It sounds like you have seen more of Merlin than I have then! I'm due to have a meeting with a lady (who's name escape me at the minute) from SWGfL in the next couple of weeks to see if it can be used pre-rollout for a cluster primary project. I wouldn't necessarily worry about not being there for parts of the school day. Once it's up and running it would hopefully be stable and not need much hands on management. Any additional features you installed like additional email filtering etc, could be web-managed or delegated to another member of staff? Of course if you wanted to be there more, I'd say you are probably in a strong position to ask for it! It's logical for the school to need to invest in more technical time if they want to increase technical services like VLE and email.

Hi witch, Do you license under a schools agreement? If so, I would be seriously considering Exchange - you get the obvious basic email functionality, but also the other features which would aid leadership like shared calendars, public folders etc. If Exchange isn't a viable option due to cost then Live@EDU would be my second best option. I've tested it on a "spare" domain and it works like a dream. As a couple of other people have said, it's easy to intergrate in to Moodle. The only other thing which springs to mind as you are a fellow SWGfL-er is, have you had a look at Merlin yet? It might be that it offers some of the features you are looking for while being free to the school (I would assume Dorset are financing centrally in a similar way to Cornwall... although could be wrong!)

I'm wondering if we're interperating the question wrongly... If you want to purchase old machines and by "previous licenses" you mean the OEM licenses that they should have arrived to you with, then the answer is yes - just get an OEM copy of XP and do a clean install using the OEM key on the sticker on the side / back of the computer. In that scenario there is no tranfer of licenses as the OEM license applies to the individual hardware, not the person using it.

I had this a while back when I was trying to embed videos in to a custom made web portal (my theoretical way of providing access to videos while still having YouTube filtered). I spent quite a whack of time on the phone with SWGfL support and didn't get anywhere - it seems more modular filtering is required for this to happen which means moving to SmartCache or implementing something like Smoothwall (which lots talk of here!)

No, a new iPhone purchased in the UK will currently only be supplied on O2 as they signed the exclusive contract. They are easy to unlock and jailbreak though, although this is potentially illegal and will invalidate warranties etc. I've heard that Orange will be selling iPhones as well as O2 soon, but not sure if it's definately true or not.

I have an NC10 (which I upgraded to 2GB RAM after a couple of days of having it!), and haven't found a bad thing to say about it. The battery life is fantastic. It's the only netbook I've seen / used that just "feels" right, while offering a decent amount of performance too. Runs Windows 7 Professional perfectly. I think the N310 is pretty much an NC10 with a coloured lid isn't it?

What are the DOB cells formatted as? I think I had something similar before and had to format the cells as text instead of number?

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but there used to be a portal where the staff logged on to request a media kit (about £15). I'm not sure where you stand about installing yourself on equipment using VLKs though. Your Microsoft Volume Licensing reseller should be able to help, or spend a bit of time poking around on licensing.microsoft.com - that's where I found it a couple of years ago I think!

How's this for strange... It definately wasn't a firewall issue as it's off at the moment. I browsed and did "Run as Administrator" and the application came up fine. Accepted the policy and logged off to see if it ran on startup - and it did! I'll set another couple of stations up to see if I can recreate the error / cure!

I heard the NC10's were going EOL in September, so thought this might be the new one! Do these allow 2GB RAM like the NC10?

Hi All, Do any of you uber knowledgeable people know of a piece of software (ideally free but doesn't matter that much if it isn't) that would allow me to design and print a questionnaire which could later be read via OMR? I have a DRS CD230 sat in our admin office collecting dust (we do electronic registration now) which I would like to put to good use by collating questionnaire results from a staff / parent / pupil IT&C survey. The only one I've come across so far is SpeedQuest which I'm awaiting details on. Any other recommendations?

I suppose it depends on the enviroment really. As little-miss said she has folder re-direction I don't think that an additional 30kb being pulled off the server is much to worry about. If it was a roaming profile kind of enviroment then it would probably matter more. Either way Little-Miss, Mine or Michael's scenario should work for you!

I'm not really an Icon Guru (if such a title exists!), but no. Windows default icons are normally in DLL files or exe files. If you have your own .ico file it can be added to the shortcut to a file or program regardless of where it is saved. For an icon to showup on a network for a particular user, that user would need to be able to access the location of the icon. You could copy the icon to the C: of every single workstation if you really wanted, but a network share is far easier and quicker. It also means if you change the icon slightly in the future you only have to change the one source file - the share will be the same and reflect the icon change

Without knowing your network, I'd hazard a guess that you have a mapped P: which users have read access to? If so, just make a new folder in there and call it "Icons" then put your icons in there.
