need to include go.microsoft.com to the auth exclusions and make sure it is allowed. Hopefully that is the last one :-)- 24 replies

I havn't yet seen this ballot screen, but blocking browserchoice.eu at your internet filter should prevent this links from appearing.

Well, it tells us that the traffic might not even be hitting your SmoothWall. Do you fancy running a tcpdump for extra fun?- 24 replies

My (original-style) Acer Aspire One used to run the Win 7 betas and RC very nicely with 1.5GB of RAM.

Windows 7 activation through a Smoothwall proxy
nile_c replied to Ric_'s topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi guys, In addition to the usual Microsoft domains for "Do not auth", I found you also need the following: activation.sls.microsoft.com Please let me know whether that works. EDIT: Forgot to add, you need to allow the domain too.- 24 replies

Antivirus Add-on for Smoothwall.

ls -l /var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/ What is there? -

nile_c replied to FN-GM's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Excellent. Once you perform those three moves (mv) all the files will be in their proper locations. They will no longer exist underneath your /tmp/. Once they are all moved, you can then run /tmp/install-dgav properly. -

nile_c replied to FN-GM's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
install-dgav is a symbolic link that points to /var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/install.pl That file currently resides in /tmp/var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/install.pl because we started in /tmp. This is the cause of the "command not found" error. You can remedy the situation by moving the extracted files into the expected locations: mv /tmp/tmp/* /tmp mv /tmp/usr/* /usr mv /tmp/var/* /var EDIT: When I keep saying 'symbolic link' read: shortcut. -

I would do what computer_expert suggested in post #32 and start from the beginning. Once the archive is extracted in the right place, the install should work as planned. EDIT: Yes there may be some leftover files from the archive, if you had extracted it in your home directory for example. Any junk in your /tmp will be purged at some point in the future. -

nile_c replied to FN-GM's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
When you originally extracted everything the '-C /' flag should cause everything to be extracted from a base location of '/'. This is the very top of your filesystems tree. Your '/tmp/install-dgav' file from the archive is actually a symbolic link. It says "I'm not here, look over THERE" In this case, the "THERE" is '/var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/install.pl' If the archive was extracted correctly, this file should be present and correct. You should be able to run it directly like so: perl /var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/install.pl If the file is not found at this point, then either the archive was damaged or it wasn't extracted into the root '/' directory. -

nile_c replied to FN-GM's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Also, install-dgav is a symlink to '/var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/install.pl' Because it isn't relative, then if you havn't untarred to '/' then it will get rather confused. Check everything is where it should be: ls -l /var/smoothwall/mods/filtering/dgav/ -

There's probably possibly a permissions problem, but you screenshot has cropped out the goodies :-D Try this: sh ./path/to/install-dgav -
Lovely! Thanks for the warning Dom_ That should be in your SmoothWall updates at the usual time :-)

What Web Filtering Software does everyone use?
nile_c replied to runcmd's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
This site is blocked as a URL under the 'Online games' category. As a belt-n-braces approach, the helicopter game SWF is also caught by the flash filter. Are you the chap who was being helped by our Support Team last week with something similar? -
Great news, we suspected it was something like that. If you have no luck getting the upstream safe search to your liking you could ask for it removed and do it locally. Or, if the provider's is working fine then leave it off on the Smoothwall. In any case, it's best to use just the one. PS: 'vss' is preferable to 'active' - it hides the safesearch configuration options.

@amvs: i think I may be the 'somebody' tom was referring too. :-D Let's cut out the middleman - you can PM me directly!

Smoothwall - Top Phishing Country problem
nile_c replied to Macinator's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi, Support have seen this issue today and yesterday for both ".nl" and ".us" TLDs. Presumably there has been a surge in Phishing volume from those domains in recent weeks, pushing them up the ranks. We do apply some exceptions however, and those TLDs have been added to the list. Everything should be back to normal by tomorrow. Cheers! -
Yes, you can upstream your local Smoothwall through another proxy. You will find a couple of people here on EduGeek who (are forced to) use this arrangement :-)
