School Remote Access - How do you do it?

Which issues specifically? Not really clear on that page what you mean. -
Automount public SMB share on mac for all users
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Nope. Cannot add an OU to a group. Only individual users. Also, I don't have Workgroup Manager as don't have OSX Server (just stand-alones). D'oh edit: Just found a server admin tool download that I should be able to load onto standalone... Thanks again James - sometimes a gentle nudge in the right direction helps -
Automount public SMB share on mac for all users
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Aaaaaah. Just seen the 'Add Group' bit. Assuming I can create a group and add users from AD and then assign the mount to the group - that should work. I'll have a play now. Thanks for the nudge... -
Automount public SMB share on mac for all users
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Hi James, thanks for the reply. I know how to do that, but that is on an individual user basis. As in, I would need to do that to each individual user. There are over 200. I wanted something a bit more generic. Something that mounts to the shared drive regardless of who has logged in. Cheers Ben -

School Remote Access - How do you do it?

We are using RD Web access (with remoteApp) here. Very good indeed. But, you will need to spend some cash on a server with some grunt. Ben -
Hi guys, Sorry if this isn't the right area, I have tried searching but couldn't find anything. I have a bunch of macs connected to my windows domain. I have it up and running on active directory, everything is fine and dandy in terms of login/authentication (I think it was easier to connect the mac to the domain than a windows pc - but that's another matter...). It also pulls over the home drive and mounts that. I will have anything upwards of 200 users logging on to these machines. Is there a way I can automount an SMB (windows shared drive) automatically for anybody that logs in? I can get it working by mounting manually - but i'd like it to be automatic. As in, user logs in and drive mounts to the public folder automatically. I would also like to add a link to a webpage on all desktops... I can't see how to do this either. Thanks a bunch and I look forward to your replies... Ben

Part Time Technician in Hitchin, Hertfordshire
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in Educational IT Jobs
I'm not necessarily looking for loads of experience. A basic (but not too basic) understanding of IT would be great. More than happy to train 'on the job' as it were. So, not sure if there is anybody doing a college course etc.. that it might appeal to... -
Hi guys and gals, Finally been given the nod to look for a part time technician. Hours to suit really, either a few hours a day or a few full days a week. General duties will be quite broad. The applicant will get hands on with everything from break/fix of computers, networking (wireless, cabled, software). I am more than happy to let the right person have access to domain level bits and bobs too when trusted. I can throw in some phone work... plus the mundane stuff like toner replacements and 'my smartboard isn't working' type affairs. Free lunch... that's got to be the decider. We are a relatively small school, running a vanilla network in an MS flavour. Please PM me as not sure on rules of giving email address in this post. Cheers Ben

Anybody? I want to be able to point the finger at a particular MAC address(s) and say you have downloaded x amount of data. Must be somebody out there that has done similar or knows how to? Cheers Ben -
We use Danwood for our contract. On the face of it, it doesn't look like it saves much money - but then again, we did get a load of brand new kit 'thrown' in. Plus, any real problems - I just ring and they come and sort it (usually same day). If you want figures, i'd be happy to PM you with details. Ben

Hi guys, I have a small wireless network with about 4 WAPs. These are connected directly to the router (with firewall and content filtering). I want to be able to point the finger at a certain MAC address and say you have downloaded x amount of data. I can drop a small mini pc onto the network either cabled or wireless (in a secret location) to assist. What software (preferably free) would be best to achieve this? I have cross-referenced MAC address' on the router table to that in the router log and can see where they are going, but not what exactly is being downloaded or how much. Also, not all device names show up in the table. The 'culprits' have been warned by all manner of staff including SMT and the head. Yet, they still insist on downloaded in excess of 165GB over a month. Please bear in mind there is only ever around 15 of them at most. Cheers

We use both Misco and IT Index. Haven't had a problem with either. Only thing with IT Indes is my account manager rings or emails every other day. Gets annoying. But prices from both are great...and you can sometimes bounce them off each other to get a cheaper deal. Ben

Sorry for the resurrect, but does this standard include sizes/measurements/dimensions of the installation of ceiling mounted projectors, specifically the recommended distance from ceiling/floor. Are there any stipulations if the room is of an odd size (ie. raised floor and lowered false ceiling - a relatively small room in height). Cheers

Hi guys, A couple of questions for people running MS NAP; 1) Can it be installed on the domain controller? 2) Does it work with devices running OSx or mobile platforms? 3) In terms of setting it up - hassle or easy? 4) When a device is 'authenticated', where does it pick up an IP? Can I set all 'foreign' devices to pick up from a different range/scope? Cheers in advance, Ben

Delete DHCP users every hour - batch file?
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
OK great, thanks guys. I'm aware of all the issues, believe me. You know how it is when you inherit somebody else's mess... and then are too scared to touch it in fear of it going bang big time! Ta Ben -
Delete DHCP users every hour - batch file?
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Long convoluted reason. But, there are 25 ip's available. These get filled up pretty quick as there are more than 25 users that might need to join. I have set the lease time to 1 hour, but that doesn't seem as effective as manually deleting them from the list. -
Hi guys, I have a server setup literally just for DHCP on a small scope (server 2003). I'd like to delete the users from the list every hour or so. What is the best method? I've looked a NETSH commands but can't see anything obvious. But I am stupid. Cheers in advance Ben

Exactly tech monkey. But hey ho, not everybody thinks the same. Fair enough to that I say. Each to there own. But it's definitely worth considering. I've been given an extra 7+ years with my mum. Although the disease has recently started attacker her new liver. No chance of retransplant this time due to age and other underlying issues. But hey - it was an extra 7 years If any of you signed up a while back, on your driving licence for example, it might be worth registering on the site again. The transition to electronic documentation wasn't great. Plus, if you have moved house or got married/changed your name, your details will need updating! Ta very much all of you I have no connection to this cause other than being directly affected by it and subsequently meeting T and hearing about what she is trying to achieve. Ben
