Alumni Software - What do you use?
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
We do currently use PASS so there is a benefit there. Although, it is fairly pricey. -
Hi guys, We are looking at upgrading our dated access database to something a bit more modern. What are you guys using out there? You can't beat real end-user techy recomendations. We are looking at Blackbaud Raisers Edge and WebAlumnus from WCBS at the moment. I am not 100% happy with either so would like some real-world advice from the guys using it - or using something else. Ta very muchly in advance Ben

MAJOR ISSUE - HELP ASAP - BACKUP EXEC QUESTION
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
I just recatalogued. It is not coming up with Fridays date as an option. Basically, when I finally got it into windows this morning, I was sorting out the backup mess and it started to run last nights/todays backup with the same tape in. I stopped it as soon as I realised, it did one folder and 4 files. Is it that that has buggered it? Should I try downloading a trial version of the latest backupexec? -
MAJOR ISSUE - HELP ASAP - BACKUP EXEC QUESTION
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
What are the implications and benefits? Will I be able to partially restore a ailed backup job? Sorry - not too hot on backupexec. Ben -
Hi guys, FILE SEVER GO BYE BYE. Up all night on a rescue mission. All fairly successful apart from; Thursdays full backup all ok, no problems. Friday failed (due to the server issue). The backup job comprises of backing up 3 drives. It failed on one so the entire job is classed as failed. But, it did successfully backup the files i'm wanting to get back urgently. But as the 'job failed', it doesn't give me the option to restore from it. Is there a way I can just restore the successful drive even though the 'job' failed? Does that make sense? Server 2003. BackupExec 11d on a 1Tb SAS tape. This bit is funny...it went tits up on the final reboot after dcpromo. Demoted it from AD, rebooted to copy over data to new server...only it didn't reboot. 8 hours buggering around it boots. The new server sitting on bench ready to move across today. The little bugger knew I was going to kill it - so it jumped before I had the chance! If I can get that extra day back it would be super bloody duper. Thanks in advance. A tired Ben

Electronic Permission Slips and Documents
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Super. I was already looking at Adobe so that will be the best option here. The pdf is already going out by email, so it's a simple fill in and return to sender jobby. I just wiped a reinstalled the sharepoint server to use as a file server. No sharepoint for us anymore! Cheers Ben -
Hi guys, Our lovely Marketing manager has decided to look at electronic permission slips (as in, she wants it to happen so I have to make it happen). We currently send out forms as a PDF via our school messaging system. We then rely on the parents printing the forms off and returning them. Things like trip permission slips etc.. I have been tasked with finding a solution. As in, parent clicks the link in an email (or direct via website) and fills the form in 'online' and submits it. That then goes to the relevent person (school secretary or whoever). Are other schools employing this? If so, how are you doing it? Words docs as templates? Third party solution? If you are, are the forms easy enough for the secretary etc. to create and implement (ie. I don't want to be doing it) Thanks in advance Ben

Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Great job sted. Just rolled it out to the first ICT suit with no problem. Only hardware letting me down, so can only get activex to work - not openGL. Thanks again, much appreciated! It's now set for the other ICT suits overnight -

Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
Ben_Stanton replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Wow, thanks FN-GM. I don't have to bugger about with mst or anything? Literally roll it out? Thanks a bunch I'll go try it now! -
Hi guys, I have put this off and off and off but now need to get Google Earth rolled out via GPO. I know this has been a hassle in the past and I have searched and tried the recommended method but it is all different now. The last posts I can find are back in 2009. Google Earth has obviously changed since then - I cannot download the full setup .exe to start with. How are people doing it with v6 or even v5? Any help MUCHLY APPRECIATED!

Thanks powdarrmonkey. I realise why it won't let me. But, the requests are not verified and actioned instantly. So, I assumed there would be a process to request a new certificate (with new details) whilst still using the existing cert until the request comes back from the CA. Can you point me in the right direction or explain how I would request it by another means? Thanks
-
Hi guys, I currently have an SSL cert installed on the exchange 2007 server. It is for mail.ourschool.herts.sch.uk and runs out in February. Since installing that 2 years ago, we have moved to a new web domain. I'd like to pull the ssl cert in line with it, as in, mail.ournewsite.co.uk. When I go into the cert request section of the 'default website' (where the SSL cert currently resides for OWA), it only gives me the option of remove, renew, replace, export and copy. None of which give me the ability to input the new domain data. What exactly am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's just me being stupid. Do I need to create a new website? Surely not Shirley! Ta very much Ben

[for sale] x6 1GB PC3 8500S SODIMM Memory for laptop or Mac

How about £10 each. Bargain -
Thanks GrumbleDook - that is exactly what I was after. Thank you, very informative. I'll speak with SLT and let you know the outcome. Thanks guys

I thought about this. I have actually disabled this function, although I did previously have it up and running but via imap. My idea, if he was to be granted this right would be to add him as an OWA user (restricted, no email ability etc.) and then grant him mailbox rights to his daughters mailbox (exchange 2007). He'd then simply log in via his credentials and then 'jump' to her mailbox in OWA. That way, nobody needs to ask or know her password. But, I don't like the fact that there is then the possibilty of him 'masquerading' as her...plus having access to the student address book etc. etc.. Hmmm. A tricky one but the general consensus seems to be no - unless he specifically asks his daughter. In that case, he can simply ask her to open it up at home and show him. This is maybe counter-productive as she could then, if she wanted, simply open up a hotmail account for privacy! Hmmmmm

Oh ok. Well the girls all sign an AUP stating we can and may check any of their school email mailboxes etc.. The emails are scanned for SPAM coming in and I have also set up a very crude 'profanity' filter that alerts a key member of staff when triggered (in or out). From what I gather and as an example, I think he wants to just check that she is not emailing boys/girls from another school or area that might lead her stray etc. Crazy I know.
-
Thanks for the replies. She is a Year 7. In what sense are your email filtered and monitored?
-
Hi guys, Got an email from one of the parents asking if he could have his daughters school pop3 and server settings etc.. When asked why, he just said that his daughter is at an impressionable age and wants to monitor what she is doing on there. I asked if he was going to let his daughter know, and he said no (as that would negate the whole point obviously). I personally don't feel too happy about it. I queried with SLT and they were also dubious, the CPO wasn't too happy either. What do you guys think? Morally and legally, where do we stand? Cheers guys - a real help Ben

This was pulled from a brand new and fully functional Apple Mac (I upgraded to x2 2Gb modules after getting them out of the box)! This memory will work in both PC and MACs. It is Samsung branded of the following make and model: M471B2873EH1-CF8 More info here; SAMSUNG's Digital World Although this memory is brand new, it will be coming in an open antistatic bag (reused from upgrades as described above). There is no warranty given or implied. I HAVE 6 OF THESE CURRENTLY ON EBAY BUT NO BIDS SO CAN RETRACT AUCTION £15 each or PM with reasonable job lot price.
