Hi all, I thought I would give this a bump as I noticed it while I was creating a new thread for it! I've just come accross this product and would be very interested in hearing some experiences if anyone else has used it. Sadly I have to mostly agree with the posters saying don't do it! You will get a rep for it, and people will come to you constantly expecting a top service at a min (or free) price. It's not on. I'm looking at implementing a "home service" as an extention of our school-based roles. If it is documented in a school policy that staff or students can make limited use of in-house technical capabilities out of hours for a fixed price, then I don't see anything wrong - everyone is a winner - the staff know what to expect to pay, the technical staff know they will get overtime (offset against the cost paid by the staff member), and the school know staff will always have reliable access and service.

I'm not sure that is correct. My understanding was that a person buying copyright music can make one backup copy of it for their own backup purposes. Ripping to what is essentially a public network (and more than likely to a shared area which would potentially encourage sharing) is taking that a step further. If fair dealing is applied in the situation then in the event of a claim who would be liable? The teacher for requiring it / allowing it? The Network Administrators for facilitating it? The school itself?

I'd be interested to find a definitive answer on this. We have something similar where students have brought in music and wanted (via a music teacher) to store them on an area of the network. Our current stance is that they are not permitted to do so for a similar reason to the OP, but... The music staff are of the opinion that lots of "other" schools allow this and they believe there is some form of license exemption which allows the use of copyright music in an educational context. The only reference to such that I have found is "fair use" or "fair dealing" which is included in UK and US copyright law which alows limited use for specific educational use - however, the exemption requires specific educational purposes to be defined and for the teacher in charge to essentially be accountable. In other words, I'm not sure it's really something we should be relying on or expecting one member of staff to be legally accountable for! Does anyone else have a definitive legal answer / source of info?

Although I'm quite new to this world myself, as nobody has mentioned it so far I'll jump in with a comment on Hyper-V. There are some mentions above of the paid for extras associated with the other virtualisation flavours. If you are on a Microsoft Schools Agreement then Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 Datacentre is a viable option. The functions that would give you mirror and sometimes surpass the feature sets available in the paid for extras of other VM flavours. (E.G. Live migration from one VM server to another)

We have a very wordy (as in paragraphs of text) poster next to ours. What I'm thinking of in our area is a big colourful poster, with very brief snappy text along the lines of "don't be an idiot and expect me to do illegal copies of your stuff" (but in much more appropriate language - and an educational slant for pupils who see it!) Google didn't throw up too many useful links, so I may end up having to design something in-house, but thought I'd ask the nice guys and gals here first! Cheers

Hi All, A slightly different question here from me... Does anyknow know know of any good (and ideally free - pdf?) posters which I could print in A3 to explain the whole concept of Copyright to our pupils / staff / visitors?! Any specific ones (e.g. music copyright, film copyright etc) would be fine, as would general info posters on copyright itself. Cheers

Are you confident with your current wireless set up? Do you know for sure that neigbouring access points are not interfering with eachother (i.e. APs must be configured using channels 1, 6 and 11 - allowing those channels to overlap eachother, but no others etc?)

The technologies aren't too far apart. I'd say use what you know works if your deadline is fast approaching. If you have a bit of extra time Hyper-V would be the preferred option. Make sure that BIOS is set up correctly to use it and then install the role - i've done it on a few servers now and i've not come accross a problem. At a rough guess I'd say check bios and then check nic drivers?

They operate in a similar way to mobile phone networks, and base their service terms on the fact that they subsidise the original cost of hardware based on the full term of your contract. I believe, technically, it is illegal for anyone not to offer a final cancellation fee - but, that fee might be exactly the same as the total number of remaining payments left on your account! Your best bet might be to drop to the lowest package (£15 is?) and just let it run?

At the moment I'm not sure there is a plan as such as Merlin is still on a limited roll out. Your first port of call would probably be your LA, or SWGfL direct to find out if it is possible for you to be set up on the system. Once you have had the admin training you will be free to start provisioning users and start making use of the system. If you've had a sizable chunk of time to read my essay type reply earlier in the thread you might want to consider (and discuss with the person setting this review) whether it is appropriate to look at deploying Merlin at all. I see that you already make good use of Moodle and have a decent school website - the important thing to realise is that you will find 90% of Merlin functions replicate what you already successfully use, with minimal useful additional functions to that of Moodle or your schools website.

I'm not sure on the RM side of things, but do you know what AD functionality and FSMO roles are held by the server? Are they exclusively held or all replicated elsewhere? If there are no unique roles I'd be tempted to shutdown the server at a planned time and test the normal server / AD stuff - replication etc.

Right click the installer and choose properties. Then click on the compatability tab and choose from the pull down list. I had something very similar with the RC of win7 but didn't have any issues at all with the RTM and volume license versions.

I forgot I posted here - only found this when searching for Exchange 2010 lol. Does anyone know the office release date? (Or at least the date it will be available to volume licensing customers?) I'm pretty much at a crossroads production-wise. Existing Exchange 2003 server is aging fast, and now have the option to install on new hardware or even virtualise - but don't really want to use new hardware for 2003 enviroment, and would prefer not to move to 2007 only for 2010 to come out a few months down the line!
